During my grade school years I used to be obsessed with Anime, manga, and Japanese culture. From things like Pokemon, Tenchi Muyo!, Dragon Ball Z... generally anything with an anime-ish look. Now when I try to get into a series, I can't stand it. Not that it's socially embarrassing or awkward (a lot of my friends are still into it) but it tends to make little to no sense to me. Other than the aesthetics, it utterly lost its appeal. Same goes with JRPGs. The plot line can be solid, but the journey from point A to point B is too filled with nonsense for my taste now.

It was just a phase to me, but I never thought it would end. I'd place it above gaming on my level of interest back then. I don't think it was a maturity thing to be honest, but it could be. How many of you went through Anime as a phase and what are you reasons for not liking it so much now? Also, I'm willing to give it another chance, so if you have any recommendations for me, please tell.

Ex Anime watcher (I wouldn't say fan) here.
I loved stuff like DragonBall and YuGiOh, but for some reason I can't watch Anime any more.
I only watch TV series (and ocasionally some nostalgic cartoons) nowadays.

Yeah, I wouldnt say fan. I remember being somewhat into it when it was still sort of exotic. Sort of the days of Akira, Project AKO, Ghost in the shell (long before SAC) and later into the early days of toonami with DBZ, Bio O, Outlaw star. After that it started to all blend together into a horrible gelatenous mutated monstrosity where you could never really tell where one anime ended and another began.

So now, pretty much over it. I will give anime a chance. The last time i was pleasantly surprised was with Deathnote, though I did consider giving Bleach a try, I just couldnt be compelled to give two shits.

I still like it. I mostly liked shounen stuff(Dragon Ball, One Piece) in my early anime/manga phase, but now I can't stand them. I do go on and off watching. I might start watching for a year or two and then I stop watching for 6 months to a year.

As for recommendations, I'll go with I usually suggest. Code Geass is the best anime overall for me, it also has a very charismatic/likable main character so it's pretty easy to get into. Kara no Kyoukai is worth watching because of pretty animation and music alone. The story isn't for everyone though(my friends D:). And Mushi-shi is an awesome little gem that appeals to me on so many levels. It is completely straight faced and the atmoshpere it manages to create is amazing.

I still love anime. I'm not obsessed with the culture or anything. I just... genuinely like watching it. I think the animation is awesome, the stories are pretty good (the ones I watch anyway) and I just enjoy the scene. Everyone has the thing they like to watch -some people like watching reality TV. I personally don't. Yeah I can sit through it but I don't enjoy it.

It's all personal taste, I believe.

I still like it, though I'm a lot lazier in regards to watching it now with huge breaks inbetween episodes.

Being an anime fan is like being a fan of blue books. It's a subset of a medium, not a genre. Same goes with disliking anime/blue books.

I watched a lot of Yu-gi-oh, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball in my sprouting years. That is what got me started on anime.

From then on, i've watched plenty of others and read plenty of manga.

while i have gotten away from it, due to other shows/games, i am definitely getting right back into the mix of it with netflix and my other jrpg's ready to play, so i'd definitely say i still love it and hope to god it never dies out.

Well, I am an ex-Anime fan...in the sense that I no longer watch certain anime that appealed to me as a child.

I've more than made up for that by finding a lot of anime that appeal to me as an adult.

I'm an ex-ex anime fan. I watched Pokemon/DBZ/etc. but didn't know what anime was, so I don't think that counts. I never really thought of the stuff on Adult Swim as anime, either. In middle school, my friends dragged me to their anime club and I was first consciously aware of what anime was. They left only one good impression and about twelve bad impressions. Nevertheless, I became the "typical" anime fan. You know what I mean.

During high school, I hated anime and wanted to forget all about it until I saw someone's Haruhi Suzumiya avatar here a year ago. Guess what anime I started watching after that? From then on I considered myself a fan. Hell, I bought the Evangelion Platinum box set last week and am planning on pre-ordering Puella Magi Madoka Magica when Aniplex sets up shop.

A year or 2 ago I watched Death Note and then Code Geass, and I haven't gotten into anything anime related before then or since then.

However, another anime thread I looked at about an hour ago convinced me to watch the first episode of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, and I'm not sure if that was good, bad, or just insane.

Use to. Mind you I watched Black Butler a couple of days ago and thought it was good.

I used to love anime but now with my discovery of WWE and various tv shows (Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory) I barely watch it other than the new One Piece episodes and the Evangelion movies.

Passing interest only. I am not obsessed with the medium by any means. If I do watch a series, I usually go for the less flamboyant portrayals of the art style, and I usually stick with the series that don't play up the major aspects that annoy me.

One of Cowboy Bebop's greatest strengths is how it manages to downplay a lot of what I don't like in anime. J-pop music? Who needs it when you have jazz? Face-faults? Kept to a minimum. Magic, child heroes, chosen ones, padding, exposition, super series length, bad voice acting? Almost nonexistent.

Yes, yes I was

But after seeing what it does to people, I decided that, no, this was not something I wanted to be involved in.

Watched when I was younger, Dragon ball z, Yu-gi-oh, among others, just got out of the habit of watching it sometime between the age of 10 and now. Always thought about getting back into some, but never have.
