Now You See Me 2 is more of the same, but maybe a little bit better.

Not even remotely surprised here. The original was one of the dumbest films I've ever seen: The Horsemen were fun, but most of the film follows Ruffalo's boring FBI character, and since Ruffalo was also the mastermind behind the whole thing, essentially none of the film actually mattered or featured real stakes.

"You probably won't feel like you wasted two hours of your life." Now that's the sort of endorsement that gets a box blurb.

Now You See Me 2 is in my top 3 favorite movies this year. This is an entertaining series of heist movies. It helps that they tweak the formula by making the crew magicians. The cast is great. I love Woody Harrelson evil twin. Daniel Ratcliff is brilliant. He is proving with each role that he will have a long career beyond Harry Potter. Lizzy Caplan is a great upgrade from Isla Fisher.

The movie features one great set piece after another. The plot has a lot of credible twists that you don't see coming. I actually like the idea of an Anonymous-like group of magicians do-gooders committing crime in the name of public service. So, everything about this movie is perfect. It just a shame Now You See Me doesn't get embraced as heartily as the nostalgic, cash-grab movie series do. It just prove the people are too lazy or unwilling to embrace original IP's. That is why we get these warmed-over reboots and sequels. I'll stop before I start lamenting that no one saw The Lobster.

As someone who does top/bottom 10 lists of movies I see in cinemas, curious as to what the other two are.

I have to be honest, the review sounds like it walked it with bad expectations then just reinforced them. Honestly, Now you See Me was on of the most interesting movie concepts I have seen. I really enjoyed that movie. It had the same effect that magic is supposed to have. I spent the entire movie wondering if they somehow gained magic powers, which is what you are supposed to wonder with magic. You know it's fake, but with a good magician you can't find the hole, you can't see how it's done. That movie elicited the same feelings. If I had to guess, the reviewer is probably a cynical jerk who hates a good magic show (I kid, I kid).

Don't get me wrong, I haven't seen it. But since this is reviewed as being "slightly better" than the first, then I'm pretty sure I will probably enjoy it. But, to be fair: Opinions, what bitches they can be.

I didn't like the first movie. The primary conceit is that they're magicians who are so good at slight of hand, etc. that they can use those techniques to perform amazing feats of thievery. The problem of course is that they most definitely are NOT that good. It bugged me that a movie that was about the marvels of stage magic relied heavily upon CGI for a number of scenes. I would have much preferred they get some ACTUAL magicians to design some ACTUAL illusions that, while not as visually impressive, sell the central gimmick of the series by being real.

I'll do a quick top 5. I was thinking about the order of my favorite movies this year after I posted it.

1. Zootopia
2. Captain America: Civil War
3. Now You See Me 2
4. 10 Cloverfield Lane
5. Deadpool

Honorable Mentions: The Boss and The Lobster. The first for the Melissa McCarthy wackiness. The other for the absurdist look at how society's attitude about love & relationships and the lack thereof.

Okay... As a fan of the first movie (aka "HOW'D THEY DO THAT?!"), I can see myself liking this one... with friends...

Other than that, how'd he stop the rain? HOW?!
