The good news is it'll never be finished, because Obsidian is making it.
The bad news is that that last sentence was a joke.
Well, I might check it out anyway, after the reviews for it come up. I can't really see South Park's brand of humor translating that well to an RPG.

There is no possible way this will work out. It just does not fit together.
It's gonna be a shitty cash-grab. And we all know it.
Actually maybe not, Matt and Trey are on board, as long as they know how a good game should look then this could turn out good, I don't think they'd let a completely crappy game come out, not with at least trying really hard to prevent it. Either way, I am excited and will support this project.

On the one hand, it's Obsidian, so it should be a buggy piece of garbage. On the other hand, it's a South Park RPG. So... if it were being made by almost anybody else, I'd definately have bought it.
Haha i just quoted you to change your "great" to "extremely buggy" but it appeared in the reply box as such...ninja'd by the escapist site haha.

Is it just me or has obsidian entertainment actually never come up with an idea of their own?

Knights of the Old Republic 2
Neverwinter Nights 2
Fallout: New Vegas (That's the 5th game, by the way)
and now south park?
You forgot Alpha Protocol.

Also, Obsidian was founded by former members of Black Isle, Interplay and Troika.

All of which were responsible for games such as Fallout and Arcanum. Due to financial issues these games either didn't get sequels (Arcanum) or were sold to different developers (Fallout) and since then due to the way the gaming industry is going it is very hard for developers to pitch new ideas.

Well, the graphics requirements will be low, the voice acting will be easy enough to do, and the story is open. Overall this is a far more realistic thing to get right than "Save the entire galaxy, fuck a couple of chicks and be a customizable HD asshat"

The new game is expected to come out sometime in 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The Game Informer link says its also for the PC. If I hadn't clicked on that link, I would've ignored further developments of this game. Just sayin'.

Anyway, would people shut the fuck up about Obsidian? Fallout 3 was even buggier than NV, and everyone remembers it with fond memories. And funny how everyone gives a free pass to Skyrim, whose patches actually borks the game even more.

Obsidian is one of the best developers out there right now. Too bad I don't see why they're being hired here, since the writing is being done by Trey and Matt.

If this game sounds like a bad idea to you, it's high time you wandered down to your doctor's and got yourself declared legally insane.
Beyond stoked for this already.

I blame the rest of you for ignoring Alpha Protocol and forcing obsidian to take up any highly paid jobs sent its way to survive :(

Damn' it... Obsidian for all their faults are capable of some of the best RPGs in the industry, their storytelling and choice of freedom within their story puts Bioware games to shame and this is how they will channel their creative energies?

Well, good thing I like south park I guess. This is not a crossover I wanted to see, but then again, were it up to me, Obsidian would be a far more successful dev then it currently is. 'Guess this the way the cookie crumbles.
AP was great, its kinda funny/sad AP got blamed for some things that Bioware got away with in ME1 and people loved. *sigh* I hope they make AP2 some day.[/quote]

I heartily agree, good sirs.Alpha Protocol, to me, was and is an amazing game, unfairly judged by people who wanted things like pinpoint accuracy from the get-go. It's almost like people forgot it was an RPG, with their complaints about the stealth mechanics (Despite their low stealth scores) and taking too long to aim their shotgun (which hey never picked up except for that one mission). I'm mildly disappointed by the SMGs-are-fired-Akimbo-Only attitude, but otherwise was quite ecstatic for the possibility of a sequel, now sadly, my hopes have been sunk because people can't recognize a good game on the market when they seen one and the IP drowned.

This - I only realised because I was so surprised that Obsidian would fail to release a game on PC so I looked up the THQ game site/press release for myself.

As far as Obsidian goes - I think it still makes perfect sense, I mean I can't imagine Trey and Matt are intending to write this in a vacuum, and it's not like they've written a big budget RPG before; so working with a studio who'll have people on staff who can say what's viable and generally teach them tricks of the trade seems smart. I imagine this will be a similar arrangement to Penny Arcade & Hothead a few years back, where the creators write the story, the core dialogue and oversee everything to make sure the art direction and tone is consistent, but staff writers from the studio get all the grunt work of filling out the conversation trees and so forth.

And yeah they've got a reputation for bugs, but I've got some serious enjoyment out of every game they've released aside from Alpha Protocol (and even that I could appreciate the ambition, I just hated the half-baked gameplay).

Well, yeah, of course you're right, I'm an idiot for not thinking about that. It's very likely writing for a series is a pretty far cry from writing an epic RPG, considering all the branching of dialogues, actions, etc.

As for the my uncalled rant on people's perception of Obsidian... I'm just scared, you know? They've former employees from Black Isle and Interplay, but more important for me is that there are guys from Troika. I loved the kind of ambition Troika had for Vampires: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. And why were they shut down? The same reason as people's (justified) rage against Obsidian - over ambitious projects that led to buggy games...

I don't want them gone too, you know. :(

I forgot about Black Isle and Interplay, sorry. and I suppose you're right about the creativity-dampening crisis we're in

Remember that the Disney/Square Enix collaboration was seen as screwy and look what it gave us - and oft-beloved, sometimes-hated action RPG series that now has more pointless spinoffs than actual interesting entries.

Seriously, did we really need anything other than Birth By Sleep and Chain of Memories? NONE of the others seem to have any real value to the story whatsoever, and where the hell is 3?

Anyway, Obsidian's strength is writing and someone else is doing that. So why did they team up with Obsidian again? Why not Bioware, they also had a strange collaboration with Sonic Team that turned out something not so bad if I remember right? I just think Obsidian is the furthest from "logical" choice, unless it's the only one they could find.
Bioware is with EA, enough said
