Own Borderlands on Steam, Get Duke Nukem Demo

The Duke Nukem Forever [http://www.amazon.com/Duke-Nukem-Forever-Pc/dp/B002I0JAJ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287000408&sr=8-1] demo isn't just for people buying Borderlands' "Game of the Year" edition anymore.

Last week, we learned that Gearbox would be including a key to the Duke Nukem Forever First Access Club get the demo out to as many people as possible [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104061-Borderlands-GOTY-Includes-Groovy-Duke-Nukem-Bonus]: If you're already an owner of Borderlands on Steam, you're getting the Duke, too.

Readers over at Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/5661933/looks-like-all-steam-borderlands-owners-get-duke-nukem-forever-access] noticed that they had a shiny First Access Club key attached to their copy of Borderlands on Steam. Others have confirmed that they have the same - whether you've bought any of the existing Borderlands DLC or not.

It really does seem that Gearbox is intent on letting as many gamers as possible know that "Hey, Duke Nukem Forever is actually being made, it's actually coming." It's a shame that they don't really have any feasible way of getting the demo out to people who bought Borderlands on consoles - how would you prove that they actually bought the game and weren't just renting it or something?

Still, I did buy and play Borderlands on Steam, so looks like I'll be getting my hands-on time with the Duke early enough.

Not like that. Minds out of the gutter, people.

Well, there go people buying Direct2drive version and getting screwed over.

Also, have they "fixed" the DRM problems with Borderlands? Problems, as in, DRM being secretly patched onto the game?

I noticed this last night. Steam suddenly updated Borderlands, and when I started the game up, I was greeted with my Duke Nukem Forever First Access Club Code. Damn that is some title.

Still screws over people who actually made the game 'worthy' of a 'game of the year' (eyes can't be rolled enough at that) edition. I was hoping my old copy would still actually have some use.

Umm... if they are trying to get the demo to as many people as possible, why not just release the damn thing normally? Y'know... to everyone.

Last I checked, "everyone" included more people then "individuals who own Borderlands".

If they want to get it to everyone, why not just release it as a standard downloadable demo?

I've got to say, this has been the greatest PR stunt to get people to buy Borderlands ever made.
I should complete and release Duke Nukem Forever when my game stops selling as well.

On the one hand this is quite a bit awesome, but on the other hand I do have to feel a little screwed since I own the box copy. You dedicated fans that bought the steam version just had to press a little button, but I had to make a treacherous 13 mile hike uphill both ways through a blizzard to get to GameStop at midnight only to then wait 10 hours for the store to actually open.

Pretty much this...

I would like to try the demo, I have Borderlands on 360 and I am not going to buy the GOTY edition, nor am I going to pay for something I then have to download using Steam.

Oh, I didn't notice until I saw this article, well, lucky me, I only have vanilla Borderlands on Steam and I'll get my filthy hands on Duke early =).

Time for them to make the retail keys work on Steam, darnit!

Yeah, if they're truly dedicated to getting the demo out to everyone... why not just have it as download? I wonder if they're just trying to flog more copies of Borderlands... hmmmmm

I'm just going to try adding my retail key to steam, see what happens.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Borderlands has nothing to do with DNF, so why do I need to buy B just to play a demo of DNF?
Why not let me try the game as well, as a potential customer?
I am simply not going to buy a game I may very well not even be interested in for a mere demo.
I didn't understand it when the Halo 3 beta came with Crackdown, and I don't understand it now.

Well at least I'll get something decent from Borderlands. Still, for £5 I can't really complain.

We get it early, but you still get it.

You start the the game holding Duke's unit as he does his business at a urinal. I think our minds are right to be in the gutter on this one. :p

*ahem* I think I know how they could prove if you weren't just renting the game on consoles. Check trophy and achievement unlock times. That could work if they could find a way to automate it. Just punch in your GamerTag or PSN ID in a website, it does a scan of your profile, and if you have achievements or trophies unlocked from quite some time ago, you didn't just rent the game for the demo and bam, here's a code you can redeem on the XBLA or Playstation Store for a demo.

And people wonder why gamers are wary of marketing stunts.
