Own The Director's Cut Of Captain America On DVD This May

If you can't wait to watch Captain America fight the Red Skull, you'll be able to buy the 1990 movie in less than two months.

It isn't common knowledge, but this summer's Captain America movie is actually the second time Steve Rogers has appeared on the silver screen. A long time ago (21 years, in fact), director Albert Pyun was drafted to make a film adaptation of Marvel's iconic character, which has been widely-reviled by some and beloved as a B-movie by others. If that kind of movie sounds like your cup of tea, then good news: a director's cut of Captain America is getting a DVD release come this May.

A little background: Captain America was originally supposed to be a big-budget film that would coincide with the character's 50th anniversary. Unfortunately, the financial backers pulled out literally a few days before filming began. As a result, the movie was made for a budget of $10 million, and was generally considered terrible (though my neighbor and I wore out the VHS cassette when we got ahold of the copy in 1992).

However, Pyun, who has generated some pretty solid goodwill for his director's cut of Cyborg (another guilty pleasure of mine), has revealed that his version of Captain America is getting released on DVD and Blu-ray in a couple of months. The release is presumably tied to July's film, but it's going to be a 124-minute version of the movie (as opposed to the original 97-minute version). The release will incude "a few added scenes, and is more character-oriented and less 'super hero action,'" as well as a different soundtrack.

Admittedly, I probably won't buy the movie when it's released, but I can almost guarantee that I'll rent it.

I remember seeing this when I was young and being completely floored by how dated it already seemed.

Not sure what I think about a "director's cut," but it can't hurt THAT much to try it, I guess.

And the reason for making a superhero movie contain less superheroics is why? That is, short of "We didn't have the budget for superheroics so we downplayed them as much as possible and hoped nobody noticed."

A hilarious review of the movie by the Spoony One himself! If you've never seen him, check his site out sometime.

And the sequel review, yes, there's a sequel!

Enjoy!

All I know about this is the Nostalgia Critic review of it which (if I recall) showed it to be an absolutely awful movie of epically bad proportions.

So no, I will not be buying or watching it.

Also, the latest movie is like the fourth time he's appeared on screen. There was a Reb Brown 80s Captain America, and it had a sequel! The Spoony One did a series of pretty hilarious reviews of it.

EDIT: Ninja'd twice, by people directly above me. It's late, I'm tired, and I should really be wearing my glasses and, y'know, actually reading other people's comments.

AWESOME!

Sorry fans, but I enjoy this movie for what it is despite all it's flaws. It's far better than junk like Batman and Robin. It's funny to watch and entertaining.

I will definitely want to pick this up, hope it comes to Australia, if not I'll ebay it.

PS: Glad to see love for Cyborg, it's also a guilty pleasure of mine and I've been anticipating this directors cut too.

"SIEG HEIL! *BLAM!*"

I'd pay for a "Director's Cut" DVD that just had that scene, looped over and over again.

Then again, I could watch it for free on YouTube. Or watch the Nostalgia Critic's review. Eh.

It's as if someone beat the Asylum guys by going back in time to make a terrible knock-off of the newer Captain America movie.

On a side note, this DVD release can only mean one thing: RiffTrax!!

SO would I! Funniest scene in the movie (well...out of the parts that made it into the nolstalgia critic's review anyway)
