I think the real issue isn't that PETA is protesting this game because of the huge list of reasons already posted.
The real issue is that PETA lacks even a single strategic thought in its collective head. Instead of protesting this game, they should of used it as a example of the horrible act still being perpetrated today which, be honest, most people don't realize. They could of supported informing people, maybe even convinced the devs to make the whale hunt more graphic so as to force people to think about it and make it a forefront issue. Instead they continue to piss in the wind and achieve nothing except making themselves look stupid and smell bad.

I find it humorous that PETA will snap over a game we know very little about yet, but may contain whaling in some small form, while Dishonored, a game where the entire world's economy and energy needs are monopolized through the whaling industry, and they don't give a hoot.

Yeah, way to go, PETA.

Who wants to bet they're jumping on this bandwagon to save nonexistent face over letting Dishonored slip by unscathed?

I'm confused. Does Assassin's Creed feature whaling? Did they say in an interview that it would be in the game?
Because all I see is a screenshot of a whale. Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see the harpoon or anything. Could someone say where it is?

Also, for those who have not seen it, Moviebob's take on PETA is quite entertaining. Not for the faint of heart though.

Furthermore, Dishonored, a stealth-action FPS released last year, featured whale oil as the main resource of the game, yet was able to avoid the ire of PETA.

Yeah, about those whales in Dishonored- they're not whales as we know them. They have tentacles.

[link]http://dishonored.wikia.com/wiki/Whale_Vivesection[/link]

The use of their bones to create magical effects and the unparalleled ability of their oil to be used as an all-purpose energy source makes this even clearer, as does the Heart making reference to "Deep Ones". We never actually see a whale in the game, as far as I'm aware, but the references seem to suggest that they're something between Earthly whales and some kind of Lovecraftian abomination.

To be clear- I'm not saying PETA is making such a distinction in failing to single it out; it's probably that they flat-out missed it. Like virtually everyone else, I find PETA's theatrics laughable at best. But it might be well for us to be aware of just how firmly Dishonored's whales are completely fictional and even fantastic creatures.

PETA is not only an organization that wastes time, breath and money, but to anyone who actually cares about animals, they're pretty evil too. I forget the actual percentage, but they kill nearly 90% of the animals they "rescue".

They got on to this? and still havent said anything about Far Cry 3?
PETA is only interested in bleeding heart cases, I don't think anyone really cares if your murdering giant predatory animals that you can't hug.

Defending those that can't defend themselves and all that.

This story just makes me hate armchair protest movements all the more. Greenpeace gets out there and tries to fight this issue, Peta on the other hand just rages at a video game instead.

Yeah I've heard that as well there shelters kill rate is much higher than state/local pounds.

Or Far Cry 3.

Shark hunting with grenades and tiger hunting with assault rifles, that brings back memories.
Another FC 3 post, i've been wondering, is the game THAT good? Because I wouldn't mind picking it up.
I enjoyed it immensely. It's story is decent, better than most FPS's nowadays, but it's a bit all over the place. The gameplay is amazing though, and in the second half you get a wingsuit that allows you to jump off almost any high surface and glide. I can highly recommend it.

How come they're giving Assassin's Creed a hard time when Far Cry 3 had a whole mechanic dedicated to killing everything on the island and skinning them and they didn't say a damn word about that?

It's called historical accuracy. If you don't want to hunt virtual whales just stay away from that part of the game.

Now this this is a Peta I could get behind, if you know what I mean.

Edit: In assassins creed 3 I stabbed several bears in the face. If PETA thinks this is worse they are animal racists.

It didn't cross anyone's mind that now that ubi has gone over to Origin and by proxy EA that EA wouldn't pull the same "protest us" nonsense that they (and some entities in this industry) have pulled in the past?

Assassin's Creed isn't supporting whaling, it's inserting historical accuracy into its story. PETA are attention whoring idiots. That is all.

I thought it said PETA protests against Wales. I was all, "at last, something I can get behind".
I lolled.

But then you would be pro Wales-ing? (Welshing? Welsh hunting?)

It's not like they are an endangered species or anything.

They have their own natural preserve where they can roam.

Outside that, it's open season.

What PETA don't seem to realise is that humans are animals as well... and this is a game which Quite Literally Glorifies the Killing of Humans! It is about Assassins.
I wouldn't say they glorify it. In the context of the story that doesn't make sense
Much of the inner conflict the main characters face is struggling with the ideal of being an assassin. I think Ezio said it best near the end of Embers:
"The life of an assassin is pain, Jun. You suffer it, you inflict it, you watch it happen in the hope that you can make it disappear in time. A terrible irony...."
I know I may be nitpicking, but I want to clarify that point. It's important to the story.

OT: Just Peta being Peta again. Best ignore them.

Im just waiting for the inevitable game they are going to make about it, imagine Whales Creed: Revenge of the Sea Mammals. Some of there games have been entertaining though I general cant stand the dialogue as it is painful to read.

Simple Really, The AC series has more steam than D or FC3. They protest a series that is more well known to get attention, they did it with WAW.
