Glad I didn't buy into LOTRO's lifetime. I barely survived 6 months of that game. What a big loss of money that would've been.

Same with Champions. Its a good idea if you're planning on going the long haul, but doing so sight unseen? Scary proposition.

I don't understand why anyone would PREORDER a lifetime subscription. If the game turns out to be ass then you get screwed. I can imagine it would be good if you're planning to make up the time that you payed for.

Seeing as you've played it, even for a short period of time, would you think its worth the 200 quid?
I may or may not have played it. Sorry, NDA.

I play WoW for FREE LEGALLY, agreement witha friend but I rarely play it, for a fact I've played Farcry 2 (which in my opinion is kinda boring because of the driving) more than it... For 200 bucks I can buy oblivion goty, fallout 3 + all expansions AND Valve complete pack and still have money left over. Thats a lot of play time I might add
Yeah, right, Blizzard is giving the game for free to your friend... Not. He still pays for it.

Think about it - for $200, you would be able to play for... 50 months? That's 4 bucks a month.

Yeah, but it wasn't a true MMO to begin with. It was like Guild Wars, but with a hell lot less content and barely any PvP. I wouldn't have paid a dime for it.

It's sorta like putting the full price of a car down on the table when you buy, or doing the common thing (for people who don't have tens of thousands of dollars on hand) and doing a payment scheme and interest.

Only, at this early point, you're not allowed to drive the car yet. Or touch it. You can look at photos of the car and feature specs, but otherwise, it might as well be ether.

I guess the question here is: Is $200 worth beta access to Star Trek Online

I'd seriously consider this if Blizzard announced a 'lifetime subscription' similar to this, but for now, I think I'm going to wait and see how Champions Online turns out before forking over that much money for it.

Note the bolded, underlined and italicized bit to counter your first sentence, as for the second I dont believe you play ONLY Champions Online for four years.. Same counts for people who say WoW is so cheap because they pay 15 bucks per month whereas other people in their opinion pay 60 bucks every month for new games, this is easily countered because people often buy older games and they have games themselves which they dust off every once in a while.

Not to mention there are people who put more time in a game like Oblivion or Fallout 3 and those games are like not even 30 bucks a piece..

I'm thinking the use of the word lifetime is wrong

they're bound to shut the game down eventually :p

Oh, just to show you people, lifetime subscription isn't just one thing. You also get some nice bonuses and access to all Star Trek Online betas.

Not mentioned in the OP.

Damn you ninja'd my joke :(.

I was gonna say "I know I don't regret getting it for my Hellgate London."

I didn't do that but it would have gotten the point across.

Oh well...early bird gets the post.

If you buy lots of shit just get their Credit Card. If it still exists I believe you get time just by buying stuff with it (just pay the card off the moment you have money on it).

I wouldnt go for this, on the simple basis there are games like the Elder Scrolls series and Sacred series. Much more fun in my opinion and no monthly fees. And noone wants to bother for PvP which I can't stand anyway. Guild Wars is a great game that has been going strong for numerous years without fees, and then there is the one that is consistently compared WoW. WoW charges fees and has a lot going for it because they have so many subscribers... if they didnt have the number of players on at a time that they do, there wouldnt be so much work and costs involved, and they might be able to do something along this line. Every company wants to beat WoW as it sets the bar, although I see nothing special to it, and frankly I am just tired of it. However, the 6 month setup for sixty bucks is a nice deal, as it is discounted, its the cost of a game, and few games, console or pc, online or not, dont recieve 6 months of interest. So to get the special stuffs and the time ordered, without loss... good deal.

Thats not the point...

Point is...what happens to those who paid a "lifetime subscription" only to see the servers shutdown later?

Poof. But then again, Cryptic's first game is still active and it still runs.

Yeah, my mind went to Hellgate: London too. That said, I don't see Cryptic getting into anywhere near the issues Flagship did. They've got a good track record. If you like COH and/or are a Champions fan, then this is probably a safe enough investment.

I'm tempted by this as I enjoyed City of Heroes. However, the main problem with CoH was it got very repetative after a while (moreso then LOTR & WoW). I'll probably end up buying on release and if its good, I'll fork out for a lifetime sub.

Except I think that the lifetime sub is a limited time offer for pre-orders. I could be wrong though. So it's $200 for a leap of faith.

Still, Turbine saw some success with this, and honestly Cryptic's other game they originally developed, City of Heroes, is still going. It isn't that bad of a bet to make, though like you, I quit CoX because it was terribly repetitive and didn't offer much of an experience besides the Team Force missions and PvP.

Damn, your right. Seeing as I need a new MMORPG to substitute for WoW, I've now pre-ordered this which also means you get to try the beta and you get 3 days before the cut off date of the 1st so I may still go for it.
