Yeah, it's games that are causing this, not fast food resteraunts, parents not taking care of what their kids eat and the fact that school is escentialy kids sitting on their ass for hours, with half an hour dedicated to that 60 minutes of exercise they need.

Nope, it's the games that teenagers and adults are playing that makes kids fat. Yup.

He doesn't. He just wants to tax a popular thing, so he crafted a half ass reason for a bill, and used stupid logic that the idiots who think games are gone to rape their children will follow like it came straight from God.

The idea might not be too terrible, but if it passes it sets a BAD precedent. Actually... it is a terrible fucking idea no matter how you look at it. >_<

Kill this bill. Preferably with fire.

Battle against bullying shouldn't start at videogames but at parents who either don't have time to be decent people and teach their kids not to be huge douches or don't care. If parents ignorance/foolishness causes other children to suffer and be traumatized, those parents should go to jail.

Seriously what are You gonna do with games when the cause is obvious and noone wants to deal with the real problem ?

Its 2012...
When is this kinda stuff going to stop?

Sometimes I just want to get frozen with a note telling people to wake me up when the majority of people in this world become intelligent...

Wait, he's going after "violent" videogames? And his last name is Fourkiller?

Isn't that dangerous? That sounds like he could be encouraging serial murderers.

After proposing this bill, Mr. Fourkiller (LOL @ IRONY OF LAST NAME) went out shooting ridiculously overpowered guns at fish while drinking beers and talking about how the gays are ruining the country.

This reminds me of a picture I saw an extremely long time ago of this guy in a burning house saying how reckless it is for kids to play with matches.

Can we start taxing irresponsible and lazy parents for every breath then? Can we? No? That's just silly? ... yeah.

Bullying and the like has little to do with video games (and entertainment/media in general) and much, much more with parenting... but yeah, let's start taxing something that's already struggling so much with piracy. It'll only discourage those pirates, y'know?
This is completely irrelevant to the thread, but I just wanted to say that your avatar is amazing :D

Edit: Since we all think the same thing (that this guy proposing the bill is a moron) why don't we discus something else?

o_O if they're going to propose to tax everything but games "Rated E for everyone"...why not just push the tax against all games. That circumvents having to poorly define violent. At this point the government (all levels in all the states) might as well just bite my shiny metal ass. Also isn't it these same governments that like to subsidize and throw money at the video game industry to bring development to their states...eh of course it doesn't make sense. It's the gov't.

Only read first page so this may have already been addressed (good lord I hope it has)
Now I don't agree with what the guy is proposing, but before everyone goes all Internet Hate Machine on him can you guys at least read the sodding article?

Nowhere does he state that violent videogames turn kids fat, or into bullies, or into fat bullies. He claims his intent is to invest the tax collected into schemes that aim to reduce the prevalence of obesity and bullying.

Please guys, there's far too much hypocrisy in rallying against how badly worded the SOPA bill was when you can't even read an article properly before you go into 'Stalwart protecter of the industry' mode.

If child obesity is such a problem, why put the tax on Teen, Mature, and Adult games... I thought the ESRB put those ratings on there to say "Hey this game isn't for your 7 year old kid, FIND SOMETHING ELSE!!"

It just hurts me so much when I see these things, and realize another human-being could actually come-up with this garbage....

Well then by that logic they'll try and tax porn next.

Hmm...question why are they targeting the mature/adult only games since, you know, kids in school shouldn't be playing them in the first place and if they are isn't that bad on the parents part and...hey that might be why they are bullies no love from mummy and daddy.

PIRACY IS BAD!
WE ARE GOING TO TAX GAMES!
my brain!
the thing is that most kids pirate due to the relative low cost making games more expensive is only going to make it worse.

1% tax is not enough to stop anyone anyway. It's just enough to make people annoyed and make it seem like they are doing something.

I say that this is a good bill because it makes people happy without really restricting others (more than you can say about most bills).

I mean...1%...seriously? That's like, another dollar at most.

A tax on videogames to fund important projects is one thing. At face value it's no different than a tax on anything else. A more cynical angle, it's a tax on a big business that they want more out of than sales tax. Yeah, no one likes it, but it's harder to challenge "money has to come from somewhere".

Which makes you wonder why on earth he even add the blaming videogames as the source of two largely anomolus probles. Bulling has been around as long as we know, and there has never been an acceptible source. Obesity is a vastly bigger issue that swallows up excessive gaming among a couple hundred other facets.

To attack videogames says Representative Fourkiller is either displaying ignorance (clumsily spun to look like forethought), or a desire to target games as evil in world when the BIG laws are out of bounds (clumsily spun to look like concern). Attacking videogames as something to be purged or punished used to be an easy lay for the politically minded. But ever since Supreme Court ruled in our favor, they don't have that anymore. I certain some only aimed that way because it was a low hanging fruit, but there must be those with a genuine malice towards games and they have to find someway to use their power against their enemy. Even as superficially as a justification.

On the other hand, pulling the Games are the Problem card in his justification probably tripled the opposition so perhaps it is ignorance.
On the one hand, I would have less problem with a bill just saying "we need monies" than "we need to protect the children". I would ALMOST support such a bill, in some sense.

On the other hand, singling out one form of media, is just stupid and unfair. Even IF I give him that video games are causing bullying and childhood obesity, I have to ask about movies, television, and even books. Those can all lead to one or the other, by all the same logic. Singling out video games for a tax, no matter the reasoning, is just plain wrong.

Of course, I'm no fan of adding a tax to individual products, anyway. Who wants to pay more for their entertainment, right? All around, I dislike this proposed law.

He doesn't have to say that "violent video games are making children fat and violent." His law says that for him. It generally follows that if you make a law to prevent certain things, you tax the things that cause it and fund programs to curb that behavior. Like with anti-smoking laws. They tax cigarettes and the money is supposed to go prevent and treat illnesses like lung disease and cancer.

No matter what, there is a huge problem with him singling out video games in this law. Stupid law is stupid, no matter what anyone says.
