This has GOT to be a joke.

This is the dumbest thing I've heard about video games since someone said that Columbine was inspired by Doom!

I mean, video games compared to crack?
That's like comparing a Walrus to a Brick! The only similarities is that they're both made up of atoms! Have you ever tried snorting a cartridge before? What about smoking a CD?

and then there's this bit:

Even professional athletes are struggling with the negative affects of gaming addiction. "Many footballers are playing on hand-held consoles and computer games before a game and this is resulting in a natural high which is causing a chemical imbalance which is leading to them not performing their best on the pitch," Pope explained. "I am the psychotherapist for Fleetwood Town and they ban their players from using any form of console for at least 24 hours before a game."
What the duce.

"Chemical Imbalance?" "Not performing their best?"

Perhaps it's due to a psychotic psychoanalyst in their town?

And, Mr. Pope, what proof do you have of this so-called "High" that is obtained by playing video games? Granted, after playing a few hours of Fallout 3, I do feel pretty good, but that's because I just halved the local Super Mutant Population, not because of some bizzaro psychological affect.

"I saw one 14-year-old Preston boy who played on games for 24 hours non-stop and had not eaten and was showing signs of dehydration. When his parents tried to take his console away, he became aggressive and threatened to jump out of a window," he continued. "Computer game addiction can also spiral into violence as after playing violent games, they may turn their fantasy games into reality."

For the love of Pete! That was isolated!!! It's not like all gamers are slavering maniacs who live for their next moment of Alan Wake or whatever.

And AGAIN with the violent video games argument: Unless there can be some proof produced of this...
[HEADING=1] STOP USING IT TO "VALIDATE" WHY GAMING IS BAD FOR US! [/HEADING]

If people say video games are bad for us, the could at least try it first! Good god!

Anything that gives positive feedback (including pleasure in gaming) can be compared to "snorting crack." The same neurological mechanisms are at work, and the same problems can arise if one becomes addicted to the stimulation they receive from the activity.

Food, sex, drugs, speed, shoplifting, or what have you, abuse of these all the same fundamental failing of human psychology that cannot be attributed to the substance or subject, but only our reactions to it and our inability to manage them.

Everything in life is bad for you... When are people going to get this in their heads?

People can get addicted to anything. And maybe playing video games can be the same as doing a line of coke .. to some people. But we're all different, with different tolerances, responsibilities, and thresholds.

The problem, I think, is focusing on the substance instead of the person. Why did this person start doing drugs? What is this person trying to escape from by playing video games? <-- very bare-bones examples. That needs to be the focus, instead of just blaming something outright.

And just in case; no, I do not think video games are inherently addictive. It all depends on the person holding the controller.

So he's treating everyone's addictions it seems? Hell, I'm quite addicted to Subway, running, and Ice Cream soda. that's like 3 times the lethal limit of cocaine according to this guy. Just because you can scare people, doesn't make you an expert.

There's a direct correlation to obesity and video games? Same with watching TV then. And a desk job.

Oh, and eating too fucking much.

I think that therapist was eating a box of Lucky Charms (while he was a plumber) and discovered a cut-out psychology degree. He was like "om-gizl" and here we are.

Don't listen to the LEP, I live in Lancashire and it's a load of crap.

And it's not the games fault it's packed with addictive goodness!

In the article it is actually three out of five but I guess statistics means nothing so we can throw em around, right?

Since he's a therapist I'm inclined not to care what he thinks. It's been obvious for years that little kids shouldn't be allowed to play video games...I trust cats to play games more than young kids.
