Hello everyone I thought Id try something different in the whole politically correct mush fest that is the escapist's fem debates and collect solid information on the "sexism" online. I want details, I want stories,What game were you playing, I want times(vague times) I want to know what happened why it happened, was it really sexism or was ***** just a good a word as punch nugget far as they were concerned.

What I dont want is "NO THERE ALL SEXIST FORREALZ TRUST ME" I dont know you and frankly if its only every so often than perhaps its time to toughen up and suck it up.

See without any stories to fall back on claims of rampant sexism seem nebulous. They could literally just be the occasional jackass online but because of one or two times Im supposed to believe that being a male gamer means that "OMG TEH WOMENZ HATEZ!"

Now if its everyday thats a different story and thats what I want to hear from most of you ladies on here.

when does it happen, what games, how often. that kind of thing.

DETAILS

I made a female character in Runescape (It would have been when I was obsessed with Runescape so probably six years ago) just for teh l0lz.

I was shortly surrounded by numerous male characters all talking to me, a few of them asking if I wanted to "cyber". I logged out and haven't been on the account since.

I was really bored at one point and way, way, way, waaaaaay back when I played FLYFF, I made a female character for shits and giggles. I named her something like SassyTrapBob or something like that, which I figured would have been enough of a red flag that I wasn't looking for an online husbandu...

Y'know, that I had a penis.

I then proceeded to get no less than four guys trying to hold my hand through the beginning quests and flirting with me, which just made me laugh, it wasn't like I was saying anything that would give them the idea to do it. The best part was when I finally was just like, "Bro, I'm a guy," two just logged out immediately, one ported out, and the other demanded I remove him from my friends list. Not like I cared, I was planning on it anyway.

It makes me shake my head to see this shit in a game where you're essentially all controlling chibi anime characters. Or any game, really.

Well, I've never been on the receiving end due to my betesticled status.

I've seen a few other people cop it though. Mostly on TF2 and Killing Floor, once on L4D.

Your basic female-specific insults (*****, slut, **** etc), claims that they were just there because they wanted attention from guys, that sort of thing. One guy started asking a chick to suck his cock (how she was supposed to do that over a game of TF2 I'm not sure) and when she didn't respond he started yelling that he was going to find her and rape her. Judging by his voice he was sixteen at the very oldest.

Anyway, if you really want specific examples, there's this one website that specializes in exactly that. It's called FatUglyOrSlutty.com [http://fatuglyorslutty.com/]. Examples to keep you reading for days, along with pictures and everything. This would have to be my personal favourite [http://fatuglyorslutty.com/2012/05/28/a-cordial-approach/].

It's clear you'd prefer to believe that it's a rare thing done by the occasional jackass, but best assured, this crap happens a great deal.

In a CoD:mw2 game i once realised that one of the enemy team members was female. I started to talk nice to her, making complements and being really interested in her. I wanted to get a good conversation out of this and asked some question, you know the stuff everyone interested in women would ask, like "what`s your actual breast size?" or " do you swallow?" and suddenly she was getting pissed off.
Up to today i really don`t know what`s so bad about asking a couple of harmless questions so i stopped being nice and started the name calling (the usual insults suitable for women like this). She was my primary target now and i got my team mates into the little fun game. After only three minutes she left, so i did the same and started sending insult messages to her account. It`s kind of a hobby now since i still send her (and many others) messages on a dayly schedule.

EDIT: For anyone who hasn`t guessed it already, this is a joke. The most things i have gotten as insults is the usual name calling, when i play with english kids i`m automatical a nazi as soon as they discover i`m german. There was a time i`ve gotten pissed off over this but playing while ignoring it or screaming like Hitler is also fun. I guess female gamers best option is the mute function and playing with friends instead of stupid kids or horny old guys.

Okay, the posts in that site are very disturbing.
It's sad how internet anonymity allows some people to send such ignorant and improper messages and get away with it, not to mention all the horrid grammar and spellings...

Many people would rather believe this is a tiny minority, but really, when you've read fatuglyorslutty.com or http://www.notinthekitchenanymore.com/, or experienced it yourself, it's pretty fucking hard to believe that.

You get the basic insults, the creepy sexual stuff.
Oh yeah, and then you get the guys who fucking go off on one.
Seriously, these dudes have something really against women so bad that you can feel it seethe out of their every word.
Had that a couple times, once dude was just deciding to berate me because I was female and a nerd so I must be super ugly and a lesbian and a whore and must be fat and bla bla bla.
And the other one who seemed not even to be talking to me but to women in general how we're `toilet paper, to be used and thrown away`.

Ah, good times.

You know, that shit doesn't even bother me that much, what bothers me is how little other people will stand up for someone who is copping all that shit.
I mean, one of the dudes who went off on one did so because I corrected him about a tactic, my guild's response?
`Well, nobody wants to be schooled by a girl`.
Not good enough.

Masses of creepy sexual stuff. In WOW One GM threw me out of his guild because I refused to meet him for sex. Like IN REAL LIFE. :| and his girlfriend was in the guild and had just had a baby...I did nothing to make him think I was interested.

My guildies told me I couldn't pvp with them because I'm a girl so I made another character on horde and killed them all wearing their naxx 40 gear. The GM jokingly kicked me out of the guild for 10 minutes cos of it :p

I've had people tell me I was 'carried' through content in WOW when I had highest healing and decursing in that content.

Guys on TF2 kicking me out of games when I speak on comms.

People assuming my best mate was the GM of my own guild and I was just playing because I was his 'girlfriend' :| when it said Guild Master right there in the goddamn roster.

Not sure if sexist but a guild passed me over for the legendary mace despite me being highest on DKP and attendance and gave it to this useless officer paladin who dc'd constantly and did one de curse on Yogg Saron fights. The old GM had a massive fight with the officers over that. He was a good guy at least. It had the stench of 'boys club' about it.

Most of the time when I meet a guy online I'll be friendly like I want to be friends and then he will go off in whisper asking about my tits and photos and stuff. It's horrible and really makes me think less of them. This isn't just in WOW I've had it in TF2, LFD and Mass Effect co op too.

hmm well I pretended to be a female just out of spite to someone on myth as a prank. I started flirting with the guy and he really got into me for two weeks. and then I revealed my secret in front of my clan and his clan mates and thus the joke was on him and everyone including him was laughing their asses off.

so yeah I dont know if you would classify it as sexist but it was damn right creepy the guys trying to hit on girls. Especially since the myth community is an average of 50 players peak traffic (200 people on tournament weeks)

Its scarier the comments actually supporting the guys comment to the girl just because he was polite.

To be honest I've seen more ageism than sexism online.

I heard two guys harassing someone because they had a high voice (I guess they automatically assumed they were a twelve year old boy), saying stuff like "Why the hell are you even playing this game you little shit? Can't you read? It says 18+ on the box!"

It was funny as hell when it turned out the person they were yelling at was an adult woman. Surprisingly they left her alone after that, no "Get back in the kitchen!" or anything.

I've personally never been on the receiving end of sexism. Not apart from the odd joke or two. Maybe because I'm good at not sticking out, so people don't notice the female playing with them in the game.

I'd like to remind people that unless you think flirting in real life is sexist, flirting with people online is not, please don't adopt the witch hunting attitude of www.fatuglyorslutty.com

I've seen posts on there that have blatantly come from confused 10 year olds. Stuff like "Hello there, you're really good on call of duty, will you be my online girlfriend please?" be trashed by people as sexist.
Anyone who feels the need to demonise polite, respectful, socially insecure nerds who can only pluck up the courage to ask out a girl online, are horrible horrible people who have much bigger problems than said insecure nerds.

Anyway OT:

I once went on this web site where there were all these people posting comments saying "all male gamers are misogynist." And accusing people with any kind of social insecurity of being "creepy" for trying to flirt online.
And every time the topic of sexism came up it was used as an excuse for mass man-hating, especially from the self hating males on the forum.

I mean right now there's a post on there where people are supposed to be sharing stories about sexism they've encountered in games, and all they're doing is taking the piss out of people who as too scared the make romantic advances in real life.

Oh god, the violins. There must be a chorus of them, keening softly for the mighty struggles of the socially insecure gamer.

You whine about generalizing nerds, and then proceed to generalize everyone else...from the posts at fatuglyorslutty, to the "self hating males" on the forum, to making comments like "all these people". This isn't just hypocrisy, it also shows a stunning lack of awareness and understanding of the other side of this issue. I don't have to "hate myself" to recognize that my frustrated sexuality is of significance to absolutely no one except for me, and it's certainly not the responsibility of utter strangers to satiate it.

If I spend a portion of my life socially inept, and as a result my fumbling or inappropriate advances are creeping out women, that's on me. Learning how to comport yourself in society is a personal responsibility. If nerds want to be desired, a good first step is behaving in ways that make them desirable. Howling about tits on XBOX Live is probably not a good first step.

I've been lucky so far when playing WoW (don't play many other games online) but I think it's mostly because I don't really make a big deal about being a girl. Also, and I'm going to generalise here, I'm playing on european servers only. This may seem irrelevant but it seems that people in europe are more accepting about players making toons of the oposite gender. I play with both male and female toons and plenty of guys I've played with play girl toons. Also, the guild I am in has several high-ranked members who are female. Anyone insults them, the whole guild is there for them.
Still, I've had some experiences where people say "she's bad because she's a girl" but most where so stupid I chalked it up to bad jokes. My favourite was when someone implied that I couldn't read because I am a girl.

Only annoying experience I had was when I played Flyff, made a female toon, then for about 4 levels a guy followed me, making a heart emote, never leaving me alone. I never talked to him, never did anything to imply I was really a girl, nothing. I wonder why he did it at all...

I have never seen or heard anything sexist online aimed at a female gamer, unless you count flirting as sexist. Sexist comments, sure, but not aimed at anybody in particular.

I have on the other hand, seen a lot of "White Knights" who see it as their duty to treat the girl like a flawless princess so that nobody can dare criticise her for anything that she does. She trash talks guys, and that's hilarious, but as soon as the guy trash talks back, the abuse starts.

I have no doubt that there are many nasty, misogynistic bastards, but there are so many cases where a guy saying something nasty to a girl is automatically assumed to be sexist, as opposed to just being a prick. Unless you see how they behave around male players, you cannot just assume that they are sexist if they treat a female player badly.

You don't need to put "White Knights" in quotation marks. Like "entitlement" that particular phrase has been absolutely run into the ground around these parts. The anti-anti-sexism lobby sees a White Knight around every corner.
