Think of it. Create your own trainer's look. Choose a starter, and go out into the world of pokemon! Battle other players or some npcs, explore the regions looking for pokemon, challenge gym leaders and try to become the strongest. 3D for both exploring and battling(battling would be similar to pokemon stadium's style). And I guess contests every 1 or 2 hours.

It would most likely not be free, but the payments would be like Guild Wars, were you buy the first one for a set price, and expansions would also be a set price.

I think that this might work, but it would be difficult. Is this a good idea?

Ya, it's a good idea. That probably the reason why everyone else came up with it, too. I think that the only reason why Nintendo didn't already do this is because consoles don't support MMOs well, let alone Nintendo consoles.

Yea, I actually think Pokemon is one of the only franchises that would really lend itself well to an MMO.

Just think about having the best players on a server being the elite four. That'd be sweet.

Agreed, and I am not even much of a fan of Pokemon or MMO's, it just seems like the franchise that would fit the style of game play very well.

I don't think it would work. Major changes would have to be made to the pokemon system, and I don't think it would be as fun as people imagine it.

There is already a mod in development for Half-Life 2 which is a pokemon MMO. [http://www.moddb.com/mods/pokemon-online]

No idea whether there will be an official one. I hope so. Seems like a neat premise.

I don't see it happening. I can't imagine Nintendo having the resources to develop and maintain a PC game, and I can't imagine a Nintendo console ever having good online play. I'm not sure how good that game would be, either. Pokemon is nothing without portability. It might work as a flash game where you could log in from any computer.

Less on the MMORPG, more on the RPG. I've been behind this for a very long time, a proper Pokemon RPG with quests, choices, all that bollocks, not "Get pokemon, beat gyms, ascend Mount Olympus to slapfight with the Elite Four".

If it HAS to come in a MMO wrapper, I think it'd be a small price to pay. But as per usual, I'd rather pay no price whatsoever.
Your idea is good, but i can definetly see it as both

It sounds like what Pokemon should have been in the first place. A game about people training their Pokemon to do battle with each other just sounds so much more like it should involve a world of real people training and competing, instead of one person playing against NPC's of gradually increasing difficulty.
What gradual increase of difficulty. I probaly played it all wrong but 30hrs into diamond i only had 3 gym badges and on my way to the next city the opponents pokemon levels jumped from lvl 20's to lvl 30's. You could only catch lvl 16 pokemone in the area as well.

OT: I would play the MMO. Would be a fun change of pace. Although there would be alot of Pidgy vs Pidgy for a long time.

I think all of the elements of Pokemon lend itself perfectly to an MMO. Half the premises of the game basically sets it up as such now, just with players still in isolated worlds. Just implement a system that allows many players at once, and I see a great MMO coming.

surprising no one has made on yet, it would work great actually. Have a massive open ended world, throw in some pokemon and let players catch em all

Given Pokemons popularity and the fact it already has a world made for it the MMO step seems to be the next logical one to me. Would work very, very, well actually. The open ended world is already there, the combat system is now tried and proven in many single player pokemon games and hell the rest of the game play doesn't have to change either.

All would be needed is to make it much more graphical, a little more fluid (no sudden pop ups that you have discovered a so and so) and of course other people hunting/challenging you.

So well I am going to Patent the idea right now... nah nah nah....

Added: Hell the more I think on this the better the idea becomes. Even remove NPC combat, leave them as traders and healers and stuffs, to the point that the guilds themselves are player owned and ... ouch.

Could be big, could be very big.

Think about it if it was an MMO style game the grassy fields would be so packed that every one would be stuck at the first bottleneck. "Assuming that you could not walk threw other players." And there would be lines to go, and fight gym leaders. Quite frankly I think it sounds like fun, but growing up playing on the original red version it has been quite some time. {After thought} I just remembered that there is a pokemon mmo like the one you described as an app on facebook. I don't remember its name but I last played it about a year ago, and it might or might not have been taken down

There actually is such a thing, in fact type it in on Google and you'll get quite a few. Not official ones of course, but still.

I don't think an mmo would work too well. It'd need a lot of big changes like; rpg elements on the attacks, gaining money from wild pokemon, MORE pokemon (or variations) and it'd need to be 3D.

What would work though is a co-op pokemon. Possibly with smaller private servers each holding between anywhere from 2-6 players or maybe even up to 20.
Basis is basically what's already incorporated into the game only instead of just having battles and trading, you can walk around the whole world instead!

What would be the advantage to Pokemon being an MMO over just keeping it as a single player game with multiplayer capabilities?

I keep hearing people say that it would "work well" as an MMO, but what would you do in the MMO that you can't do with a single player game? Group content? Dungeons? Pokemon raids? How would that work, much less be balanced? How would you handle rare or legendary pokemon in a MMO, would there only be one and whoever gets it fist is awesome and everyone else is out of luck? Would it be a ridiculously rare spawn that everyone could camp? Would it just not be that rare, and eventually everyone is running around with everything?

What would be unique to a Pokemon MMO that we don't already have in the single player games, other than seeing hundreds of other players running around in the tall grass with you? What would make people pay a subscription for this, instead of just digging out their DS and battling or trading with people for free?

Now what I WOULD love to see a console Pokemon that is remade from the ground up with all of the content/pokemon from all of the Gameboy games. No more reusing old sprites and game engines, and no more limiting the pokemon available in a single game. Add more depth to it, have random natural disasters happen that you need certain types of pokemon to stop, and other random events.

Take the world they've developed and make it actually feel like the world, and keep on expanding on the online features. I'd rather see them improve on that than try to tread into MMO territory and possibly lose what makes Pokemon fun in the first place.
