I don't think it is the point to come up with norms and exceptions, but rather to find which quality is more important. My money is on maturity.

I know that one of the people I regularly play TF2 with is around 13. He's good at the game and polite about it, so I never found a problem with it.

Of course, the kind of stupid horseplay is alright sometimes, just don't do it in open matches.

I've never seen a mature child before, but if there is one (other than me) I'll trust them.

Everyone under 18 says 'I'm mature for my age'.

There's no way to effectively measure maturity, so age it is. I can bet most of the people who voted maturity are under 18.

Besides, kids are gonna play games anyway. I was playing GTA 3 and trying to pick up hookers at 12.

There is only a few mature kids, so its probably safer and more accurate to have the age restrictions.

Heres a story (Not of a man named bradey so shut up!)

I was forced to live in a 2 1/2 bedroom trailer when I was 16 due to mother dearest being her usual retarded self. Up the hill from us lived a small hispanic family, a father, mother, and 2 kids, aged 11 and 8. both were allowed to play grand theft auto 3 on the PS2. One kid (The 8 year old) was a violent, hyperactive git. While the older brother, whom also played it, was calm, laid back, intelligent, and passive. It goes to show that video games don't make people violent, it's their maturity level when accessing older person, or adult content that can do such things. Not to mention, I'm not sure if that kid was a loud, screeching, future serial killer BEFORE the game was introduced.

If parents actually payed attention to what their kids played though, this would never be an issue.

Heres my problem with that. Age has nothing to do with Maturity. That 11 year old I talked about before would never be shouting "YOU STOLE MY FUCKING CLOUD SONG!". Being online so long, I have seen 32 year old MOTHERS trolling online, while I have discovered 11 year olds playing a game with me (once they got their mic on) in a M for mature or 17+ game/and-or/MMO and they were placid, mature, and very well read at that.

This thread is a no-brainer. Of course the answer is maturity. If your 11 year old daughter can handle violence, by all means then you may allow her to play the violent T-rated games. Besides, ratings systems are more like guidelines than a code you must follow.

I'm of the opinion, without wishing to sound arrogant, that many of the members on here would vouch for my maturity despite me being only 16. And I like to think that a few more would vouch for my responsibility and deep sexy voice.
I like to think that.

So yes, maturity over age. Anyone who wants to tar everyone below 18 with the same brush is just naive.

Definitely maturity, I mean, I was playing M games since 8 years old, tried out Mortal Kombat Trilogy on the N64, Resident Evil 2 at 9 years old on the N64, and even the first GTA after that. I always knew that there was nothing wrong with violent video games and I could play them just fine.

Since most great games are rated M it's sad how younger kids who could potentially enjoy them as much as us aren't able to because of ESRB ratings.

Some kind of maturity filter would be cool.

I don't think age has a great affect on it. I had a 34 year old Mormon on my friends list who is one of the most immature people I've ever talked to and I also have a 16 year old kid from Leeds on my friends list who is considerably more mature than him.

I for one, am not playing video games for a polite, mature environment. If you're playing video games I'm pretty sure your not the epitome of maturity and theres room for compromise. COD 4 online play isn't a formal dinner party its a goddamn game.

I've played with 13 year old's that know how to spell correctly and pretty much be mature and I've played with 20 year old's who can't even put one coherent sentence together.

Maturity > Age

I played god of war when I was aproximately 10 (I turned 15 a few months back, so my guess might be off @_@ ), and I'm not a psychopath running around with swords on chains beheading people and starting quicktime events when I want to get on a bus.

the only rule I'd instate is that you must be atleast 14 to play a online game, or even have access to the internet mainly because screaming with a voice so high that you crack your monitor everytime I play as sniper is a crime against my ears. Hopefully by 14 you've dropped and your voice has changed, luckily for me I've had a low (pitch wise) voice since I was 11. :D

So yeah Maturity wins, but there's a minimum age for the sake of other people, and preventing another name on the list of internet Dumbass' that need to be castrated to prevent possible off-spring.

No offense, but the wording of this is obviously slanted against the age choice. Even then you are preaching to the proverbial choir.

It would be like me making a poll asking,

A. We should continue voting idiots into political offices

B. We should press for a better quality of leadership

I agree with your sentiment, but it was somewhat misplaced.

Maturity and age are synonymous.
What?!?
No they aren't.

Some university students go partying every night, some study every night.
The former are immature, the latter mature, yet they are all exactly the same age.
Want to look it up? They are. The examples you listed are simply examples of "acting immature", meaning to act younger than you are.

I judge people (in game) based on what they say/ type. Age doesn't bother me in itself. I just think that younger people should realise the negative perception they have within the gaming community and should just act with a degree of humility.

There's alot of unfair and arbitrary (and in my view repugnant)condescension from a few older gamers (as in not young) as well. SO before we get too into the accusations of immaturity and 'smart ass'ness, we should note whether we simply told them to 'just relax and focus on capping the point' or did we tell them to 'STFU, you little *****'.

Catch 22. Let me have it because I'm so mature, none of those other kids are as mature as me. They all smell, I'm the special one.
My Mummy says I'm special :(
I'm special too. That's why mummy and daddy said it was all right if I drank bleach even if the other kids parents wouldn't let them.
This is actually important for all of the people that start these threads to think about. I don't know how many of these "maturity vs. age" topics I've seen, but usually the OP is underage and is upset that someone suggests they shouldn't be playing the games they love so much. Not all of the time, and I can't comment specifically on this topic, but if you just take a casual glance at Amazon's gaming section, you'll see that there are tons of kids on there bitching about a parent who wouldn't allow them to play GTA.
