Notch Calls Origin "a Good Thing"

I decided to suck it up and get Mass Effect 3. Unfortunately my email is tied to a three year old EA account that switched to Origin. I've now waited about an hour for an automated password retrieval email that doesn't seem to be coming.. Sigh.

I'm sure I went through plenty of bullshit because of Steam, but at least that's in the past.

Look at your spam folder it could be in there.

... Yeah... he hasn't read the EULA which lets them monitor EVERY aspect of EVERYTHING that you HAVE done, ARE doing and WILL EVER do on ANY computer that you have has he?

Have you read Steam's that lets them do the same?

And don't forget google! And just about every other place that wants to use people as market research.

They monitor LIMITED aspects of NON-IDENTIFYING data! Origin can monitor EVERY aspect including IDENTIFYING data which is a much more severe privacy risk

No they do not they only collect non identifying data Like your running processes and your hardware.

i hate origin because if i want to have ea titles on my pc i need to have them on a secondary piece of software that i dont like using, its actually stopping me from buying their games> Because i judge if its worth the hastle.

Honestly, if double clicking a different icon on your desktop to play a different selection of games bothers you enough to not buy those games, you probably weren't that interested in the games to begin with.

I'm assuming that's all there is to it. I am primarily a console gamer so I really don't know the extent to how bad Origin's interface is. People are making it sound like they have to go through physical pain every time they boot it up.

most people (including myself) wont have it on autoboot because its a memory hog, so in order to get to a game we want to play we have to go through a terribly slow booting process and then the process to boot the game itself.

Its just it detracts from the previous convenience of pc gaming, i play a game by clicking on it in my steam list. But between ubidrm and origin its less and less becoming the case. And call me lazy if you want but convenience is definitely a factor when it comes to using a product.

I mean if you need a real world example of origins bad netcode just last week i redownloaded bf3, the beef of it(99%) i downloaded in about 3 hours, so pretty quick, then the last 1mb kept bugging out and restarting itself, it took 3 hours to finish installing despite only being 1mb off completion. (this wasnt a connection error its just some weird authentication shit). Thats frankly unnacceptable.

I can see why that could be annoying. I'd be pretty pissed if something downloading to my 360 bugged on the last percent... Also, I wasn't aware of the long boot time. That does seem like a minor issue to me though but I guess if you are used to a simple routine for playing your games that would be annoying.

The title should say, "Notch Says Steam having Competition a Good Thing" The current title makes it sound like Notch is saying, "I love Origin."

The automated password retrieval email thing on the origin program doesn't seem to work for me, but the one on their website worked fine! My Sheps can continue their quest!

I kind of see the point Notch is trying to make. Theoretically, Origin is a good thing, I just wish the games I like and look forward to don't get released on it exclusively (talk about competition, eh?)
So I'm fine with Notch liking Origin as long as he keeps Minecraft away from it.

I wouldn't call Origin compatition, I'd call it EA forcing it down your throat if you want there games on PC.

One brand controlling the market is always a bad thing - because it stifles competition and crates a monopoly. I don't mind Origin all that much. But the problem is that it it itself is anti-competition. rather than actually try and make a better service than Steam, EA forces users to install Origin to play and makes as many games as it can Origin exclusive. Monopoly is a slap in the face to the consumer, but in many ways so is Origin.

I fail to see what harm it does, except that it's silly of EA to deny their games to Steam, they're only hurting themselves.
On a somewhat related note, are Valve games available on Origin? (Genuinely curious, not sarcasm)

Tried origin once... I'm pretty sure a somebody with cancer died that day as well. Family didn't react well. Started flipping shit. It's was awful.

Oh and the guy's family didn't take the news well either. They cried and went to the funeral. Sad stuff happening.

Steam has good products and services already so not sure what this will do apart from give your steam account a smaller range of games and require you to install that origin malware crap

Valve comes from a developer background, their foray into selling other peoples video games was unexplored territory.

EA however, has been practising and learning how to make money through sometimes neferious means for a long time now, this shows as their first step into the same market as Steam sees them force the program onto people and remove said games from the competing service.

I can buy Colgate toothpaste from competing supermarkets, but i can't get crysis 2 on steam...

You are aware that EA does still have some of thier newer games on Steam and would put their bigger games back on Steam is Steam changed its shitty DLC policy.

Arguably Steam needs NO competition, due to the fact that they already offer 50% and sometimes 75% sales on virtually EVERYTHING (I've even seen $30.00 games as low as like $5.00) at least once or twice a year (minimum). Something I can't see Origin or other services doing. Steam has already realized that making your customers happy and putting games on sale is what sells and makes a profit (Killing floor dropped from $20 to $3 for like 3-4 days, and the game sales/activity BOOMED with literally like a 1000+ people playing 24/7 for over a week straight).

So when I want some good deals on Triple-A games I'll stick with Steam, if I want some cool and inventive Indie games then I'll go to Desura, but if I wanna have a company pull down it's pants and squeeze out a massive pile of S**T onto my face while I shove money in their pockets then I guess Origin would be my best choice.

I know you like to create drama, but you REALLY should have run the story on the fact that Origin changed its EULA so that it couldn't check out everything you do on your computer, it would really clear up a lot of bullshit floating around here.

he actually has exactly the right idea. i wouldnt have as much of a problem with origin if i could still buy my ea games (mass effect 3 lookin at you) on steam. i still wouldnt use origin unless they did something amazing, but i wouldnt want it and all ea executives to die in a fire.

Competition Does make for a better market. Origin is NOT a competition. it would be competition if: players would have a choice on which platform to buy the product. real situation - we are forced into origin. its not a competition, its slavery.
Both steam and origin needs vast improvements. thing is, steam been improving for the last 8 years, will origins?
