Playing a most underrepresented group in Gaming

Just been around another website where people discussed the statement of Epic's Chris Perna, about how women as playable characters are a hard sell to publishers and also how having attractive, stereotypical women in games has become a cliche by itself.

I've been thinking and come to the conclusion:

I really want to have a game where the protagonist is a middle-aged person

As rare as female protagonists are in gaming, having a person between 40 and 59 be the main character is as far as i know practically unheard of. Sure, there are exceptions, like in Heavy Rain or Max Payne, and some games with character editors allow to have your Shepard/Courier/CursedUndead look older.
But that's the thing: I'm not really interested in an older protagonist in terms of gameplay (As far as i know, Solid Snake has to deal with back pains in MGS4...don't really want or need that), but in terms of writing.
I mean, just look at the characters that people like Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis or Liam Neeson play nowadays, these people still can be action guys while at the same time are able to give thier characters a believable sense of experience, professionalism and even weariness that's harder to sell with a young guy (...i'm especially starting to get annoyed with japanese writing here, where you get world-weary, semi-traumatised, emotionally withdrawn war veterans that look like they are barely above 30).

I want characters who aren't newcomers in thier field, who are well established and known. I want characters who are MARRIED and have children and maybe a husband or wife to a police protagonist urging him/her to finally get a desk job. I want to play a 45 year old woman who can order younger ones around and depending on my dialogue choices, can come off like an old, bossy hag.

I am aware that this age group is underrepresented for a reason (After all, 50 year old gamers are hardly a majority, even less so when it comes to games with narratives), but one can still dream. It'd think older men and women would make interesting protagonists in gaming and could bring something new to the table.

It's more a matter of identification. It's much easier for us gamers to identify with younger people than older people. You are right, but for adults to be accurately represented in gaming, it needs to be done well.

What about John Marston from RDR? His age was not defined (although probably a bit under 40) and he's married.

It's a good start, but it's not really much until the end. Also, Marston is a complete idiot thanks to the Rockstar Rules of Game Writing (tm) that requires the protagonist to be everyone's errand boy, wich was especially pointless in RDR.

Wich is said, because currently GTA V is my best hope to be getting something like that, since at least 1/3 of the protagonists seems to be a middle aged guy with a family and a sort-of sorted out life.

And, again, not saying it hasn't been done (see my examples above, or the Kane & Lynch Series), but still i'd like to see more of that, with the writing actually doing an effort to portray how a person of a certain age might handle things differently.

My Dream Game in this respect would have a protagonist similar to Frances McDormand in Fargo or the Characters CCH Pounder usually plays ^^

I didn't play Nier, but from what I've heard, that guy fits the bill.
Here's a quote from a review.

The protagonist (technically named Nier, although there is no default name and players must make that choice) is a dedicated father trying to cure his daughter of a startling disease, The Black Scrawl, which causes writhing black letters to appear on its victims. The story becomes much more complex ? in fact, it is never simple ? without falling into that spiral of madness and floating castles and world-saving nonsense that most JRPGs inevitably fall into before they end.

Why can't we play as a gun? Seriously, we've used guns, we've controlled guns, we've placed guns, and by extension we kind of played as a gun, but we've never been a gun. I want to hear what the gun thinks about all that's going on, what kind of psychological damage our trusty pistol could be taking after all those upgrades we've forced on him/her.

Actually, in shooters with silent protagonists, we're technically playing as a gun.

Also, we need more insect protagonists. There really only represented in puzzle games.

Fuck I'm tired, good night.

Most Zelda games have Link as left handed. The only exception I can think of is Skyward Sword.

Link's also right-handed in the Wii version of Twilight Princess(still left-handed in the GC version). Which wouldn't particularly bother me if it wasn't for the fact that I played the Gamecube version first. They not only flipped Link's model, but they flipped the entire game world, for whatever ungodly reason. I'll just say that I was so used to the GC version, I couldn't even navigate Ordon Village. X____________X

The oldest character I can recall as of yet is Sam Gideon in Vanquish. He isn't like, 45-50 years old, but he's 36 which definitely isn't as young as all these new protags.

Joel from The Last of Us Is supposed to be in his 40's.

Lee in The Walking Dead is 37, is married and has to look after a little girl throughout the game.

I think we're slowly starting to see more diversity, at least age-wise, but I would definitely like to see more.
