Umm, all the people who bought it on PS3 got it for PC. Lets do some maths.

PS3+PC > XBOX+PS3

Therefore

PC > XBOX

Profit?

PC is epic win, PS3 is awesome just cos of steam!

Edit: Had another thought.

Are they saying that PC outsold PS3+XBOX or PS3 and XBOX

Because then it is...

PS3+PC > Ps3

PS3+PC > XBOX

Which is just obvious.

I wonder if they include the free copies of Portal 2 in their calculations of which sold better. In other words, did they go by sales or how many people play on PC? Because if it's only how many people have a PC copy, then of course it's going to be higher then the others. PC has people who bought it specifically for PC as well as the majority of people who bought the PS3 version. Not to mention all the copies that were gained by people who got the golden potato (myself included). I think that really makes the whole thing a little less clear unless they specified.

Not that it matters though. Portal 2 is a good game and, while I prefer my controller, I can understand why the PC version was favored. Mods are important to a relatively short game like this after all.

Very good to see Portal 2 being a larger success on PC... especially since I have yet to buy/play Portal 2.... someday.

Yet more proof that developers can survive on PC if they make quality games.

While i'm no Valve fanboy, I think it unlikely Valve would include PS3 sales as part of their sales figures, they would probably do it the same as other companies, in the individual games they sold.

I would love to see Total War: Shogun 2 come to consoles. They're not exactly frantic games and it could work even though I'll admit there would be a learning curve. I understand though that I'm probably in the end all minority of "I use consoles because they're idiot proof and it's not so much that it's an Xbox as it is a platform to play games" category.
Just no.

we all know the strategy games of all sorts wouldn't work well on the console its not that its too complex its just that its not built for it. (Though there are a few exceptions)

The one of the main selling points of total war games is that its huge and "perdy" if we ported to consoles could you honestly say it would be a good port? regardless of how much effort the developers put into it.

oh and two words.

>>>>no mouse<<<<
You know it's guys like you who make this crap not work. Instead of saying, "Maybe we could make it work." You plug your ears and say "La-la-la can't hear you."

If they gave a damn about porting it, it would be good. I've played Command & Conquer 3 and Red Alert 3 on 360 and I managed to beat the hell out of both stories. On a console, just in case you missed that. Total War is not the same frantic beast either. So it's totally doable.

It would totally be able to play total war without a freaking mouse. It's not like it requires pinpoint precision all the time.

Don't be a tool over it. It's totally possible if people gave a crap.

I attribute it to the fan made levels that are possible on PC. It's like developer content, but faster.

*Points at other developers*

LET THIS BE A LESSON TO THE LOT OF YOU!

If BF3 mimics this I hope we see a shift in how developers treat the PC platform.
First of all, it's a valve game, this shouldn't come as a surprise at all. To anyone. Ever.

Secondly, it won't. Enough people are already saying they won't buy BF3 on PC due to Origin's shitness and it's a shooter. It will sell more on console.

I sometimes wonder why The Escapist allows these posts, yet when someone mentions PC gamer elitism, it's basically an instant mod-wrath...

Yay, double standards. And good job, y'know, generalising the vast majority of gamers.

I'd like to see the individual unit cost comparisons.

Portal 2 on xbox was what 59.99

Portal 2 on steam was like 49.99 or even infinitely cheaper, because of steam deals

You can get all of valves game in one shot for 100 bucks so that's 100 divided by all the games with some other ratio's thrown in so how much is portal 2 now?

It also had that awesome ARG which helped move some indie games and what not.

Pc game had all the fanfare and a tonne of sales. Consoles were just more expensive and there to buy.

Did that include the copies that came with PS3 version?

I'm not surprised tbh, what with Valve, Steam PC...

Oh wow. That sure showed us console gamers, huh. How about we all spontaneously combust... let's not taint the industry any longer with our inferior choice of gaming platform.

I mean, seriously... why does this article even exist? Why are Portal 2 PC sales so spectacularly newsworthy? Why does this thread have such a "fighting the good fight" vibe?

I'm actually legitimately amazed that this made an article. Who actually expected the console ports to sell better?

Is anyone surprised by these numbers? Honestly, Valve is mainly a PC developer.

If you read between the lines you might take it that Portal did not actually do that well. Of course we won't get actual figures for valve, but I this this story is meant to distract people.

If PC was the best selling platform, but with it's usual figures being below that of consoles, it means that portal did horribly on consoles and therefore horribly for overall sales figures....

So they spin the story as being Portal sold best on PC to distract from what would be the other headline of Portal 2 sold disappointingly overall for a multi format title.

Hmmmmmmmm, nope, don't think so. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111241-Portal-2-Sells-3-Million-for-Science]

OT: Not a surprise, really. Valve is a PC developer, ergo, this game will sell best on PC.

Contrary to some PC gamers beliefs, console gamers aren't all a bunch of retarded little kids. I'm a console gamer and Portal 2 was one of the best games ever. You're just bitter because your platform is quickly becoming obsolete, and when tablets become powerful enough to run games and do anything a PC can while being mobile, PC gaming will be truly dead.
^ Translated; *"Contrary to some PC gamers beliefs, console gamers aren't all a bunch of retarded little kids. I'm a console gamer and my system is better then your system! I am also going to bring up something that has nothing to do with Portal 2 like a tablet to show that even though your system can do more and everything I mention is just a cut down version of your system there are other things that are almost as good. I'm a console gamer and I support this message.*

It is well established that PC's CAN be more capable to run games if the right amount of cash is pored into them. Saying that other things can beat a PC is ridiculous because computers in general are able to do anything consoles can. My computer can't run Crysis 2 or anything that I want to look pretty so I play it on my 360. Doesn't mean the 360 is better just means that I don't want to put the money or time into making my PC run up to be a solid gaming device. Consoles are great, PC's are great, macs are great, mobile devices are great. Nothings dead and none of the above are showing any signs of dieing anytime soon.

TL;DR version:
Portal 2 outsold consoles on the PC. Talk about why not about personal preferences because nobody cares.

I'd be really impressed if Valve forgot to take away the PS3 sales figures from the PC sales figures. I really don't think they would be that stupid.
