Yes, it's a JRPG. Don't let the fact that it doesn't subscribe to a turn-based combat system like the classic Final Fantasy games fool you. JRPG literally means a Japanese-made RPG. That's all. If people attribute other labels and aspects to the term, that's their problem.

To me, a strict RPG involves turn-based combat, so no. It's an Action RPG.

Definitely a J one, yeah, but more actiony than anything.

Convoluted story.. check
strange, otherworldy monsters.. check
large hair.. check
pubescent "chosen one".. check

Sounds like a JRPG to me, though, in all honesty, the only one that I would consider playing. I hate turn-based combat; so much so that even the pseudo turn-basedness of DA:O makes me hate that game, too...

Like been said multiple times, they are action-RPGs, made in Japan, by Japanese people.

So yes, they are Japanese RPGs, commonly abbreviated as JRPGs.

Stats and leveling system, extensive item system, and strategic combat...RPG.

Set characters and plot-focused characterization, expansive world, and strict-line but intricate story...JRPG.
