I just realised that these are not torrent sites.

Who are these people that do no use torrents in this day and age?
Simply baffeling...

*sigh* This is what happens when you start messing with the internet, and cracking down on freedom of speech and information. There's even at least one relatively large site out there that is blocking American IPs now, out of fear. I really hope things don't get any worse, the USA could screw up the greatest invention of the 20th century for everyone, and all out of some misguided sense of greed.

Ok, it's time for the UK to step in and take over the US. Please? Hell, I'll leave the door unlocked for ya. Now all my anime and porn is getting cut off :(
we tried that before. then you called our monarch a shitlord[sup][citation needed][/sup] and shot us in the faces. personally, i think America was just a British plot to get rid of all the annoying-ass Puritans who were cramping our styles that got out of hand.
This is the best summary of the colonisation of America/the American Revolutionary War ever. I'm not even kidding.
Nah, you missed the part where the Americans were pissed because they needed to pay some taxes to help the British recoup the costs of defending their butts in the French and Indian war, and they got mad at the prospect of having to pay people for services rendered. Seriously, I'm an American and even I know that's what happened. You know what else? It's not just our revolution that was based on not wanting to pay people. You see, we were the China of the 18th century when it came to copyright. We didn't have our own copyright or patent office, and we didn't recognize those of other countries. Hell, that's why the industrial revolution came to America: someone stole the plans to a patented machine from England and brought it to America, where he couldn't get in trouble for it, but could make a crapton of money. And now /we're/ the most anal IP enforcers on the planet. Makes sense.

So I was wondering since the concern is over copy written material, which most people use once like to watch a movie. Will this make it also illegal to borrow a movie to watch, because isn't this sort of the same thing?

This is fucking ridiculous.

Both what happened to the sites AND the people here who aren't mad about it.

Even if you are against all downloading, legal or otherwise, get mad about the principle. You realize they could do the EXACT same thing to Youtube and every other video or media site on the net for the same reasons.

This also seems relevant:

Possible Godwin's Law or melodramatic violation, but the point still stands; Stop this shit NOW before they get to the stuff YOU care about.

EDIT: Apologies. I misunderstood the article. Somehow I read that these other sites where taken down by governments as well, instead of just closing themselves.

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN YOU FBI!

Why, though, is the Pirate Bay still legal? Why is that a thing?
They're just linking to content that links to illegal content, not actually hosting it.
a guy in the UK is about to get sent to the states for "just linking to illegal contetn"; so explain that.

Which is easy: UK government are push overs thats why!

The whole idea of IP is ridiculous. Besides, if people really like a show/movie, they'll buy the dvd, merch, and other stuff.

This action will eventually cause the internet to shut down. Think about it no site will be protected because almost all sites are connected in one way or the other. My site leads to his site, his site leads to her site, her site leads to their site, their site leads to another site, another site leads to that site and so on. Some where along this line will be (a so called) bad site, so since all sites are connected in some way then they will either have to be shut down or have no links at all. That would be pretty boring.

Sites that hold copyrighted material get taken down. Why is this a big deal? You want the content, pay for it.
OK what if said sites were used for sending out somebodies OWN products and or used to back up files. So what then, what if they didn't want to charge people for their product.
Note in the OP's topic that he said in the first file uploading site that you could only download files you upload personally. That seems fine to me there and their are dedicated sites for backups (also DVD's or Raid 1 for hard copy backups)

As far as distributing your own works, well that does get a bit trickier. I would suppose that if the demand is big enough a dedicated site will emerge that does just that. Hosts people's original works for distribution. That's how the free market works, if they can make money off it mind you.

Also I'm sure if they were looking for distribution money wise they could easily get on iTunes or Amazon. (shit I've had two different series of podcast on iTunes before)
THERE WERE DEDICATED SITES TO PASS OUT FREE PRODUCTS, AND THOSE SITES WERE JUST SHUT DOWN.

I hope that's clear enough, you know what those sites did when they found copyrighted material before this happened? They removed them. You're blaming sites for something that they were already against.

Who is "They"? Nobody came for anyone except MegaUpload. Then the only after a two year investigation did MegaUpload get shut down. On top of that a good bit of the things they went after MegaUpload for were not even copyright/piracy related.

Every other site has taken their content down all on their own. There has been fuck all done to these sites. They've chosen to restrict access or stop allowing downloading or take content off their site. These sites are simply scared of being next and are grossly over reacting to the situation.

I don't want to see the US going and fucking over the internet as much as the next guy and when the time comes they start to shut sites down at the drop of a hat I will be the first in line to condemn them for it. However, this is not that time. They've only shut down one site and that was after two years worth of compiling evidence and going through the proper channels and only because it had a cubic shit ton of shady shit going on.

Right now you should be mad at the individual sites for being absolutely spineless in the face of one bad site getting shut down.

First off, these other sites aren't being "shut down" they are just reacting like a bunch of scared sheep. As best I can tell the US has only shut down ONE site recently, MegaUpload. Even then that was after a TWO YEAR nvestigation and a good bit of what they busted MegaUpload for wasn't even about piracy. They were doing all sorts of shady things over there.
So they went Al Capone on Megauploads ass?

The title of this thread made me believe it was about incorrect English. Honestly learn some propper grammar. My English is far (very) far from perfect, but I at least give it a serious attempt:

Now it's Filesonic, the witch hunt has officially begun.
Though really that comma shouldn't be there. Maybe a semi-colon, but I'm rarely 100% sure of their use. A better sentence would be "Now it's Filesonic, and so the witch hunt has officially begun." Commas are commonly misplaced to denote a pause, but they should't be used in this situation without an "and", "but", "therefore", etc.
Or add "with" before FileSonic, and add another comma after "Now". Also, putting "officially" between "has" and "begun" creates a variation of a split infinitive, another grammatical pothole. I think the best way to rewrite the thread title would be:

"Now, with FileSonic being taken down, the witch hunt has begun."

Grammar-Nazi mouth-breathing aside, this is starting to get out of hand. I can understand trying to curb piracy, but there's a ton of collateral damage already bleeding from the seams. Eventually the very businesses these blowhards are trying to help are going to suffer damage beyond repair.

And when the FBI realizes this too late and makes an awkwardly-delivered statement akin to "Uh... our bad. Heh... ^__^' ," the entire collective of the US population will shake their heads in exasperation, muttering an equally disgruntled "What a bunch of fucking idiots...". And it will be simultaneously glorious, hilarious, and ridiculous.

This is more like, "They came for the copyright infringers, but I did not speak up because I was not a copyright infringer. Then they came for more copyright infringers, and I still didn't speak up because I still wasn't one. And so on and so forth".

The second they take down a site that conducts itself legitimately I will speak up. But I don't vouch for the guilty, lest my words mean nothing when I do the same for the innocent.

Ive got a feeling anonymous wont stay quite about this one....
weird when I started the same post whit a different less appealing title I didnt got any comments...
Videobb is still up...

I'm getting bored of this. It was easy when it was just the one or two sites you could visit, now the feebies have decided to throw a hissy fit and suddenly it's so much harder to find sites with uploads on them.

(Just in case)

Since people on this site seem to have a hard time understanding my message when I'm being sarcastic, here's what I meant:

Taking down megavideo/videobb/sidereel/youtube will not stop eople from finding ways to upload and watch files online. For every single site taken down a new one will be created almost immediately, probably more. Until either the internet is censored to the degree that the Chinese censor it (officially placing the US into dictatorship levels) or they agree to live and let live, people will always find a way to watch what they want to watch.

Someone somewhere needs to start being mature about this. However, since on the one side you have the internet (which is never going to mature ever) and on the other side you have the American government, which although it's made of mature citizens (thus definitely representative of the majority of the American populace) is never actually mature, I think that the back and forthing is more likely.

Yeah, this whole thing is just one big playground shoving contest, and the winner will be determined by who has the bigger hands.

I don't know about others but I mostly download TV shows. As far as I am aware there is no legal way for me to be able to watch the next episode of, say, Fringe other than a) moving to US b) waiting a year or more while hoping that one of the local channels decides to buy the show and dub it.
Basically this. There are shows I watch over the Internet because they aren´t available here.
