Peter Moore Says EA Sports Is Built Upon Innovation

EA Sports [http://www.easports.com/]President Peter Moore says the belief that EA Sports titles lack innovation is "one of the biggest misconceptions in the entire industry."

Speaking in an interview with Electronic Arts [http://www.gamedaily.com/games/madden-nfl-08/psp/game-features/meet-the-ea-label-presidents-peter-moore/6587/71293/?biz=], said he did so because the company has "innovated and been a leader for decades."

"EA created a genre with the EA Sports brand," he continued, "and when you look at how we established and then have consistently innovated in the sports category, it's obvious that EA Sports has not ridden the wave; we've driven the wave."

"Our games have become more and more complicated and complex, and we often get dogged for one of the biggest misconceptions in the entire industry - a lack of innovation year in and year out on annually iterated titles," Moore said. "I bristle at time when I hear this, because nothing could be further from the truth."

"Gameplay innovation will always be the bedrock upon which our brand is built. Our mission is to consistently make EA Sports games not only the most authentic, but also the most innovative games on the market."

EA Sports recently released Madden NFL 2008, the 18th entry in the franchise [http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/madden-series]which first launched in 1988 for the Commodore 64, Apple II and DOS.

Back in the days of playing sports titles on the nes I will say I thought it was pretty new and cool idea... but they haven't changed at all since then.

At least EA is getting its money's worth out of Peter Moore. It's just like the old days where you could take out "EA Sports" and plug "Microsoft" back into the title.

I remember hearing, "It takes balls to make a bold faced lie in the spotlight."

I find it pretty appropriate here.

I think I've used that "18th entry in the Madden NFL franchise" bit in every EA Sports post I've never made, and I'm still not tired of it. Not even close.

"Gameplay innovation will always be the bedrock upon which our brand is built."

He must be counting past innovations as well. As in, gameplay innovations from many years past will always be the bedrock that we copy from. So technically, he's not lying.

On the other hand, I think it's rather unfair to expect perpetual gameplay innovation from year to year in a sports franchise. Consider, how many rule changes has the NFL made in the 18 years since Madden I? At some point they've got to hit an optimal mechanics suite for a given style of sports game (team management, action gameplay sim), at which point, all you need are roster updates.

One game should not try to meet all sports game styles, and likewise, changes to game mechanics shouldn't be done for the sake change alone. Now, you can argue as to whether Madden, et al, have reached their optimal mechanics suite, but I think the idea that there actually is an optimum, past which innovation is unnecessary, is something that should be recognized.

Moore's conversion happened rather fast. He's talking like he's been married with EA for a hundred years.
