I got the THQ complete pack recently on steam (thank god for their sales) and started to realise the size of games generally. My Steam folder now is at 170 gb (basically Valve complete pack, THQ complete pack and some CoD games (not MW2) and the odd game here and there) which I thought was a little excessive. The fact that most new games now take up at least 10gb when a few years ago 3gb was considered to be a big game is getting a tad annoying. I know that half the responses will be "delete the games you aren't playing and stop complaining" but I'm interested on people's views. I know also that the size is keeping up with the times but I still think that it is increasing too quickly, console games have managed to stay under the 4gb mark (size of a DVD) for a long time.

I like my games big. I'm no techie, but I figure it indicates more stuff in the game.
I want an exceptional FPS that spans two disks of gameplay. I would gladly pay $50-$70 for a well-crafted and honed CoD, MoH, or Bad Company.

No, considering that computers and other technologies can hold more to match, it seems logical to cram as much in as possible.

Smaller file size = smaller game and less content. While this doesn't always mean a better game, I think the only way games are going to get more immersive is with more stuff - more detailed enviroments, better character AI, context sensitive music...which will all require more space.

First, size of a single layer DVD, 4.7 GB. Size of a dual layer DVD, 8.4 GB. Which is how big the average console game is now.

And after that, bigger=better (all other things being equal).

Storage space and download speeds should grow with it in time so it shouldn't be too bad.

Terabyte hard drives are becoming fairly cheap. SSD drives are also getting fairly big, though still expensive as all hell. There's more room now.

Considering big hard drives, it's really not an issue. Yes, games are big, but I'd rather have a big game in file size than a game with content/quality cut down for the sake of something as irrelevant as file size.

Yes.

Simple.

(The non simple answer is: I understand that video game designers want to make all the graphics shine like no other, and that most games are quite large and require a huge amount of space, but seriously. 10 years ago a huge game could take up anywhere from 500 megs to 2 gigs.

I honestly wouldn't mind if designers took graphics back a tad. My current processor can't take it anyway. Can barely play fallout 3 on the lowest settings.

Games are increasing in size but now a 750 gig HDD isn't hard to come by and buying 2-4 HDDs isn't that hard either.

Its all part of Moore's law.

Don't complain, storage space is cheap as dirt. Buy a new hard drive or six if you are running out of space.

size is better, yeah, I would love to have a 4gb game, but that would mean that the best we could get is god of war 2 out of it, give us 6gb we can get bioshock, give us 10-15gb we can have something as awesomely big as WoW... bigger is usually better for game worlds and immersion.

Bigger game means longer development time, which means bigger budget, which means more corporate BS so that the game won't fail, which means more design by committee crap, which leads to mediocrity.

Bigger -> the spread of mediocrity. Much of the modern games industry still doesn't understand this concept.

The bigger the better! They may be getting huge, but so is the amount of space you have for them, and a bigger game = more content.

Remember folks; size does matter! XD

I hate this mentality that because storage space is cheap it's fine to make games obnoxiously big. µTorrent is great because it's so small, and uses very little RAM and CPU cycles. It has just as many features as far more bloated programs. That should really be the philosiphy behind everything if possible. It's perfectly feasible for XBLA devs to make good, full featured games coming in at less than 1GB, and often less than 100MB - why is there a need for 10GB games? Most of the time you should be able to do without it.

As long as i got the space i don't care, but yes games are becoming more big so they can install them game so it dosn't take up much time on the loading screens.

Storage for me is not an issue, considering I've got a 1TB Harddrive and a backup 1TB External Harddrive. Downloading the games, on the other hand, is a real pain.

I too bought the THQ pack, and so far have not been able to download a single game lest I be struggling to maintain my internet quota for the rest of the month. So basically, I have a load of games to play, but will have to wait until my net's nearing it's uncap day to minimise impact to get 1, maybe 2 games per month.

Freaking internet quotas...

But to answer more directly: it doesn't bother me that much, as long as other technology is keeping up with it.

EDIT: Guy below me, I envy you so much right now...
