Painkiller Returns in Hell and Damnation

Heaven's hitman is coming back for more.

Released all the way back in 2004, Painkiller [http://www.amazon.com/Painkiller-Black-Edition-Pc/dp/B0009YN1T4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338843796&sr=8-1] was a fantastically over-the-top FPS, a balls-to-the-wall old-school shooter about a dead man forced to murder his way out of Purgatory. In subsequent years, it became noteworthy for another, less flattering reason: spawning terrible sequels. Perhaps recognizing that it had captured lightning in a bottle, People Can Fly, the studio behind the original game, moved on to other things, leaving the creation of follow-up games to other, lesser studios. And boy, did it show.

But that's not stopping Nordic Games and The Farm 51 from trying yet again with Painkiller: Hell and Damnation, a new shooter that will mark the return of Daniel Garner, the original Heavenly hitman. What's it all about? Fast-paced gameplay, murdering dudes and "stunning enormo-boss fights." As far as the plot goes, nobody knows and nobody cares.

"We're proud of the shiny new splendor of the game's graphics, but we're doubly proud we've made player skill the most important part of the game," said Reinhard Pollice of Nordic Games. "In addition to the single player campaign, we're putting a tremendous emphasis on the game's multiplayer component."

Painkiller: Hell and Damnation is being developed by The Farm 51, best known (relatively speaking) for Necrovision [http://www.amazon.com/Necrovision-Pc/dp/B001LYGUB2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338843840&sr=8-1], a 2009 shooter straight out of the Painkiller mold which in gameplay terms unfortunately had more in common with Painkiller sequels. Here's hoping that this go-around with the real thing works out better. Details about platforms, release date and other such things will be released "in due time."

So after 7 years riddled with lackluster expansions and sequels, instead of just moving on to something else they think the best thing to do is to simply try again?

All my skepticism, this game is receiving it.

Frickin' hell. Why don't they realize that the problem isn't just their game, it's that the market is flooded with FPS's & it's unlikely that they can find anything innovative to add that would make a new Painkiller special.

Just like Neil Gaiman decided not to create a vampire movie right now because of the sparkly vampire flooding since *shudder* Twilight, they should look for a new direction to move to.

Oh boy I sure can't wait to fight the exact same enemies as in the first game, but with slightly higher resolution textures!

This is undoubtly the best thing I've heard from E3. Painkiller's had this coming for a long time, having gone through a hard time with it's line of expansions. A fresh, newly made sequal is just what it needs, and made by a studio founded by former developers from People Can Fly.

Very exciting stuff. I can't wait to hear more about this.

Oh good, now nobody has to spend two seconds wondering if they might make something that won't end up in the trash can in 15 minutes after purchase. Good of them to be honest about it, rather than play it up as some sort of savior of the series or anything.

I'm betting on...a 7 hour campaign maximum, with a bazillion ranks of multiplayer levelling up and a prestige mode where you do it all over again for no reason.
