I do hope this happens. Superb idea, silly name. Lose that name, Make that game. Godus isus notus a properus nameus for a gameus. It's like Monty Python on Benzedrine. Not very inspired.

We never stopped playing the original two Populous titles, we only paused playing it when the hardware died - no matter how many times we've had to solder and resolder those homemade Amiga serial 'network' cables.

If the young players only know the later works of Microsoft Borg Molyneyx, it's a real shame. Populous was and is amazing and inspiring, as is Syndicate and - to a lesser extent - Powermongo, Populous' juicing idiot cousin.

I enjoyed making a smelly satanic demon cow in Black & White, but I eventually lost all interest in the game. I never enjoyed any Populous title after 2. I finished and enjoyed the first Fable, whatever followed after that is lost in a haze of broken promises and pink fluffy clouds of sales pitch marketing talk and dreamy mumbo jumbo crazy talk... and some very, very odd gameplay experiences that weren't plain broken but... quite different, annoying and weird.

Populous really was fantastic. I just really think Molyneux has lost whatever it is he had back then.
I don't think that he ever had it, really.

Many of these classic legendary developers, like Molyneux, Will Wright, Sid Meyer, John Carmack, etc, were never particlarly talented either about understanding what gamers want, or about designing a good program, but when computers and gaming were still new, they just happened to be the first ones to come up with basic self-evident genre ideas, that others would have soon came up with anyways.
Hm... don't know very well how to respond to that. Carmack is not even a game designer, he's a programmer. Most people who know something about programming know he is an insanely good programmer. I don't know why you dismiss Wil Wright and Sid Meyer so quickly, maybe you don't know much about them? Anyway, I don't think belittling what these people did in the past as "obvious" is really wise and may show some degree of ignorance of the history of the medium.

The case with Molyneux may be a little different. I think it's possible he was so good in the old days because he worked in more constrained environments in terms of time and budget. He didn't have corporate henchmen saying how he had to widen the audience of his games, but he had a small company that wouldn't survive if they didn't finish the games in a certain timeframe, so he messed less with the basic ideas. What I read from people who worked with him is that he tends to change his mind a lot, forcing others in the team to scrap previous work frequently. But he does have a lot of good, inventive ideas.

OT: I played tens of hours of Populous in the old days. I loved going for the Armageddon. I may pledge to this just to see if he can recreate something as good as it was before.

So is this the "one game" his studio is making, or is it another "experiment."

Snark aside, this actually sounds pretty cool. Enjoyed Populous, would love for a remake of it to happen.
I also did and would, but I have to ask - what the heck is somebody as successful and well-known as Molyneux using Kickstarter for? Can't he get backers in any other way? A lot of people in the comments are sceptical of this, and I have to echo them... it's a pretty bizarre decision.

Maybe he's just gauging the response first. Finding out much people are actually willing to pay before he makes it. The thing is if you simply ask people plenty will say yes and then never actually buy it. Either that or [tinfoilhat] he's trying to steal everyones money before he retires.

I admittedly chuckled a tad at Peter getting carried away with the number of players he wanted in battles and his level headed director repeating "8" over and over again.

Didn't realised 22 Cans was working out of Guildford as well though, just down the road from me!

He's the George Lucas of gaming.

Only thing that makes me sad about this is that Maia probably isn't going to get funded now :/

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1438429768/maia

Seriously this has got to be one of the more interesting projects on kickstarter right now and heavily related.

Jeez Molyneux- leave Kickstarter to those that actually need the damn thing.
I'm surprised this sentiment hasn't gained more traction.

It have 3 days left but the Molineux Proyect is for December 21, so one can fund Maia FIRST and then gather money for Godus. Since Maia is Dungeon Keeper + Dwarf Fortress + Theme Hospital i would say that my hopes are on that game and not Godus. The game needs 16K more to meet the deadline, if we can get the same miracle that happened to Tim Schafer when he got almost a million in 2 days then Maia could make it alive.
