I needed to rant about this, but it really gets on my nerves when anyone does not like a song because it is old. Ive had instances of saying i like a song from months ago and getting funny looks as if I was retarded.

Not as bad, but when anyone says something is 'old but good' it also irritates me. The old bit isnt needed. Cant you say the track is just good.

I get this a lot on facebook, and was wondering if anyone gets the same too?

EDIT: What im trying to say as well is that there is a lack of harmony between those who like older music and those who like newer music. And those who appreciate both.

Eh, I generally prefer old music to new music.

To me, new music will never be as great as Chopin.

I was super happy when Namco made the game Eternal Sonata. It may be a mediocre jRPG, but I couldn't be happier than to be playing a game about Chopin.

I was also super happy to see a recent episode of My Little Pony contain Wagner.

To me, there is some good new music that appeals to me certainly. But they'll just never compare with the music of older times.

so, a song from last year is considered old now? hell, since I wasnt born in the last few days I might as well be considered ancient now...

anyway, I dont think I've ever encountered people who think like that, and seeing as I'm constantly listening to music from the last 5 decades, I'd tell them they're idiots for thinking what I'm listening is bad, simply because of the year it was composed...

Almost all the music I listen to would be considered old. Heck, I only actively listen to about 5 bands from 2000 onward.

OT: No, not really. Most of the people I associate with like older bands, so I never really get this from anyone.

Why can't these two sides live in harmony? Its weird actually... In my school there is these elitist who rant about how all the music now a days is fake... well that's not fair. I think that people who can rap as fast Eminem actually have some talent... its not easy.. Yes there is a fair bit of auto tuning but that isn't what is necessarily big. A lot of us teens find it annoying. Now that said there is also a group of people who also think that if you like classical they think you like the beetles... no. Beetles are terrible in my opinion. I prefer Men at Work or Tears for Fears. Classic rap as well, Bone thugs hold my "best rap song ever" award. I like both... I seriously have no clue why there is such a feud.

"Why do you listen to that song, it's so old!"
"So is your mom, but you still listen to her."
Just say that.

This may be a bit off-topic, but may I ask -

Why are you proud that you like something?

I don't mean to sound offensive at all here. After all, there are several other things to be proud of - doing a good job at school / work, raising kids well, contributing to society, artistic talents, etc, etc. I'm sure you must have achieved one or more of these in life.

And the question isn't just directed at you - why do so many people feel proud over their tastes and opinions, when there hasn't really been any contribution made from their side? Shouldn't pride originate from an achievement?
competely understand your question. Its more just the knowledge that im able to give every genre of music a go. I respect people that listen to a certain genre, but ive always felt that if i dont give it all a try, then i may be missing out on a lot. Im proud of myself that ive been open to everything is all im saying.

There is contribution though, every opinion you derive comes with some kind of time investment, and not just time, emotional investment, ideological investment, physical investment. Many opinions can come from weeks or years of investing those types of resources. Your tastes and your opinions are the manifestation of your ability to adapt and change, to form an understanding of complex systems and to challenge your own limits and your peers limits.

In my everyday life, I listen to new music, and with new, I mean that guesstimating 75% of it are from 2011. Why do I listen to new music? Becuse I've heard the "old" music before. Music, to me, is all about innovation.

But every now and then I fall back on what I've moved past, becuse it's not bad becuse its "old", it's just that there are new more intresting things to listen to. And I would never say that something is bad becuse its old, but old music can be bad becuse I dont like that praticular artist/genre/song.

I'm pretty sure there are just as many people who don't listen to new music just because it's new. I'm not sure why either group does it as it just means that they are excluding themselves from some good music either way.

I think the general reason is that most people who like newer songs like them simply because they sound good. In most cases the song doesn't represent anything more deep then the fact that they like the music they were hearing. In those cases almost always there will get to a point where they have heard it so much that they are no longer pleased by the sound but are bored with it. I'm sure this has happened to you at some point when you just get to a point where you don't want to listen to a song any more even if you really like it. I for one often go through phases where I will like a song and then not and then like it again later. Anyway back to my point so that is why a lot of the time when you bring up a song that is a little older people get bored of it and have moved on to whatever new songs they like, so when you bring up that you like an old song it is essentially the same as liking a new song that they don't like. Some people react stronger to differences of opinion but it is an issue that will occur to you all your life, might as well get used to it.

I'll listen to mostly anything (I don't really go for rap or dance but I can appreciate that someone has produced it, so hurrah for them)

Most of the time I listen to blues and swing, and I'm talking 1920 and 30 blues and swing, why? Cause I enjoy it, big bands full of talented musicians that toured the country in a bus. Guys with basic guitars producing the most amazing sounds. For me, that's music!
