My previous pc started smoking from the vents whenever I plugged in the AC adapter. The laptop is out of warrenty so im getting a new one. The problem is ive played mass effect 1 and part of 2 on my old gaming laptop and it'd be terrible to lose all of the progress from both games, as well as my unique sheppard and downloaded content.

Is there any way to transfer the save files over once I reinstall the mass effects to my new laptop?

(Hope this isnt the wrong place to post this, but I know alot of gamers here have experiance with mass effect!)

Thanks for the replies in advance!

Unless you can risk plugging in your Pc to quickly boot it and copy the save files onto a memory stick, I doubt there's much you can do =(

If it's on Steam the cloud should be in possession of your files and stuff, if not, do what they say

I would see if you can find a external hard drive case for a laptop hard drive at a local electronics store. Shouldn't cost that much. Once you have that, you can pull out your hard drive from your laptop and install it in the external case. Those hard drive cases are usually a USB hook up so you can hook it up to any computer to see if the hard drive is still good.

The easiest way would be to take it to a PC shop. If the data is salvageable then they ought to be able to do it.

You might want to try the suggested ways first, they'll certainly be cheaper, but there is a small risk that you could make things worse and lose the data altogether.

So long as the hard drive is undamaged you should be able to. Unfortunately, it's a laptop so you can't simply pull out the hard drive and stick it in another machine.
You lie. That's precisely what I did to get a gigabyte of files off of my dad's dying laptop.
Just make sure that it won't be the C: drive, or your laptop's OS might start installing a pile of new drivers needlessly. I'm trusting that the laptop is modern enough to have SATA connections, in which case you'll just need to hook up the power and data cables. If it's an IDE one, you might need something to convert the size. After that, it's a case of ctrl+c, ctrl+v.

Asumeing the HDD in your laptop is still working this is a easy fix!

Most models of laptops, will somewhere on the bottom have a cover, held in place by 1 or 2 screws (it might have several, actualy.) remove these, and you should get to the 2.5" HDD. Depening on the model, this will be eigther a S-ATA or IDE drive.

Then you order an external USB Case for it, could be one of these.

For IDE drives

For SATA drives

On most laptops this is realy easy and can be done by anyone! and only requires a screwdriver.

On the subjekt of mass effect, it is possible to copy the intire installation to the new computer if you realy want, though it might require you to manualy create the refrences in the registration database before it works.

Just wanted to say feel your pain dude. Either my GPU or PSU is getting ready to die as I hear really loud rattling if I play a game for about an hour. Just got a replacement PSU so I hope that fixes it. I really don't want to have to eat a restocking fee then go buy another GPU which is more expensive to replace.
