No, I mean, Arthur, the kids show.

I thought Arthur already did that? Having a gay couple. They technically already did that two new original characters. I know it was around the early 2000s when it happened. I stopped watching at that point, but I do know a big deal was made at the time.

Yea, the Blink And You Miss It lesbian couple in one episode. The gay wedding episode got the usual Gamergator anti-SJW "anti censorship" crowd to scream bloody murder. Shoe at least came to her senses somewhat and finally realized that the crowd was becoming what it hated, even though she was a big part of making that movement in the first place.

I'm not gonna watch the video btw, but I assume she became another asshole on the Internet? Is that the gist?

More or less, yea. I mean, points for breaking the spell honey, but the damage is already done.

After having slept on it, I have to say that I am genuinely obsessed with this show.
Like, this is exactly the show you get when your major plot writers are 8 year olds bashing action figures together, and then Kevin Smith wrote it. And I mean this in the best way possible. I am absolutely perplexed as to how they got this on air. Good or bad, it is the platonic ideal of playing with dolls

I watched this out of curiosity due to all of the controversy. It was entertaining enough. I can see why people are angry, but I can also see the logic in the writing. If you do want to take He-Man out of the narrative, Teela is the obvious choice for protagonist as the most developed supporting character. Who else is there, Ram-Man? Fisto?

So outside of what other people on the internet are thinking or saying about the show, what were the thoughts of the people here about its plot points and such?

There's only 5 episodes, so the plot isn't particularly deep, but it's good enough, a typical quest to save Eternia and the universe from destruction.

I really like the animation, and the updated character designs are pretty good, particularly the villains.

There's some interesting character development work along with good vocal performances, in particular Urko and Evil Lynn. Skeletor does sound a lot like the Joker though.

The biggest flaw is Teela. As I said in the other post, I can see why she was the protagonist, but she is really unlikeable in this series. I just wished one of the other characters had told her to get over herself.

So far I've watched the first 2 episodes, they were pretty entertaining. I did find episode 2 kind of odd in one aspect. Namely

Spoiler

When Teela is openly declaring her dislike of magic, and praising the benefits of technology....they don't point out the parallels to her viewpoint, with the literal technological religious cult that was introduced as her obstacle for that episode. I mean she was literally saying the SAME STUFF priest Rollins was saying. But no mention of how this might impact her was brought up at all. It didn't make her question her bigoted stance against magic, it didn't have her say anything like "Yeah, you know you have a FEW good points, I'll admit. But you are taking it too far!" Nope, none of that. She just says "You sound nuts!" and then leaves it at that. I just, it felt like a miss opportunity to explore her philosophical stance, and make her have to reflect on extremes.

Otherwise, I'm enjoying it so far. I'll probably knock out another episode today during lunch.

The biggest flaw is Teela. As I said in the other post, I can see why she was the protagonist, but she is really unlikeable in this series. I just wished one of the other characters had told her to get over herself.
Yeah I felt her angry turn in the opening episode was fairly over the top, and unwarranted, based on what we had been shown up to that point. I get that they needed for her to be in conflict with the establishment, in order to rail against it. But, it felt more like a spoiled fit, than a valid criticism/problem on her part.

Pretty much what i was typing. Teela needed some more lines to explain why she's so bent up about it. Her shitty attitude isn't really justified. Maybe there should have been an extra episode at the beginning to set the stage for that feeling of betrayal, to show why shes so effected by it.

I do not like Skeletors voice. I know I sound pure evil for daring to not worship every word out of Mark Hamills mouth, but it literally just sounds like the joker, the intonation, the dialog, everything. Its really distracting.

I actually like that they kind of One Punch Man'd him for at least the first bit of the series. Haven't seen the last half so no clue when he is reintroduced. But the fact is he's The I Win Button. Once he shows up, there is basically no real tension left. So having him be out of the picture, but sort of there as a concept, like with OPM literally wandering around lost in the streets, unable to help because he just can't find the threat, makes for more dramatic tension IMO.

I forgot there was a He-Man character named Fisto. Takes on a whole new meaning in my immature adulthood... Curious if there's any cosplay porn with a "Fisto" in it. Not curious enough to search for it, but if one thing's true about porn, if you can imagine it, it's already been done.

Also reminds me how little writers had to try back in the age of my innocence: "He's a guy with big metal fist... let's call him 'Fisto.' Wow, Steve, save some of the genius for the rest of us."

They could've named him Mefisto at least.

That would be a direct reference to Mephistopheles, and/or Mephisto from Marvel comics (though he might not have been introduced yet), which is a devil/demon, which means evil, which means satan, which means 1980s pearl clutching parents infused with Satanic Panic, would refuse to let their kids have the toys, and thus hurt sales.

That's why you have him pronounce it as me-fisto so you can sneak it under the radar.

Eh, I mean the kids, and parents watching it, only hearing it, might not notice the joke. But actually written down on an action figure package, the bible thumpers would lose their shit. I mean yeah it's fucking stupid, but, as a kid from the 80s, I remember the completely insane shit they would lose their minds over, about my toys and/or music. They actually gave us a list of bands that were "in league with the devil" when I was in middle school, and it had bands and the songs/albums that were tainted, and a breakdown of why they were bad. It was insane. So, yeah, Mattell was wise to not try and make a satanic joke in the toy's name, from a business model I mean.

Why must you destroy my meme dreams with rationality and logic? Why must you hurt me?

Hey, I agree, the character saying "Me Fisto!" Like Grimlock from Transformers, or The Hulk, is incredibly funny. And adult me that is familiar with that mythological reference, would chuckle at it. And it's hardly like they didn't do that kind of thing with their naming conventions. Like how Netossa from She-Ra is because she...you know...tosses nets. So Net-Tossa, Netossa. But, given it's biblical reference, it's unlikely they would poke the hornet's nest of the moral right.

Okay so I was curious about this because I saw a big stink about Heman on Reddit. Never watched the show, always seemed gay in a professional wrestling oiled and shaved guys touching each other's bodies kinda way, have no stake in the canon or anything. Did not grow up with the show or toys.
But from what I can gather the big stink is that in a Q/A Kevin Smith, who I do really like and met once back stage at one of his standup shows here in town, said that the new show was very He-Man centric and he was a major character, and fans are accusing him of lying because He-man is actually killed in the first episode, only to be brought back to life and killed again in the last episode, and really its not about He-Man in the least, its like his sister's story or whatever. I mean sure? Who cares? Shouldn't the fans be happy they're getting more of their homoerotic cartoon show?
