Anyone suggested Warframe [http://store.steampowered.com/app/230410/Warframe/] yet? I suggest Warframe [http://store.steampowered.com/app/230410/Warframe/].
Well Warframe seems pretty damn cool. It says co-op multiplayer. Can I play alone or maybe with bots? Either way thank you Loop Striken for your suggestion. Game looks tight.

I don't actually have any suggestions, but WOW! I had an old Tandy TRS-80 too! I think I played a bunch of those old TSR D&D RPGs on it.
Damn Cycloptomese you must be old like me. For me it was mostly Colossal Cave Aventure and Zork 1. My grandma had an Apple II C and I used to play text only Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. That game was almost impossible. Flashbask city for sure.

I played it in the Internet age, and I ended up looking up most of the answers... You won't believe what I felt when I found out you had to hang the dressing gown on the hook, put the towel over the grate, the satchel over the hatch, and the junk mail that you probably left at Arthur's now-destroyed house on the satchel.

Oh man, so many Archons! Where did they all come from? I haven't seen nearly that many since the first time I made it to the plane of air and had no idea what to do and spent like 20 minutes fighting an endless horde of monsters that covered half the screen.

Zen would be horrendous to play! That would be waaay to slow. Not to mention having a pet would be pretty much impossible, I think.

All this Nethack talk, I think I'm gonna have to fire it up and start playing again!
Yea that happened to me as well so I've been messing around on my local server. I didn't really realize the mob spawns were related to your level. I used to reverse genocide wraiths and go right up to 30 for the HP and mana but then I get all those Archon spawns. Now I frolick with Foocubi to boost my mana and HPs without getting too many levels. They'll give you levels as well but the ratio is a lot better. As a wizard I get my last and very important intrinsic (Teleport Control) at 17 so I try to stop at about 18 or 19 because sooner or later you'll lose a level if you are self polymorphing like I always do so you need a bit of a buffer.

If enough folks were interested (which I doubt) I'd love to have a little friendly competition. Everyone creates a new account and we see who can ascend the fastest or pick a certain class or whatever to try head to head. Anyway I love that damn game and will never get tired of it I don't think.
That'd be fun, but I doubt there'll be interest. I made a thread when 3.6.0 came out and it got less than 10 responses. You'd beat me handily for sure as well. I haven't played in a couple years and don't have anything even in the ballpark of a 43% ascension rate.

One more comment on the Archons. No way I get through that without charm monster. I'd say impossible based on the situation I was in. He'd summon nasties and I'd charm them to make a buffer between me and the Archons. They were actually doing me a favor with the summons.
Yet another reason why wizard is the best class!

Somebody said that Dwarf Valkyrie was easier to ascend with, at least for a beginner. At risk of derailing this thread, what's the deal with that?

Well a Wizard has a big spell list with with all kinds of utility spells but they are tough to play unless you know the game very well. If you can pull it off though there is nothing like meeting a Minotaur which could normally kill you in two or three hits and zapping his ass with finger of death and turning him into a pile of ashes on the floor.

As a Dwarf Valkyrie you can dip a normal longsword and turn it into Excalibur at level five. They can also get through a large area called the Mines and get to Minetown where there are shops and a random altar without being attacked by most of the mobs along the way. They can wear any armor and will basically just beat the hell out of whatever they come across.

So, 3.5 minmaxed fighter vs. 3.5 wizard. I see.

DarthCoercis thank you for your suggestions. Quest for Glory looks interesting and the entire 1-5 bundles on Steam is only 10 bucks. Probaby going to pick that up. Betrayal at Krondor? Damn dude that's going way back. I played it but it's been so long I don't remember a thing. Might have a look. I usually don't do horror but Vampire the Maquerade looks pretty good. Very possible I'll try that one. Ultima Underworld is another one I played and don't remember a thing about. Reading about it now. Sacred Gold also looks pretty good and I have that on my list of potentials.

Thanks again for all the recommendations. Most appreciated.
No worries, mate.

Quest For Glory is my favourite game series, just edging out the ancient Pools of Radiance series, so hope you enjoy it. QfG2 never got an official vga remake though, so the one in that bundle is in EGA and uses text parsing for pretty much everything except walking around and combat. There is a fan-made updated version floating around the web somewhere though.

Uh... That's probably not happening. It's a lot of money to put into one game. Heck, even getting PlayStation Now would also require a PS3 or PS4 controller.

leet_x1337 you are right about that. I wouldn't buy a console for one game or twenty games. Unless something changes I'll be a PC gamer for life. Most of the games I like are FPx and I can't hit a damn thing with an analog stick. Give me a mouse, however, and it's all over jack.

Bots, no. Solo...depends on the mission and your loadout. A lot of the missions can be soloed, but a good number of the bosses are balanced against a group (especially when considering newer players). A few of the missions, however, are "see how long you can survive/protect the hub", and trying to do those solo is VERY counterproductive. In those cases you get more rewards the longer you stay in the mission, and the enemies increase in difficulty as you go. Given the right well levelled warframe and the right gear, you can probably get to the first extraction opportunity, but with a well levelled team you can get through more waves per run. And that's important because - unless you feel like being a 'whale' - that's how you'll get most of platinum to buy new warframe and weapon slots.

Before going any further, let me clarify that co-op in Warframe is quite easy to pull off. It's pretty much 'opt out' rather than 'opt in', in fact. You plug in the mission you want to do and the game will quickly search for anyone else who is either in the instance with a group of less than 4 or has recently expressed an interest in the same instance. If it finds other players you could fit in a group with, it teams you up. If not, then after a few seconds it'll toss you into the mission (others can still join you during the mission). As a self-described "MMO hermit", I was a bit resentful of that at first, but I grew to appreciate it after a few "king of the hill" matches.

Returning to the topic of platinum: Warframe is a F2P game and its main source of income is platinum, which is their real money currency. Platinum is used for a few things like speeding up crafting (and speeding crafting is NEVER worth it. Crafting continues whether you're playing the game or not, so just take a break and be patient), immediate purchase of various equipment/warframes/cosmetics in the market, and most importantly purchase of additional warframe slots and weapon/pet slots (Which is almost always what you want to use it for. Warframe operates very much like Monster Hunter in that your equipment defines every statistical aspect of your character, so the more warframes and equipment you have, the better). That being said, what would otherwise be a prohibitive Pay to Win restriction ends up working because of how the reward system and player to player market works.

Short version is that unless you purchase them with platinum, a good number of "Prime" warframe and equipment parts are largely acquired by opening 'relics' (which are largely acquired through the aforementioned survival/king of the hill matches, and opened by collecting reactant during certain alerts (almost always active)). In many cases the random element and asymmetric drop rates make it difficult to get every piece you need...and this is where the player to player market comes in. See, the Player to Player market allows for trading crafting pieces and trading currency like platinum. So what ends up happening is that people end up opening relics, going to the trade channel and saying that, for the sake of example, they "WTS Oberon Prime Chasis, 20 platinum". It might take them a while to get a hit (especially as the process is entirely manual and the trade chat moves quite fast), but when they find someone willing to meet their price, boom. The other player gets their Oberon Prime Chasis and they get their 20 platinum...which they can then use to buy a new warframe slot.

I'm probably dumping a bit too much information on you here, but I figured those were the 'need to know what you're getting into' points. For what it's worth, I'm actually quite fond of the game myself and hold it up as an example of "F2P done right".

As a side note for any current or potential Nethack players. My v3.4.3 config file is the bomb. I stole most of the sections from the very top players in the game and it will really add to your experience. You can find it here:

Peace kid and thank for asking. It let me vomit more Nethack stuff all over this thread. :)
I've been trying this out, and it's really cool! But do you have one for 3.6.0? Cause this one doesn't work.

The biggest problem with Nethack is that I get so obsessive playing it. I always think "I'll just do this one thing" and then next thing I know I've spent 6 hours on it!

Well the basic difference is that you have a lot higher chance of making it through the first part of the game as a Valkyrie so good for new player. Past that point a Wizard really shines... from my perspective.

I won't play 3.6 because they nerfed Elbereth and the game is already hard enough for me without that sort of change. If it were me I'd jump on IRC and ask for a config file reference. You'll get something right away I'm sure.

You just did it to me man. I logged on the other day to take that screenshot and knew I left myself in pretty good shape and now I'm at it again. I even have a marker on me so it's on for sure.

I always forget to use Elbereth. How often do you use it? It probably would have saved me on my last run, where I started with a ring of regeneration and a wand of polymorph. I got cocky and went past level 14 with an armor class of 4 and got mauled by a zruty in 2 turns.

I get that feeling from playing Gungeon and Spelunky. Both top-tier action-roguelikes. The roguelike elements aren't gratuitous, but luck doesn't rule your runs; almost all of them can be completed if you know what you're doing.

(I haven't yet cleared either of them, but I've got some beginner tips: for Gungeon, run with the Marine first of all, since he gets higher accuracy and more health as a passive. In Spelunky, make sure you use all your bombs, since almost everything's destructible, and whip crates open to get more.)

I would not say that I?m an very old player, but I played a lot of different games from arcades to online shooters, now I'm into online games and this one microgaming live dealer [http://live-casino-online.org/platform/live-dealer-microgaming/] of my favorites
