I ask this because about 10 minutes ago I was playing Atlantica online and was matched against a level 47 chainsaw main and then a level 40 axe main. As a level 28 gunner at the time I knew I had nearly no chance and yet managed to beat both of them, using tactics with my mercernaries.

So do you believe levels are everything or not.

Depends.
The only MMO I have really played is Guild Wars. On there, depending on your build (and skill), you can generally take things 5 - 10 levels higher than yourself. However it also depends on your armour, weapons and aforementioned build and skills.

Saying that, the level cap on Guild Wars is 20 and you do fight some enemies that are level 30, especially in Hard Mode. I think at the end of the day it is down to tactics (and having a good healer). But you won't stand a chance as a level 1 if you intend to take on a level 20 that's for sure.

Levels aren't everything.

Your build is everything. Don't matter how high a level you are if you've dumped points into useless skills.

Your gear also helps.

I think levels are only part of it. It also depends on other things, like your skills (which goes hand in hand with levels I suppose), and weapons and armor, and tactics is also another part.

Depends on the MMO, but level tends to be a big factor, until level cap.
I think level should play a reasonable part in a level-based MMOs, but in fights between players of similar levels, it should be possible for the fight to go either way, dependant on player skill (and to some extent, build).

Never played Atlantica, so know nothing about it.

People are the only thing that matter in an MMO. Without them, all MMO's will go the way of Auto Assault.

As for PvP, most games have a level +/- system were you begin to take heavy artificial penalties outside of a certain level bracket, so it depends vastly upon the MMO if skill and build can compensate for levels.

Levels should matter less in general - a game is more fun if it's not a dead cert that someone a level higher than you is going to kill you.

Before that, it'd be nice if classes were utterly removed from MMORPGs, which would take out a lot of the problems with what I like to call "Paladins". :)
