We are at weird place in the console war.

PS5 Pro is announcing specs and there isn't a thread on it here?

It will cost $700 and be w/o a disc. You can get the add on (About $80). Then I'd wanna add a 4 TB for another $300ish. So, about $1,100. 1/2 way thru this gen. That is finally coming out with a handful of games not for the PS4 Pro.

Wonder if the $500 bundle will still be available on the Pro's launch.

Because most of us are not getting it. Either because we already have a PS5, SERIES X, Switch, gaming PC, or all the above. Not worth the upgrade nor price of admission. Fuck Sony.

Looks like PS5 might be my last console, because I'm not buying one without a disk drive. Glad I ended up getting one last year instead of waiting for this lame pro version. Also there's still only like 2 or 3 reasons to own a PS5.

My reasons for getting a PS5:
  1. Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  2. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
  3. Dead Space Remake
  4. Hi-Fi Rush
  5. All PS4 versions of the RE Engine Resident Evil games get the free upgrade with enhanced visuals and sound.
  6. Backwards compatibility for the rest of the games.

Real story; A large play-it-trade video game store just went bankrupt in my city. Yeah, people would rather play PC, iOS, Android, and others than PS5.

That's your area in whever you live in the US. Still of plenty of people that want a PS5, Series X, Switch, or waiting on Nintendo's next console in Michigan. Hell, there are some people buying or re-buying PS4s again. Though our state is known to have one of the biggest sells on Switch consoles.

There really isn't much to write about with the console. It's an upgraded but expensive version of the same system. Sony is doing exactly what i expected and said they would do if Microsoft didn't step up and serve as competition. Sony killed it during the PS4 because the ps3 was trash and the 360 was king, then Xbox shit their pants and Sony pounced, learning their lesson in the process. However when you no longer have to compete, you no longer have to be the "customer first" company and can start being greedy shitfucks since the customer doesn't have a good alternative to turn to in the meantime.

The best thing that can happen to Sony fans is Microsoft getting their shit together and coming back swinging into the console war.

I just got my ps5 like a year ago and love it to bits, I don't need this lol. I guess it's good for people who hadn't yet gotten one.

That's my feeling, or if you are an extreme enthusiast.

But If you are just now looking into the PS5, then you might as well get the Pro for the added longevity of the console at this point. You dont NEED the vertical stand or disc drive and I don't think it's fair to get mad at optional items.

The stand is one thing, but the disk drive most people need because most people like having physical versions of their games. So if they want to disc drive, they are better off just getting the regular PS5 and be done with it. There are still plenty of people who like having physical versions of game; don't matter if they're old or young. Sony is taking away your ability to get these games physically. Hence making the disc drive an extra eighty bucks. Fuck that shit. You're basically paying near a thousand dollars for an "upgraded" console with no disc drive. We call that a rip off and a scam. You might as well buy a mid to high end gaming pc and done with it.

i mean I hate to say it because i love having the physical discs, but physical media is fucking dying dude. Not only are retail stores that shit that shit burning out, but companies dont even wanna give you a disc with your collector's editions anymore. I wouldn't be shocked to find the next generation of consoles being all digital the same way the PC is now.

Not to mention the discs are barely more than liscenses to download the game anyway.

With the insanely bloated price and lack of clear, marketable advantage over the base model I don't really think that a "you might as well get the Pro" is warranted for most customers.

Maybe if the Pro model was around the PS5's launch price, but it laughably isn't, it's roughly 50% more expensive ( and the base model's price is still hovering around its launch price near 4 years later ... ).

Certain people keep saying that yet I still see people wanting or buying physical versions from either secondhand retail stores or amazon. The reason why certain mainstream stores like Best Buy, aren't stocking blu-ray and dvd's is because they had already planned this back in 2014 (an employee, let me in on a little secret back then), and are not making all the money in the universe from it.

The only reason it's "dying" is cause these companies don't want people having any type of physical ownership and be plugged in 24/7 to online/streaming and allow you to use the licensed. Which can be taken away at any time. As we seen what Funimation, that is something nobody wants but the greedy and powerful. Despite whatever people bought on the Funimation streaming service, as soon as they shut it down, the customers purchases went along with it and they would not get a refund. I'm so glad I never signed up for any of that. Physical forever.

While ps5 games themselves are indeed way less relevant to get physical copies of nowadays (only got Unicorn Overlord cause that LE was amazingballs) I do still thoroughly use the disk drive for things like Elden Ring and a bunch of other ps4 games that eventually got ps5 versions, so on that alone you still definitely have a reason to buy the disc drive, but again, if you're someone who just has no ps4 library of games to tap into, I can see why you'd want the disc-less version. And hey, the disc drive is actually cheaper than how much more expensive the ps5 that had it was compared to the one without it. I think it's what, 60-70 bucks right? Ps5 was 100 bucks more expensive back then lol.

Most digital games do definitely get huge discounts though. I don't know if it's as big of a discount as you may find in a used game store or what have you, but it's definitely significant. Like for example I got Tales of Arise for I think 13 bucks or something when they were celebrating the DLC expansion of it coming out. You just wanna wishlist everything and keep an eye out for such deals. I think it's competitive enough to eclipse physical games, at least on PSN. I know nintendo games are notorious for not going under much discounts so for those there may be a future yet.

Then just buy the standard discless non-Pro PS5 version and save you way more cash. Those models still exist and are sold in stores.

Sometimes digital sales are better than the physical sales, but it varies on the game, how long it's been out. how well it did, and digital retail. Steam usually has the best sales and tend to cheaper than the big three, but Sony is the second most consistent with cheaper sales than physical from time to time.

Nintendo is video game equivalent for Disney. They rarely ever price drop, and most it's $10 off on a majority of their first party. Be it the physical version or digital. The only time they go own a deeper sale or 1st party games at $20, is when they're phasing out their old console and lining up for the new console. They've been doing this since forever, but it's really noticeable around the end of the GC era.

Hold up, PS3 was not trash. It was the most feature-rich console ever released with a firmware-upgradable Blu-ray player, had some outstanding exclusives that sold people just on demos alone, and ultimately ended up outselling the 360 anyways. The ironic thing was this might not have happened if they rushed it to market the same way Microsoft did before it was ready. They may have stumbled out the gate but dug deep when most of the industry wrote them off that Gen and pulled off one of gaming’s biggest turnarounds.

Yeah ps3 was great, it just had a rough first couple of years and it had actual competition from the 360 which was the shooter system for a time in gaming where shooters were the biggest they've ever been.

At $1200+ AUD, this is going to be a fucking hard sell. Some people are gonna buy it, of that I have no doubt, but I’m foreseeing an opposite sort of problem to the PS5 during COVID in that instead of ghosting the shelves, it may well warm them.

I'm not so sure that this is necessarily a sign that console games are dying, and mobile/PC is thriving. More like another indication that physical media is on its way out for the mainstream, so business that focus on that kind of thing aren't likely long for this world.

The PS5 is £100 cheaper without a disc drive. You don't even have a choice with the PS5 Pro, and you have to buy one separately if you want one.

The Xbox Series S doesn't have a disc drive, and the new Xbox Series X model doesn't either.

And if you're playing on PC, you don't even have a choice anymore - and you haven't for years.

Only the Nintendo Switch comes with one as standard, and who knows what the Switch 2 will look like.

The convenience of digital delivery is beating out physical media for most people, and it benefits console manufacturers to encourage this, so that they can take their 30% cut that they were otherwise sacrificing to third-party physical stores.

Yet most of the second hand retail stores in michigan are doing fine. I did notice that's a lot of mainstream retail stores are sizzling out DVDs. I already mentioned Best Buy, but it looks like Meijer is doing this too now. Target still sells movies, but they have fewer isles than what they had beforehand. Even Wal-Mart is a similar case, but It still sells more dvds and Blu-rays, than either of those other stores i've mentioned. All of these stores I mentioned are still selling a bunch of games just fine. Those mainstream stores justifications are that they "can't" compete with Amazon. You all can compete just fine, but a majority y"alld sales either suck or you make the standard price of admission way too high. Wal-Mart Seems to be the only one that gets this and actually has most of its movie sales match that of Amazon. Not all the time but close enough.
