Man, oh man. My PS2 has been there for me through the greatest of gaming times and I can't think of any other console that has not only been reliable, but also had the ability to play such games as Legend of Mana, Final Fantasy Tactics, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Timesplitters, Legend of Dragoon and Grandia. Such awesome times.

Speaking of Grandia...

Rest well, my friend. You shall not be forgotten.
I love you for this. Manly tears were shed.
That song ranks up there with "Death of Optimus Prime" and other songs that're difficult NOT to cry as you listen to them. Had to include it for this news.

Also, you're very welcome!

out of your list there is 1 game that i liked, and evne that i played on PC. and i like SONY. so whats up with that?
i guess 13 years is a long enough time to write off a console. i wrote off my PC after 9 when it comes to gaming (although occasional return fire match with a friend is fun). Now could this be a sign that SONY is preparing for PS4?
Well I loved them all.

Even though many of those weren't PS2 exclusives, I first played them on PS2.

You may have written of your old PC but you replaced it with another PC. PC is still alive.

No one cried for the end of PS1 as PS2 continued what was good with PS1 including backwards compatibility.

But it's all over now, PS3 like 360 and WiiU are different breeds of a new kind of console gaming that has so many of the downsides of PC gaming and few of the upsides.

I'm thinking of getting a new PS2, I already own the fat/slim, and keeping it boxed up just in case my older consoles ever die I'll have a back-up.

The PS2 is to the 3D gen what the SNES was to the 2D gen.
The greatest of the greatest of the greatest..
There we go, fixed for you. No need to thank me XD

The PS2 is the greatest console ever created. I worship it on my knees every day and I kiss it's controller for good luck every morning. It sits at the head of my table when I eat and I throw the most extravagant parties when I celebrate the day I got it. It is my beginning and my end. I owe everything I have to it and it gives me the greatest pleasure ever. I sleep with it by my side every night and I don't feel safe without. I love my PS2 an I would go to hell and back for it.
That is what you meant to say right? I mean I'm sure you meant to exclaim your love for it even more but you had to be careful of being too descriptive.

OT: Man the PS2 was great. I had so many good times with it' games. Playing with my friends in the same room as we chowed down on cookies and pop and fought over who got the good controller. Ah good times. I guess I should go pick one up just in case my current one ever checks out. Still ten years and counting and it is still going strong.

No? Not working? Hmm, this strand is getting way too heated. Quick send in Jimmy Carter to do his comedy break dancing routine:

Ah, what a President. He earned his Nobel Peace Prize.

i think you put it very nicely there (bolded part).
i guess we got different tastes, thats not bad. and PC is still alive, but its taking a beating from all sides now, and while PC does have a lot of backward compatibility, not as much as one wants sometimes. Yes the new consoles are a new breed, but the new PCS that (will be) runing win 8, androids and ioses are a new breed too. sometimes old things have to let the new ones in, even if they were good. times change and sometimes we do have let go.

The last console to be sold without premium DLC...

...See you in another life, PS2.
I think you win the thread already. Laughing and tearing up a little at the same time!!!

But as great as those games are, for me, things keep getting better. Better graphics, better game play. I still have 2 newer slims of these for vacations. Easy to transport, play on, and I still have a dozen games for it. Dunno if I'd trust transporting a PS3. Bigger, bulkier, might be more delicate.

Japan discontinuing the PS2 is some sad news, as literal and as symbolic of its demise as you can get.
It's remained my trusty gaming console for years now. I've hoarded sixty-plus titles on it and keep buying to this very date. I have a long way before I play through all of them, too. Especially since I like to replay my favorites - for the fun, for the challenge, for the memories, for the hell of it.

I'm sure though that a lot of us will keep gaming on the PS2. I know I will. Life goes on at one pace, we go on at another.

My PS3 died after about four years and left me without my favorite game system for about a month... so I plugged in old PS2 slim and started the nostalgia trip.

What followed was essentially a video game time travel adventure.

It eventually ended with me playing Final Fantasy 6.... >.<

The PS2 was, by definition, my first console. And still is. I'd played on plenty of older consoles before, at my relatives or at my friend's houses, but we all know that's not exactly the same thing. My parents weren't big on games, especially my dad who described things like movies and certain television as "money wasting nonsense". So imagine how my goddamn surprise when on my birthday, I saw a big yest strangely beautiful box labeled as a PS2!

You wanna know what my first games was?

Lego Soccer Mania.

And I loved the shit out of it!

From there a beautiful relationship began. I didn't have many games, but that didn't matter. I loved em, the variety. One moment I was playing a brawler, the next an RPG, a racing game, a platformer, you name it! A few years back, while I was away, my brother sold a few of our PS2 games or threw them into the woods "just because". (Asshole...) But now that I know a bit more about this whole gaming thing, I think it's time I raided my local gamestop. The last one I know of that actually carries PS2 games. (Behind the counter, but still)

Wow just think for a second, so many companies and developers were started or at least noticed in part because of the PS2. So many new ideas were put on the table and exist even today. I get it, they can't just keep making this a console with no new games coming out, but this still kinda saddens me in an oddly happy sorta way. Ambivalence I believe it's called. Thank you, you big black monolith...

And God's speed you magnificent bastard!

As hard as things are on PC, I have my MOST faith in PC as the fight is still going on. We haven't given up, to spite all that has been foisted on us we won't accept it.

PC may be taking a beating from all sides but it's still standing, still alive.

I dismay at how complacent and accepting console gamers are of premium map packs, XBL Gold membership for no guarantee of dedicated servers, and such poor fan unity. And Playstation Plus... you are just paying extra for standard features.

PC with indie, GoG and Steam games, I get the least amount of Bullshit. I get the least amount of shilling and broken promises. I get backwards compatibility. I get a fair price.

PS2 was a no-bullshit platform. It had backwards compatibility and it just worked. To get new weapons and outfits in Tomb Raider Legend you had to complete the levels within time to get gold-medals and find all the secrets. Now the more common way to get extra content is just to pay for it. The games were released FINISHED. Now they are released in a broken state and expect you to wait for downloadable patches. THe game was not constantly rebalanced with updates, it was just the way it was from the start.

gamers are not moving on to windows 8, windows 7 is still selling strong and it has 100% support. It's not even like Vista which was the only way you could get DirectX 10 graphics. I work in a computer repair workshop, everyone there stuck with Windows XP till Win 7 64-bit came along, they all skipped Vista or wished they had. Android/iOS are also non-competitors as they are in the portable gaming space dependent on a totally different from of interaction, on a small touchscreen with touch interface... not a large screen with mouse+KB/gamepad

In 2002, my friend convinced me to pick up a PS2 right after a price drop. It was the first console I'd owned since I sold my Sega Genesis back in 1995. I hadn't been much of a PC gamer, either. I don't think any dedicated console has seen such a broad variety in its game library before or since. So I salute the platform that brought me back into home gaming.

The end of production for the PS2 is momentous, to be sure, and no one makes games for it anymore of course, but let's not act like this is the final resting place of the PS2. It will live forever. That kind of reliability, game catalogue, and nostalgia will keep it alive in our hearts and in our living rooms for many years to come.

You know how some people still hold on to their Atari 2600 from the 1980s? The PS2 will continue like that in a much grander scale, for millions of people will never let go of all those games and all those memories. I am going to own a Playstation 2 for the rest of my life, and I will always be able to go back to the many games I still own for it, and have a great time with them again.

I think at one E3 back in 2010 that it was joked/shown off that ps2 was the biggest selling games console world wide that year so tbh yes its dropping off but its gone the distance and i imagine it'll finish nearer 20 years of making sony pure profit before it finally dies.

And as an owner of 3 in my time it will be missed and also in the UK i'm pretty sure none are sold any where maybe somewhere in the EU still stocks them i guess? :p

Man 13 years that is impressive, what a trooper. So many memories of marathon multiplayer sessions on Timesplitters, slaying Colossi, and sneaking around in a cardboard box in the middle of the jungle. You will be missed ps2 *prays my backwards compatible ps3 stays as reliable as my old ps2 which I now regret getting rid of*

But how will people play their PS2 games now?!
You get the pleasure of buying them all over again on psn, and then again in a few years when the Sony drops whatever backward compatibility it has for the ps4 :p

I have about five spares all ready for action. As long as I have those, a PS2 controller, a USB connector, and a powerful enough computer to run an emulator, the greatest console, the best of the best, shall live on eternal. However, now as each unit falls, we shall give it a warriors cremation, for it was so good to us.

I sold my PS2 in 2007 to afford a 360. After 6 years of joy I felt it was time to move on (also the disc laser was knackered), but it'll always be a massive part of my childhood. Especially since I missed out on PS1 that backwards compatibility opened me up to loads of missed opportunities.

GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas
Final Fantasy 7 - 12
Devil May Cry 1 + 2
Kingdom hearts 1 + 2
Metal Gear Solid 1 - 3
Gran Tourismo 3
WWF/E Smackdown Series

Those are just the series I remember off the top of my head.

Ah, sweet PS2, made when backwards compatibility was not associated with phrases like "for download only" and "we're so sorry, but..."

I defeated Final Fantasy X on you, revelled in Nocturne with you, and watched as Devil May Cry danced to your tune. You weren't durable and you weren't pretty, but you were mine.

See you in the clouds.

From all these song and picture posts... Manly tears were shed... Oh how my best friend has grown old with me..

I still have the slim silver PS2, with all its games, in my basement. I will never let it go, even if it breaks. The memories I've had with that thing are countless. It united me and my childhood friends, all the way from elementary until middle school. The best console that has ever been to me. So many hours poured into each and every game, all the way from the very first PS2 game I played, which was The Italian Job, to Gran Turismo 4, to Metal Gear Solid, Ace Combat, God of War, so many games that I can't possibly count.

I truly salute you my good friend, you were a real trooper and a fighter. A hero that we will never forget. The hero that will live on in our hearts forever.

The PS2 has been the best gaming console in my house for years, with the ability to go back and play my old games, I love my PS2, I have a few spares so that I can enjoy my old games for years to come, even after they stop making and selling the PS2 here in Australia.

Thank you my dear friend, for all of your service and years of fun. I'll continue to enjoy your company.

now there is no confirmation here but what i heard was that microsoft is going to push win8 the same way they did vista. ban sales for xp and they can only sell win 8. they want to control your pc and win 8 is the first one that truly allows that (altrough i could argue that UAC has to be made illegal).
moble phoe games are the largest share of gaming market by now, and trust me they are taking gamers away with how complex their gettin
beside, small touchscreen wth touch tneraction, a bit too much like wiiu....
