Play the Last Samurai in Shogun 2 Expansion

Fall of the Samurai is a "standalone expansion" meaning you don't need the original to play.

Based on the satisfying blend of strategy and setting sooner [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/8736-Total-War-Shogun-2-Review]. It appears that Creative Assembly - the UK-based house behind the Total War brand - have not been idle since the game's release in March, announcing a standalone expansion that advances Shogun 2's technology and politics to the mid 19th century. New units wielding better guns, steam-powered ships and the first railways seen in a Total War game are just some of the features that I'll be jonesing to dive into - whenever Creative Assembly gets around to announcing a release date.

"Fall of the Samurai explores the conflict between the Imperial throne and the last Shogunate in 19th century Japan, 400 years after the events of the original game," reads the announcement, promising "a dramatic clash of traditional Samurai culture with the explosive power of modern weaponry."

The standalone expansion features a new map that updates islands of Japan to the new era of 1864 and adds a new island - Ezo - to the north, expanding the scope of the game. You'll also have six new clans to choose like those supporting the Shogunate (Aizu, Nagaoka, Jozai) or the Imperial clans (Choshu, Satsuma, Tosa).

Shogun 2 already offered some gameplay centered around European influence on Japanese clans, but Fall of the Samurai revels in it. There are 39 new land units like the gatling gun and the Armstrong gun, and you will also be able to recruit units directly from the British Royal Marines, US Marine Corps and French Marines. Railroads will also figure prominently as building or capturing them will allow you to move troops and agents quickly across the island.

The most interesting addition - at least to me - are the interactions between naval and land units. New ironclad ships will be able to support ground troops with artillery barrages and the new port siege battle will have cannons firing on attacking ships. The opportunities for interaction between land and sea units is just what the game needed; I often felt like the two different modes needed to feel more connected.

As if that weren't enough, there will be new agents - the Foreign Veteran, the Ishin Shishi and the Shinshengumi - and updated trees for the Ninja and Geisha, as well as new multiplayer options.

There's no word on what the price for all this content will be, but it looks like Creative Assembly are pulling no punches with The Fall of the Samurai. If it ends up being priced less than a full PC title, then playing it will be nothing less than the plundering of Japanese culture by the West.

Yes! Finally I can replay 'the last samurai'. Let the battles begin. Eventually, that is.

*Waits for release date announcement*

Ah, fuck it. I'm going back to Skyrim.

This honestly sounds a lot more interesting than Shogun 2 itself. I'm a huge fan of the Total War series, but I gave Shogun 2 a pass until it drops significantly in price because I simply found the setting to not be my thing at all. This however acually sounds like fun.

Wow.
This might actually pull me away from Skyrim and back to the equally excellent Shogun.

No. Just no. i'm not getting this. Becuase it will ruin multiplayer even further. i got Shogun 2 when it first came out, and it was great for a while. The campaigns were challenging and fun and multiplayer was played with some manners and tactics. And then people realised how powerfull matchlocks were and stopped using anything else. it took months for CA to patch it so that spammers would use something else. And yes, while part of the problem is that people look for exploits the other half of the problem is that CA gives them so many things to exploit! This is going to be like heavy gunners all over again! seriously, what were they thinking? hand cannons? WHY?! This will be like an entire expansion of heavy gunners... It is going to suck. All tactics will be removed from multiplayer games. It will be douchebags with rows of guns and cannons against poor bastards with a sense of honor. as appropriate as that may be, it kills the mutliplayer aspect. i hate to see this happen to such a great game.

Its stand alone...

All of what you just said is invalid xD

Also judging by the fact swords VS guns will be a very common feature the hardy nature of men will likely be vastly improved. If you watch the film The Last Samurai you'll see guns don't always win... unless you just have fucking thousands more xD
Shoguns great multiplayer will be left untouched while a new one will exist.

-------------------------------------------------------

Yey, it looks as if Shogun will be getting its very own Napoleon xD (Joke, Shogun was no Empire >.>)

I do look forward to this though... it seems like CA are getting ever closer to that era they dared not before... the world wars. They are edging there steadily but slowly, now with proper ironclad ships and rail ways.

Historically, this is exactly what happened, though. The Meiji era was very unforgiving to the old ways.

Perhaps if we kept to the earlier parts of the feudal era, it wouldn't be so much of an issue, but then there wouldn't really be any logical end product of the tech tree.

I always enjoy watching 2 styles of fighting clash, the old way of the east vs the new way of the west. Likely it will be like in Empire the gun troops vs the melee troops. Once in a melee, the gun guys get their butts kicked assuming the melee guys survive the onslaught.

I'm partially in agreement, but only partially. As good as Rome: TW was, and it was very good, I think they should go for another era or region. Dancing around the three eras for the next few years will just make it stagnate for me.

OT: I'm looking forawrd to this, I got the rise of the samurai pack and it opened up a whole new aspect of strategy. The units may be shit and look.....weird, but thats all part of the fun.
