I am doing a project for my Physical science class, Now I was wondering if you have ever done Cross Country and you have used spikes, and you have used Vibrums, or the toe shoes, which do you prefer? Now if you haven't which do you think is better for running, Running shoes or barefoot? Much thanks Escapist

Um...running shoes. I don't like spikes or Vibrams. Just plain shoes for me. =)

Surely it would depend on what surface you're running on....

I used spikes when I used to sprint (track) and they do make a difference.

When I was doing cross country on fields and the like I used a comfortable pair of trainers with fairly decent grip.

I had to google Vibrams, they look a tad weird.

If you have the money, invest in both otherwise just buy trainers as I would rather have a pair of trainers for running on concrete as well as track.

Ugh I hate Vibrams. I saw someone wearing them a couple months back and searched them, then tried a pair at my local running store. They were terrible, most uncomfortable thing I've ever worn.

I only use runners, for both cross country, running, and parkour. Though I'm looking to get a dedicated pair of parkour shoes, which should improve the lifespan of my running shoes. The only problem is that I have really, really, really flat feet, so I have to be really specific in my shoe selection, as I can't run with orthodics.

Just try to keep up. And they are also very, very comfortable.

You need cross country spikes if you're going to be racing. They make a huge difference on wet or hilly courses. But no matter what you need a pair of running shoes. You can't wear spikes for regular training runs, it'll destroy your calves.

I've never worn Vibrams, and I only know one person who uses them. He says they're great, but personally I don't see the point. Running shoes and spikes work perfectly fine for me.

Vibrams are excellent to use because they force you to have good form, unlike normal running shoes which have a lot of excess padding. Correct form is toes or midfoot first, then letting your muscles absorb the impact.

Normal shoes allow you to land heel first because it doesn't hurt due to the padding. This is inefficient and also sends a shock through your leg every time you land, sometimes leading to injuries.

Vibrams take about a month to get used to, and it hurts a ton at first, but if you stick with it, they are fantastic.

I haven't tried Vibrams yet, I love my Sauconys. Curious about them though, they look so different.

Spikes for races, runners for training, barefoot for strides
