Plants Vs. Zombies Best iPhone Launch Ever

In the 9 days it's been out, Plants Vs. Zombies [http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plants-vs-zombies/id350642635?mt=8] has sold over 300 thousand copies on Apple's App Store.

Last week, we reported that the vegetation and undead simulator was available on Apple's App Store [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98321-Plants-Vs-Zombies-Available-For-iPhone]. Since it was released on February 15th, the clever little game from Popcap has sold over 300,000 copies. That makes it the fastest selling application (of any kind, not just games) on the App Store, at least according to Popcap. Of course, because the game retails for $2.99, it's only made around $1 million but that's hardly something to cough at for what's basically a port.

Popcap is the undisputed king of casual games on the iPhone platform, with Bejeweled being the first non-free application to move over 3 million units. Including Peggle, the company has 3 games that have reached #1 on Apple's top grossing list and have 5 games in the top 100 (Bookworm and Chuzzle).

Popcap is fully endorsing Apple as a platform for its brand of fun and simple games. "Plants vs. Zombies is our latest major franchise to make the jump to iPhone, and from the early customer and critical feedback it appears to be a great adaptation of the game," said Andrew Stein from PopCap. "There's always a concern when bringing a computer game to a mobile, pocket-sized device that something will get lost in the process, but in this case the overwhelming consensus is that Plants vs. Zombies is even more fun on the smaller touch screen!"

I don't know if that last sentiment is true, I don't own an iPhone and probably never will, but part of me wants to call bullsh*t. Can a game really become more fun when it is shrunk down and limited by a touch interface?

Maybe because you really feel you have green-fingers? In both senses of the phrase.

I can certainly see how a touch screen would give it that little extra immersion. Can you imagine the fun of cherry-bombing on a touchscreen?

"There's a Zombie on your la-" NO! I was already addicted enough to it on PC, I don't need to become enslaved to it again.

*Sigh*... Stuck an awesome game... Though I suspect weed had something to do with it's conception.

I hate zombies. From their truely grotesque appearence to the fact that they were once human too; I can't stand the things. My classmate in German (2) appears to be addicted to this odd game (as well as like, thousands of other people). I don't see the point of yet another tower defence game that have been "sprouting" up over the internet like things that sprout up...

Popcap... for the LOVE OF GOD, make a PSP port of the game. I own it on the PC already but need to be able to take my digital crack whenever I'm out and about.

I don't know about calling it 'better' on the iphone, but it's definitely easier to play, while still being just as fun. The small screen and touch interface lets you very quickly click a plant with your left thumb and plant it with a right finger, or some such combination. You can easily collect sun and coins with a roll of your fingers across the screen and it just makes it interestingly different enough to be fun yet again on another platform. The only thing I do NOT like about it is the fact that, being so small, a lot of the adorable details are hard to pick out and the music is only listenable through headphones. I love the music.

OH, and they added an achievement screen which is quite amusing. So that's a bonus.
All for $3 I have to agree this is one of the best things I've got for my Touch.
