I only count the creatures from Zombie survival guide and World War Z as true zombies and they are undead.
(voodoo "zombies" are either hypnotized or undead but among these the undead ones are the closest to being zombies)

They aren't dead because their bodies function. Since they aren't dead, they are alive.
Their bodies don't really function. They have no circulation and their cells don't regenerate at all. They only have simple motor functions and some of their senses.

The way I see it, undead means that they died, and came back to life they way they were before. Zombies are more just a mindless animated corpse.

To pice this comment up, I'm going to do it as a Mr. Mackey impression!

"Mmmmmmkkkkkaaaaayyyyy, the word 'Zombie' does not directly corrolate to the undead, mmmmmkkkkkkaaayyyyy? It actually means to be thoughtless or lifeless, mmmmmmkkkkkaaayyyy? So what type of zombie it is is up for interpretation... MMMMKKKKKAAAYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?"

You added a "depends" option to your poll, and "depends" is my answer to 99% of the questions asked here, thus it has my vote. The zombies in say, 28 Days Later, are obviously alive, seeing as they can starve. Then again, they aren't really "zombies", but rather "infected humans". Average zombies (the ones in your average slasher movie) are probably undead.

Come to think of it, what do you folks think about defining "undead" as "alive even though should be medically dead"? The zombies in Pirates of the Caribbean come to mind here.

Judging by "The Zombie Survival Guide" (aka Zombie Bible). A zombie is a human who had an infection which kills you in about the 20th hour and reanimates you in 3 hours. So yes, zombos are undead.

Damn Zombie threads, what is your obsession with them? Can we use Goblins instead?

Depends. It can be...
...a reanimated body, for example via a curse or demonic infestation.
...some sort of virus, like in most recent zombie movies (which is usually in some sort of a limbo between alive and undead).
...a "hijacking" parasite, like headcrab zombies from Half-Life, in which case they're not dead at all.

yes, they are dead being raised to life.
So if anyone who dies then is brought back to life is a zombie. Then zombies exist!

A lot of people have died then have been brought back to life, for some reason or another.

Zombies (thumbs through the 1st-edition Monster Manual [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Manual#1st_Edition_Advanced_Dungeons_.26_Dragons]) are most assuredly undead. I've found, however, that the "Z" name has been attached to any sort of mindless people-munching semi/formerly -human creatures. As there are a variety of ways that the corpses can be reanimated, as long as they are, indeed, corpses the "zombie" tag should apply.

I really don't understand the meaning of the word "undead." Surely if you're not dead then you're alive?
heart stopped,organ shutdown.
and still strolling around then you,re undead.

not quite alive nor dead.
I suppose it's not actually possible for that to happen so it doesn't really need to make sense. Where does the word undead actually come from anyway?
'The Undead' was the original title for Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'.

Depends on the work. In some movies they're undead, and in some movies they're infected with a virus. That's all I can say on the issue.
