PlayStation 3 Turns Five Years Old

Sony celebrates by naming a dozen developers favorite PS3 games.

On November 17th, 2006, you could buy a PlayStation 3 in North America for a cool $599. Sure, having a Blu-Ray player for that amount of money in addition to a gaming system wasn't terrible, but you could say the chips were stacked against Sony's new console. The pricepoint ended up dropping, and several great exclusive titles have brought accolades to make the PS3 one of the most successful videogame consoles ever. To commemorate the five year anniversary, Sony asked several prominent game developers to list their favorite PS3 games and the diversity of their responses might surprise you.

On the top of the list were several mentions of Naughty Dog's Uncharted series but many were split on which game to include. David Jaffe (God of War, Twisted Metal) wrote that he prefers UNCHARTED: Drake's Fortune "Yes, I dig #1 more than #2" while Cliff Blezinski from Epic Games also went with the original over Among Thieves.

As far as "art house" games, Flower and Heavy Rain get many mentions. "There are days where I still see flashes of Flower in my minds eye, and whenever I think of videogames, this one pops up in my head," said Jonathan Mak from Queasy Games. "Maybe it's simply because it's so damned beautiful."

Steve Papoutsis, head of Visceral Games, loved what Heavy Rain meant for the medium. "It proved you could create a story that both pulled you in and made you care about the outcome and characters," he said. "I tell all my friends to give it a try, really, really enjoyed it."

God of War III, Infamous, and LittleBigPlanet get mentioned several developers, but there were just as many outliers. "Joe Danger - I love this game," said BioShock creator Ken Levine. "It's like Excitebike, but I'm playing it in a nice house rather than the crappy studio apartment I had in 1989."

Evan Wells, co-President of Naughty Dog went even more retro with Pac-Man Championship Edition DX "Who knew a concept three decades old could be reinvented in such a fresh and addictive way?" he asked.

The PlayStation 3 has had its share of dark patches as well. The aforementioned high price didn't exactly move tons of units to start with, and controversies like the hacking of the PlayStation Network [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/tag/other%20os?from_search=1] mar the console's five years of existence. But when gaming history looks back at the PlayStation 3, hopefully the positives in these standout titles outweigh any negatives.

Wow, the PS3 is five years old. Time sure goes by fast because it doesn't feel like it was released 5 years ago. I do remember the outrage when it was announced it was $600. I didn't get it until like 2 years later. Some great titles (Infamous and Uncharted, among others, were amazing!) have come out for the PS3 so happy birthday PS3.

I'm a Playstation fan regardless of the negatives.

Wow, really?

I didn't get mine until last Christmas.

It certainly doesn't feel like there's 5 years worth of decent games on the thing anyway.

It's really been that long? Damn, time sure was flying with that.

I remember I got mine several months after they announced it, and then consoling my bank account for spending that much on something that didn't have much of anything to play on it.

Good times, good times.

Happy Birthday PS3!

I got mine about a year after release (while $500 was a hard sell on my dad, some how $399 made more sense ... but I'm not mad! =P) and I've loved it ever since. I've owned every generation of Playstation, and I have never been disappointed with any system. Even with the hiccups that the PS3 had over this five-year period, the good heavily outweighs the bad. Great exclusives. Great quality. And most importantly: great fun. I strongly believe that in the next 20 or 30 years, video game enthusiasts will look back on the PS3 and call it one of the greatest gaming consoles of all time.

But seriously, the PS3 is a good time. Good times now, more good times to come =)

PS2 was better IMHO
I wonder when the Wii's birthday is?
19th of November...so in 2 days. :p

And I do agree, the PS2 was better, but then again it was and still is around for like 10 years now? And the catalogue for it is enormous, gigantic...genormous? Idk :p

OT: Nice...me and my brother didn't get a PS3 until earlier this year, played some good games though. ;)

Happy birthday PS3. I may not own one but I respect that it has been a significant influence in the gaming market. Keep up all the good work you do.

P.S. I didn't get one because I had the choice of a $300 Xbox 360 or a $699 PS3. Hahahahahahahaha yeah right.

I was amazed at the mainstreamness of the listings. A lot of safe choices, and while there is nothing wrong with that, it is kinda sad to see DEVELOPERS admire God of War or Uncharted more than Heavy Rain or Flower (which were gladly still mentioned a few times).

I just strikes me as odd that they would think high production values are more entertaining than a great concept. Games sure have gotten bigger and brighter, so few have actually gotten BETTER.

I've been playing on PlayStation since I got the PS1 back in 1998. It gave me Spyro and I gave it my loyalty.

Well...there weren't any good games for the first couple of years.

I just recently rented Heavy Rain but haven't gotten very far. Watching that kid eat his dinner was excruciating. I hope it gets more interesting or this is going back quick.

So to mark the occasion, what feature is Sony taking away from the ps3?

I haven't been too pleased with the support the ps3 has gotten over the years (from Sony and third party publishers) but hey, at least it doesn't brick at a rate of 50%, right?

I bought one of those big ass brick PS3s, you know, one with 100% backwards compatibility? Cost me a pretty penny, but it is so damned nice playing any of my catalog from all three consoles with no issues on one machine. So cheers PS3 and may you have many more good years ahead.

Yeah, seriously, where's the next WipeOut, Zone of Enders, Ace Combat...

*Looks at new Assault Horizon*

... you know what, back that up, I don't want it.

But yeah, the PS2's library was much more charming.

I agree with David Jaffe and Cliff Blezinski. Uncharted 1 was better than Uncharted 2.

I didn't like how Drake was almost a superhero in Uncharted 2 (for all the times he gets injured or nearly dies, he's back at it within hours, or a couple days tops for the really big life threatening ones). And the plot was exactly the same as Uncharted 1, just with different nouns filling in for the villain and macguffin roles. Makes sense now that we know they make all the set pieces first and come up with some plot to tie them together. Oh, and Uncharted 1 didn't have terrible multiplayer tacked on.

As for inFamous, why can't everyone just let that rot and be forgotten already? Why don't we just start talking about Haze again while we're at it? That apparently sucked just as hard as inFamous, but it doesn't seem to get a free pass just for being PS3 exclusive like inFamous does.

I just beat heavy rain not even 20 minutes ago. I must say that it IS a must play. However You cant really play it more than once as the killer never changes. Its always the same guy. On that token though it really is a fantastic game one that must be played to appreciate the medium in which it is presented.

I bought my Ps3 back in 2008, and despite an early drought of good games, there has been plenty to satisfy me since 2010. All in all, I am totally happy with the Ps3, despite the hacking problem they had back in March.

I always looked at the Xbox 360 but yeah .. diversity

Yes most games are multi console BUT and a big BUT many weird games..japanese games.. odd games end up on the PS3. I like it.. Plus Blu ray :)

I love a good blu-ray movie! Streaming might be "easier" but definitely doesn't hits the quality mark of blu-ray
