piracy, does it have a good solution?

Recently I found out that starcraft 2 wont be having LAN battles anymore. Blizzard or some other guy said that they are doing this to stop piracy. Nowadays piracy is a threat to game producers. I heard that 70% or more players in the first week of Demigod were using pirated copies of the game. I personally think that piracy is bad, buying the original copies might convince the producers to make another game/movie. I also heard that EA has limited the times you can install a game on your PC to prevent piracy. But EA's solution may be annoying to some players since some of us may un-install and re-install games to save space.

Now I bet lots of people here have GOOD solutions to this problem. Post whatever you think is the best solution to this problem. I am doing this out of curiosity and someday maybe a developer would use these ideas to stop piracy.

P.S. how is this bad?
P.P.S don't go out of topic please....

I'll buy games if i feel they are worth my money.
If i do not, i'll pirate them.
Sometimes i'll pirate them, not because i lack the money, but for the convenience.
Games developers need to understand this.

I think a good way to solve it is to include something extra when you buy the game new. For instance say you walk into walmart and buy gears of war 2, inside is a code that gives you a normally $10 DLC download for free. If the code only works once then whoever bought the game is going to use it. It just adds a little more incentive to not pirate a game or buy it used. Of course their are always the people who don't give a shit and will go ahead and pirate it anyway, but those people will be getting games for free at the expense of the developer no matter what.

Have a look at the recent Experienced Points article on this. Covers it rather well.

My suggestion: release everything on Steam, or a Steam-like service. And make Steam accept my copy of Fallout 3 and Bioshock. And let me gift all spare games to people. I have spare copies of The Path and World of Goo, money WASTED!

Aww I thought this was about actual pirates to which I was going to say, "who needs a solution" but to game piracy??? hmmm ... Game piracy only hurts the industry which hurts their game quality which hurts us which hurts tehm and the cycle continues ... luckily retro gamers will be very pleased as any new games will have retro graphics!!!!

OT: There is no solution except to make everyone incredibly nice so that people don't need money, they only do work to contribute to others.

I think they should arrest those who commit piracy and put them to death unless they wear an eyepatch, a hat and a parrot on their shoulder and sail round on a big ship going "Arrrr!".
I think some swashbuckling is in order then.
Have at you sir!

IMO piracy can be a good thing if everyone just pirated games like 'the sims' they'd go broke and no more sims would be mad. Job well done :D But I guess as you say it is quite a serious issue and if we buy our products we can get more games/movies for games. But do we really want this? I mean don't you get tired of having to play the same game over and over? Even though they're supposively 'new' if we continue pirating it will force the companies to produce better games so more people are willing to buy them, it seems illogical but I reckon it'll work. BTW I personally don't pirate unless I know it will be a shit house game

In other words. You are a thief.

You can try and justify it with whatever bullshit reasons you like but you are taking something for free that cost somebody else money to make. Even if you didn't "take it" and "copied" it you are still stealing because you didn't pay for the rights to use it.

It is also not necessary to post about six times without contributing anything.

The solution to piracy is simple.
Get Captain Mr Wilson, most dreaded pirate of all the seas to go after the other pirates.
Then get Captain Mr Wilson to go after all implementations of DRM, online activation and all other anticopy protection, it won't be needed there wont be any pirates. Then we dress up like pirates and sing the pirate song.

Now accepting suggestions for the pirate song.
