OK, so this video [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108641-Leaked-Microsoft-Video-Reveals-Horrible-Future-for-PC-Gaming] sparked a bit of a fuzz when, near the end part, "P0wned" is written instead of "pwn3d", which apparently is the correct way to write it.

I must admit I'm a bit unsure about this... Generally internet slang is just some kind of twistification of an English word (screw you, that's a word now too). How people write given words in online context hardly seems to matter to many now a days, so it puzzled me that people are prepared to dismiss the entire video based on that single thing alone...

Is there even a correct way to write it? Will looking it up in the dictionary at your local library show it is written "pwn3d"? I'm not a fan of including numbers in my words, and so rarely if ever do. The whole leet-speak has passed me by I guess.

I'm sure there are quite a few spelling mistakes and incorrect wording in my post, as English is not my native language and I'm prone to make those mistakes, but if I didn't just now say this you wouldn't really care/notice it. In this global society we've gotten used to words not always being spelled correctly, so it seems weird that it would even come up when concerning a made-up word created by the very people that they themselves misspell everything else on a daily basis.

Please don't chop my head off, I'm trying to be civil here...

owned. I believe that pwned was started because of a typo because o and p are next to eachother.

Honestly? It all boils down to personal preference, I feel. I don't really think it matters if one misspells a word that doesn't have any correct spelling anyway.

The only right way for internet slang (or leet speak) is to not care.
So they had it wrong by default.

pwned is the correct spelling I believe, and by correct, I mean the original. pwn3d would be its integration into 1337

There is no correct way to spell anything.

Language is arbitrary but also consensual.

Meaning that basically there is no inherid correct spelling but rather a consensus of any possible group of people that will determinate wheather or not a given spelling is "right" or not.

Given the fact that the internet is a very vast and complicated community I fell like saying
"Write it like you want, as long as it is understandable what you mean."

I always thought this too.

So people are getting up in arms about the misspelling of a misspelling?

The internet is a strange place.

Nobody really cares, they were just being ironic.
Hopefully.

I don't say any of those things, I prefer English.

You're all wrong, the correct spelling is "pwn'd." None of this numbers as letters bullshit.

I don't really even use the word anymore. I used to type in leetspeak when I first started using the web, because it seemed to be the cool thing to do. Now I use proper gr4mm3r.

You would be correct, good sir. Though now since its gained its own identity separate from its phonetic counterpart, new and more unusual conjugations are emerging. Thus p0wn3d.

When everything is made up from the start there really isn't any incorrect answer.

Well it sure isn't written with a "po" in the front. It's either one or the other, not both.
Personally, I use pwned.

By Odin's beard! Are we going to have Grammar Nazis for 1337-speak now?
It's 1337-sp34k, mate :p

Uhm, why don't we just assume that they went with the phonetic spelling of "powned", or pwnd in our circles. Not like we can expect everybody to be familiar with gaming colloquialisms...

Pwn'd is the correct spelling, or at least as close to correct as you can get with a slang word born from a typo. That said, p0wned was actually pretty common at one point, so it's not as ridiculous as some people think. The main reason that portion of the video caused such a stir is because it was the one section of the video that was supposed to appeal to "hard core" gamers, and it got the slang wrong, or at least used it in the wrong form for modern usage. It kind of came across as a middle aged dad trying to act cool and hip by using words like, well, "cool" and "hip."
