Persona 5 Release Date Revealed

Persona 5 finally has an official Japanese release date of September 15, 2016.

Fans of Atlus's Persona series have been disappointed by the delays [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/142477-Persona-5-delay-and-TGS-trailer#&gid=gallery_4725&pid=1] surrounding its latest installment: Persona 5, but the good news is that the game now has a solid release date (at least in Japan). The game will launch on September 15, 2016, for the PS4.

The news was announced during a special livestream event on popular Japanese streaming service Nico2. It showed off a lot of new footage and features for the game, and you can check out a re-stream here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QGxvmDc1wU].

Also announced were 15 pieces of additional DLC for the game, consisting mostly of costumes and music. You can check them out below:

This game has really been a long time coming - it was announced back in 2013 and was originally slated for launch in late 2014. The first delay pushed it back to 2015, and the second one to 2016.

There is still no official western release date for the game, but Atlus previously confirmed that the game would come to North America [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138925-Persona-5-Coming-to-North-America-After-Japan] after its Japanese launch.

Guess I'll be owning a PS4 by September.
It's also coming out for PS3 if you have one. But I agree, Persona 5 is a good enough excuse to buy a new console.

So, when can I start buying the Collector's Edition again?

Other than that, I think I have a new waibando in the making... :p

Another delay...

Oh well. Plenty of other games to be playing while we wait for the, surely, 2017 ROW release. Final Fantasy XV, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Overwatch... Heck I can even get around to finally finishing Persona Q! Hurrah!

It is sad that the English-language version is coming out way after the Japanese one. But then again, simultaneous shipment is often disastrous for the localisation quality, as the translators have to deal with the product in the process of being developed and altered and edited which can lead to all sorts of problems. We might have to wait, but hopefully the result will be worth it.

I'm all about quality over quantity, but... Why are there so few SMT games coming out for consoles these days? During the PS2 era, we had one or two SMT-related titles coming out every year! And they were good! (Well, maybe Devil Dummoner was just 'decent', but still...)

Now we had a couple of handheld releases and a Persona game that has been delayed for two years already.

I wonder when (if) we'll get another SMT game the likes of SMT III: Nocturne on home consoles? I enjoyed the Persona games so far and I will be picking up this installment as well, but I'm not that big a fan of the 'anime J-pop teenage high school' feel. The Vortex World worked a bit better for me.

Also, I kind of miss the whole 'demon recruitment' aspect.

It's a mix of only 1 TV in Japanese houses and handheld's being more popular than consoles lately in Japan. Also Persona 3 pretty much saved Atlus so that's why they give it so much love.

And if you want classic MegaTen SMT4 and it's sequel SMT4:Apocalypse are for the 3DS. Apocalypse comes out later this year in the States.

I've learned my lesson from Persona 4. ONLY DATING ONE CHICK AT A TIME, NOW, THANK YOU ATLUS!

But yeah, nerdy chick getting my vote, my wallet and probably part of my shattered soul for my first playthrough.

SMT is great for the same reason that it will never have serious mainstream success. It's fucking weird. A game series drenched in the occult, where you use demons to kill God, may appeal to a certain subset of gamers, but it will never appeal to a mainstream audience. Me and Alpha Omega Sin may love it, but otherwise, no one in America cares.

And America is where the console market is at. In Japan the emphasis is on handhelds, because that's what sells. This could change, and we may see an increase in console games, but at the moment I'm not surprised that Atlus is only putting their biggest IP on consoles. Of course, this is the company that released Catherine on major consoles, and has always marched to the beat of their own drum, so who knows?

How on Earth am I going to finish this before FF XV comes out!? We could have used this during the damn drought. It's actually got me interested in Uncharted 4...freaking PS4 and it's tiny library.

Yeah, about that... I don't own a 3DS and I'm not planning to get one. Sadly, I'm really not into handhelds.

Really? Is it really more messed up than the stories of, say, FF VII or VIII? Or the Shadow Hearts titles?

And you know the gameplay is solid, 'cause Pok?mon copy/pasted it and made billions. Maybe it's the difficulty that scares people off, but that never stopped the Dark Souls franchise. And the whole 'killing God'-thing, come on, that hasn't been edgy since Garth Ennis did Preacher back in the 90s. Hell, push comes to shove, just do what FF VII did with Jehov- I mean, Jenova. Calamity from the skies, subtle.

Honestly, if I had to make a guess, I think it's the art style. Give SMT the same non-stoic Kazuma Kaneko style art you see on the Persona covers and you'll have all those mainstream anime fans flocking to it.

Hell, it's the only explenation I can think of why the likes of NIS, Gust, Compile Heart and Idea Factory are still in business...

It's true that killing God has basically become a JRPG cliche, but there's a huge difference between the colorful, light hearted antics of FF10, and SMT, where you can literally summon baphomet. Both may be criticizing aspects of Christianity, but one is a lot more blatant about it. FF10 comes across as more atheistic, whereas SMT dabbles in the satanic.

All I heard out of all of that was a release date. Everything else was a blur to me. Thanks, guys!
