Is it any surprise given the majority of Valve fanboys are also PC fanboys? That's where they cut their teeth. You'd find exactly the same thing when/if the next Half Life installment ever sees the light of day.

That's...um...cool.

I guess.

This won't change the industry but I guess it's good news if you're both Pro-PC and anti-console.

But I play on a Mac and Nintendo consoles.
"I play on a mac"

That made me giggle.. sorry.

Contrary to some PC gamers beliefs, console gamers aren't all a bunch of retarded little kids. I'm a console gamer and Portal 2 was one of the best games ever. You're just bitter because your platform is quickly becoming obsolete, and when tablets become powerful enough to run games and do anything a PC can while being mobile, PC gaming will be truly dead.
^ Translated; *"Contrary to some PC gamers beliefs, console gamers aren't all a bunch of retarded little kids. I'm a console gamer and my system is better then your system! I am also going to bring up something that has nothing to do with Portal 2 like a tablet to show that even though your system can do more and everything I mention is just a cut down version of your system there are other things that are almost as good. I'm a console gamer and I support this message.*

It is well established that PC's CAN be more capable to run games if the right amount of cash is pored into them. Saying that other things can beat a PC is ridiculous because computers in general are able to do anything consoles can. My computer can't run Crysis 2 or anything that I want to look pretty so I play it on my 360. Doesn't mean the 360 is better just means that I don't want to put the money or time into making my PC run up to be a solid gaming device. Consoles are great, PC's are great, macs are great, mobile devices are great. Nothings dead and none of the above are showing any signs of dieing anytime soon.

TL;DR version:
Portal 2 outsold consoles on the PC. Talk about why not about personal preferences because nobody cares.

Something comes up about console and PC and the PC gamers act like smug douchebags as is stereotype, because they are in denial of the fact that without Valve the platform would have been in the grave a long time ago, and the fact that in a few gens, people won't even have PC's anymore because mobile alternatives will have become the norm.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because some of the PC gamers in this thread treat all console gamers like retards who only play Call of Duty so they can feel so much more superior then us dirty console peasants and justify to themselves the $500 (or more) investment they have made which could have probably be better spent elsewhere.
Oh don't worry, I will get on them PC braggarts as soon as I find some being truly retarded. Your comment just caught my attention first.

And if it wasn't for the PS3 my next comment wouldn't even be a viable thing to say but...in a few gens, there will be no more consoles. Gaming devices started out to deliver arcade fun to a home market, you have stated yourself that mobile devices and such are pretty much doing what PC's do ("computers" but the term PC is easy to use.) I brought up the PS3 because that is just a few steps away from being a full fledged computer. Put a linix OS in that sucker and you literally have a computer (that's what I used mine for, for some time anyways.) You make something like another thing it will eventually turn into that thing.

What I am saying is not too long from now even mobile devices will just be small computers (PC's) if they are not already such. Heck not too long ago you could get a phone, now that little things are stripped down computers that can make phone calls too. Basically PC gamers are right to say that the PC gaming world has not and will not die but I do agree with you that the smug ones should be kicked down a peg...just not like you are doing it because that's not solving nor helping the issue in any way. Cant fight fire with flaming because then we all look gay...or maybe I phrased that wrong?

For the record, I hate gaming on my computer, I would much rather play on my 360 but that doesn't change my position on PC gaming not being a dieing recreation.

LET THIS BE A LESSON TO THE LOT OF YOU!

If BF3 mimics this I hope we see a shift in how developers treat the PC platform.
First of all, it's a valve game, this shouldn't come as a surprise at all. To anyone. Ever.

Secondly, it won't. Enough people are already saying they won't buy BF3 on PC due to Origin's shitness and it's a shooter. It will sell more on console.

I sometimes wonder why The Escapist allows these posts, yet when someone mentions PC gamer elitism, it's basically an instant mod-wrath...

Yay, double standards. And good job, y'know, generalising the vast majority of gamers.
Please go ahead and read the REST of my post, you can see im clearly not serious.

Since Origin exists, the console version will far outsell its PC counterpart.

OT: Not really that much of a surprise since every PS3 copy came with a PC copy. So that way every PS3 sale will be a PC sale as well.

Not that I doubt that this wouldn't have been the case otherwise, but surely that couldn't have had anything to do with the fact that they offered it for 50 percent off on Steam a month ago.

Gives the worst part of the PC community ample opportunity to spew hateful bullshit, but, hey, for the rest of you, I'm glad that there are developers who treat your platform with respect and that you reward them for it.

HA! HA!

I needed a good laugh to kick-start my day, much appreciated, man!

Now, to address the seriousness of your post:

For some reason it's only the console die-hards that have this skewed impression that the PC platform is "dying." I, for one, can't seem to fathom how this is. The sales figures for PC titles have been skewed for years now. The figures presented by the brick&mortar shops like GameStop haven't painted a vivid picture of the scene, as the digital distribution platforms aren't releasing their sales figures. So, it appears that the platform is selling far worse than it's console brethren . . . even though DD companies (Steam being one of them) have flat out stated over the last couple of years this is far from the case.

To be quite frank - mobile devices aren't going to overshadow a true PC anytime soon. Simply because they're entering an age where they can run most games at low to decent visuals doesn't mean they're set for dethroning the gaming superior. There's a lot more going on behind the scenes than I think you realise - the biggest reason, IMHO, newer PC titles run so well on such modest hardware has more to do with the bi-platform design of a lot of modern games. Console hardware can nowhere near match what the modern PC is capable of (and to be truthful, compared to PC hardware, console hardware has fallen into the "obsolete" category). But, because of the weaker hardware capabilities of consoles, games are developed around a certain amount of limitations. These titles run like melted butter on the PC, as the optimized display isn't really taxing a PC's hardware.

The problem is, really, that there aren't any game developers that are designing and developing primarily for the PC anymore, so the PC crowd has been left with a ton of "sloppy seconds." Even the gameplay just doesn't feel right. But, if there was to be a game designed to make fully use of a PC's potential, they'd have one helluva time porting it to any console, and the amount of features that would be cut would be astronomical. If anyone recalls some of the very early PC => console ports (i.e. Wolf3D for SNES, Doom for SNES, Duke3D for N64, DuneII/Command & Conquer for SEGA, etc.) graphics were horrible, weapons were removed, levels were trimmed down, and numeours other little features were removed . . . simply because the consoles of that era couldn't handle the demands of these titles. That was back when, no matter what your platform of choice, everyone recognized that if you really wanted to experience one of these ported titles properly, you had to try it on PC.

IMHO, as consoles become more and more like PCs, and as PC pricing and hardware pricing become cheaper and cheaper, I think we're going to start seeing a major resurgance of interest in the PC platform. We're on the brink of that now.

In the meantime, get off your console high-horse. Once you realize that the console industry is what's really holding the whole gaming market back, you might be willing to start whistling a different tune.

What's interesting about this article is that it's ammunition to use against the claim that piracy is too big of an albatross for PC game developers to overcome.

Mind you, while AAA games usually sell better on consoles (which makes Portal 2 stand out in that regard), the trend seems to more often than not reverse when it comes to indie games.

PC was never dying, Consoles just grew faster.
This. Its annoying when people say something is dying just because something *else* is growing faster. :p
agreed, the insane growth of tablet pc's has caused a great many people to believe they are the second coming of the computer age, when in fact they're just really useful and cheap, so people buy them.
( seriously, you can tablet-pc from about £70 now if you shop around )

that has to be the cheapest pc option?

#edit#
wow.. even cheaper than i thought.

still doesn't mean pc's are going to die just that tablets are useful tools

It's going be tough to get a slice of King Valve and Queen Blizzard's pie though... They and the casual gaming fad have pretty much stabbed the PC gaming crowd with their flag and have made a little pile topped with a throne out of the body count.

Good luck all ye who dare to climb it.

Like I have said many times about these silly comparisons, is that on steam Portal 2 was cheaper and had a hell of alot more fanfaire than console release.

It had that awesome Potatoe Arg across many games, and you didn't even have to goto a store to buy it.

So Cheaper, better fan service, and a slightly earlier launch.

Vs Paying more to stand in a line and be heckled by that special breed of asswipe that trolls game launches. Pennies were thrown near me from a speeding car on Halo Reach Night.
