well i'm proud of what England once was, gaint empire and shakespeare etc. However it does seem to be going down hill. Doesnt help with our oever the top Political correctness and health and safety, as well as the increasing "benefits culture" ( i dont mean people who cant't work for medical reasons i mean those who just choose not to) and out government at the moment isnt exactly fantastic.

I personally dont see how you can be patriotic of the past, it really should be your country as it is now

I proud of being Swedish because... well we're next to Denmark, and they have a some good music festivals (Roskilde Wheeew!)and banging fifteen year olds is perfectly legal. Patriotism is dead. Its a relic of Imperial times. The most vitriolic patriots I know are Americans, out of some misguided belief that God somehow favours America (I hate the whole 'God Bless America' thing). I'm proud of my country but I associate patriotism with ignorance the whole 'We are better than you because of where we are from' is a bit school kid-ish for me.

I think he was French, he was called Coeur De Lion, which is French for Lion heart.

if i'm right two of the three Lions on the English royal coat of arms are French, LOL, "spy sapping my coat of arms?."

i'm dutch, and i hate it, most of the people here are downright assholes. of course, there are some nice people too, but we as a nation accomplish shit in the world. The netherlands used to be the mose powerful country in the world in a distant history, but now this country has gone to crap and i'm thinking about moving to another country.

Patriotism just means that you love your country, not that you think it's superior. That, m'learned friend, is nationalism. I quote admire the American patriotic spirit, God knows we could do with some of it over here.

Everybody in England ever has complained that it's cold and always raining (well, less rain and more constant drizzle). It's sort of a national tradition. Like grumbling (not moaning, mind, since moaning implies you'd actually do something about it - if we did that, we'd have nothing to grumble about!)

Also, more on-topic, I think patriotism itself is pretty silly. At best it's wishful thinking, and at worst it's a tool for cotrolling the masses (see 9/11).

No im not proud to be danish. Why would I be proud to be a nationality? It isn't like ive done anything to become a dane. I was born that way so it seems weird to be proud of it. Patriotism/national pride is not something I think very highly about. If people thought more about the world as a whole, instead of the little part of it that is their own nation, we would be much better of as a specie.

I am however happy that I was born in Denmark. Being in the happiest country of the world rocks!

Why am I proud of being Canadian?

Canada has a smaller population than Kenya. Despite this however, it's a member of the G8, and one of the wealthiest countries in the world. It's economic freedoms are toppled only by US economic freedoms. But also while scoring well with its economy, Canada has a world renowned social structure. It's education, environmental stability, healthcare, and social welfare are within the top 5 of the world (only behind more dedicated socialist states, such as Sweden and Iceland). Canada takes all the best parts of American style government, and crossbreeds them with all the best parts of European style government (with particular emphasis on British government). Yes, Canada isn't "the best" on any one front, but it's pretty fucking awesome on all fronts, making for a sound balance between economic and social freedoms.

Yes, Canada doesn't have a History. Give us a fucking break. We've only been around for a little over 100 years.

We also stand out because we both believe in Group Rights, and are SO SO SO SO SO close to legalizing Marijuana that only the cranky right wing old farts in our country are keeping it at bay.

How can someone be proud of something he/she did not him/herself accomplish/contribute to? (slashes ftw). Also, if you can be proud of the great individuals originating from your nations, shouldn't you also be ashamed of the less great individuals?

Example: If you are german, for instance, and proud of say, Immanuel Kant or Goethe, shouldn't you by the same logic be ashamed of the funny-mustasched politician of the 30-40ies? Of course not. You are responsible for your own actions, and should only take credit for your own accomplishments - same goes for pride and shame.

Patriotism when taken too far creeps me out quite a lot.
As for me, I'm not patriotic at all, I don't even like Ireland that much. Sweden's okay, but I'm hardly filled with pride when I see the flag, I'm just not a very nationalistic person.
I also disagree with the acomplishments of individual people being chalked up as a win for the country they were born in, it doesn't make any difference where they were born.
