Just bought okami for the ps2 second hand from eb games. It was an impulse buy and I'm not sure of its quality. What were your experiences with the game? Any specific problems or highlights? Looking forward to playing it

That game is the best, gameplay is great, art is great, music is great, intangibles are great, tons to do. There are some problems which are very apparent at the start, which is that cutscenes are very long, dialogue is slow and a little repetitive and unskippable, and that the start is slow and a little too restrictive. It takes a couple hours of playing to really get going, but once it does get going, it's fantastic. One of my all time favorites

It is an amazing game that is a lot of fun. Great design, fun characters and fun amazing gameplay. Things I find annoying with though is the way the characters talk. It is all gibbrish and after a while can get annoying. Also you fight the first boss over and over. Its annoying, espically the third time becaue the strategy doesn't change. Then each time its kind of made a big deal of. Like its going to be hard but it never really is once you know the strategy. Its sad because you have more powers later on and it would have been nice if they really let you go crazy with them and force you to change it up. Other than that its a great game. Kind of Legend of Zelda-e. Give it a shot and its really fun.

It is very surprising at how long the game actually is,if you enjoy the game I say you're getting more than your moneys worth. Especialy in a time where a full priced game will only last you 6 or 7 hours at max.

I love both the gorgeous art style and the unique gameplay (especially the combat is very fun). One of the 'must have' games on the PS2 as I see it.
That being said, though, there're several things I hated about it.

One being the length. It takes bloody forever to complete the game, even if you ignore the side quests and the like (40+ for me). I wouldn't have minded it that much if it wasn't for the prolonged story (not to spoil anything but there comes a point when you think that the game is over but then you just continue playing. For just as long as you needed to get to the point.), which also gets more or less totally bonkers after that.

And then there're the characters. Every single one is an incompetent, unlikable twat. Made me wonder how they all managed to survive so far if nobody can do anything on their own (I know, gameplay and all, but it threw me off every time nevertheless, especially how people expected to fish without a thread). And the (mostly pointless) dialogues go on for ages which was especially aggravating for me when some silly, totally unfitting slang was involved (and since it's employed by two main characters that was most of the time, unfortunately)

If the game ended after that certain point it would have been mostly perfect for me, though.

Stand aside guys.

I got this :D

The best way to describe Okami is that it's a Zelda game that pretty much did everyhting better.

The music, the aesthetic, the characters, the humour, everything is just better.

My one complaint, however, is that combat is pretty poor, more often than not it's just a button mashing fest, thanfully, the combat is a very small portion of the game.

The rest just oozes character.

It's magical.

50+ hours of joy in one of the most imaginative, surreal, enchanting gameworlds ever made.

I kinda liked the combat - sure it wasn't very deep or challenging but hey it was functional and looked pretty!

EDIT: Now the digging minigame, on the other hand... FUUUUUU-

Beautiful art, amazing soundtrack. I love the story. And it is a very long game. Perfect for those that are worried about getting bang for their buck.

Well, I've only played it on the Wii, so that may have tainted my view somewhat.

The celestial brush mechanics work great with the wiimote.

The combat though, not so much. Dodging was completely unreliable since the nunchuck was terrible at detecting motion, let alone which direction, and hitting stuff was basically just waving the wiimote until stuff was dead.

But, yeah it looked great :D

On PS2 the combat is quite precise - dodging, attacking, countering, everything works perfectly fine, just as the transition between painting and fighting (although painting itself is rather fiddly). I'd say it's easily my favourite part of the game.

Yeah, I thought it was a porting issue.

The combat was bearable, but it's definately something that works better with a controller.

games like this, games you can feel though play where a true labor of love for the devs, are rare, enjoy it, it's unlikely we'll see anything even close to it again anytime soon

Ah, I can imagine it would be kinda awkward on the Wii alright. It felt fine on the PS2 controller because the dodging was mapped to the shoulder buttons so it felt really intuitive.

[small]But goddamn that fucking digging mini game...[/small]

I bought the game day one on the premise of it's art style and brush gameplay alone. Yeah, I was kinda being a high brow prick, but then the game turned out to be really fucking good as well as funny. The characters are fucking hilarious and memorable, the Boss fights are fantastic, and the overall sense of adventure is thick and gooey.

The only complaint I have is that the platforming - what little of it there is - is a bit wonky, and the game ultimately overstays its welcome. Seriously, that final chapter strayed too far away from the setting and characters we've come to love, and the ending felt a bit silly...

Sci-fi? Really?

My friend brought it to my attention and also bought me the art book.

A really gorgeous game and my little niece and nephew love it too. My nephew says it's his fave game on the wii.

Granted, I only played it on the Wii, but it was a terrible game. The controls were flat-out broken. You can't do combat properly until a few hours into the game when you get a different weapon, because the starting weapon just doesn't work. But hey, that's okay! Once you get a weapon that works, combat is still awful. You always get warped to a tiny pocket dimension so that you have almost no room to maneuver. And combat is dull and repetitive as well. Just mash a button, oh boy. You can't even do different attacks like in Zelda. Just mash (or shake the WiiMote, as my case was). Frequently you have to break what little flow the combat has to try and use some celestial brush attacks. This sucks because one, stopping in the middle of a fight to paint things is completely uninteresting, and two, because the celestial brush doesn't work either. The further you get into the game, the more you'll start to notice that the vast majority of the symbols you learn to paint are based on circles. Want to regrow a tree, you draw a regular circle. Want a bomb, you draw a circle with a line coming out of it. Want some wind, you draw a small line, loop a circle in the middle of it, then make another line at the end. The problem then becomes that the game can't tell any of these circle based symbols apart. You wanted a bomb, you get wind. You wanted wind, you get regrow. Oh, and you have to wait for ink to regenerate too, so after the game screws up a few times, you get to run around trying not to get killed while it regens. Same problem in the overworld too. And the digging mini-game? Good luck beating that without some kind of external cheat device to give you infinite time. The time limit is very strict, demanding perfection from you. Which, of course, is impossible because the celestial brush mechanics are broken as described above. So the game gives you the wrong effect too many times, you have to stand around waiting for ink to regen, and now it's too late to finish the mini-game.

Story? Characters? Boring. Forgettable. Unlikeable. Nothing interesting here. The pacing of the story is awful. You fight the big bad boss you started the game afraid of after just a few hours and then the game has to make up really inane excuses to not end. And the characters, nothing to them. The only one that's memorable is Issun, and not because he's a good character, but because he's an awful character. He never knows when to shut up and let you start playing again. He just rambles on and on and on. He makes Navi and even Fi seem quiet. He makes the Golden Sun games seem like they have very little dialog. And not a single thing he says is interesting. Every other character in the game is completely forgettable. Not terrible, but not worth remembering either.

The only thing that Okami has going for it is that it looks very nice. Whoopee! Basically, it's comparable to all those artsy indie games that come out all the time these days. It looks nice but fails on every other front. If you want to experience the best Okami has to offer, just go look at some screenshots and playthrough videos on YouTube. That way, you can see how nice the game looks without having to suffer through it's broken gameplay, poorly paced story, and uninteresting characters.

Bottom line? My recommendation is that you take the game back for a refund before it's too late. And no, that's not an April Fool's joke. I'm dead serious. Forget about playing it and just get your money back. I'm telling you this now because I wish someone had told me this years ago instead of telling me lies about how great it is. My time and money were wasted on this awful game, but yours don't have to be.

Now just watch as all the artsy game lovers tell me I was playing it wrong. Too bad for them I've already heard every piece of advice under the sun to make the game work, tried it, and observed that it didn't help. And if the game had been well built in the first place, you wouldn't need a list of possible work-arounds to get through it in the first place.

I had to create an account of my own just because I also bought Okami recently and just finished it.

Long story short: Not great, but very good. The best Capcom game put out since Megaman X3 or so. I found the combat scaled very nicely, and while it was never exactly challenging (particularly not after you get the Veil of Mist power: at that point, you've won every fight ever), there was enough difficulty to keep it interesting, and I enjoyed experimenting to see what brush move would finish off the enemies in a way to net me some demon fang goodies.

I adore the art; there is some humor in it that you don't see much of in video games any more, and it helps that it's laugh-out-loud funny; the story is interesting; Amaterasu is the greatest character you ever see as a protagonist; every new power you get gives you an opportunity to go back through every level and explore it anew, which some people will probably think is a grind but that I personally like. I even like most of the sidegames, and think the three or four digging missions get a bad rap.

Most of my complaints are minor. I read much faster than the unskippable dialogue scrolls, so that got on my nerves, and it even exacerbated a complaint I have about the amount of dialogue, which, like my enjoyment of the repeated exploration, may be an idiosyncrasy with me: I kind of hate how many games want me to stop playing them so they can make me listen to their stories. Guys, if I wanted to watch a movie, I'd watch a bloody damn movie, okay?

Ahem. Sorry. Got a bit annoyed there.

As to its other flaws, the only three I can think of are a camera that seems to be the player's enemy--no, more than that, the player's nemesis. There's this treasure chest on a bridge's scaffolding very early in the game that took me a full hour to get because the camera's limited range and slow movement left me jumping blind and missing the ledges over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, so that was just a little frigging bit frustrating. There are also some racing minigames that I hate and will hate until the day I die, again mostly because of the camera; there's this one through an ice region where if you bump into anything it will freeze you solid for three seconds that had me screaming aloud with frustrated rage. Finally--and yes, fine, call me a Nazi, I don't care; the fact is people were paid to keep this stuff from happening, and they should have done a better job--the game script continually mixes up "its" and "it's."

Those gripes are really pretty minor, though. I had a lot of fun with an innovative world, a refreshing group of characters, and gorgeous presentation. Let me put it to you this way: When I bought my PS2 controller, brand new and out of the box, it was already broken. Some little thing in there rattles around, tumbling back and forth, getting caught under buttons so they won't depress or else get stuck there when they have, so playing any PS2 game is a chore for me; but Okami is so fun I didn't care about that.

Had it just cut down on the exposition text, it would have been truly great.
