edit: I know I droned on for a bit...just read the first half of the review and the summary, and youll get the general idea. sorry, ill make the insurgency review far shorter.

First off, welcome to my new series of source mod reviews, which I have been planning for a while and finally decided to start.

So without further ado:

[HEADING=1] JESUS CHRIST ITS HUGE RED TEXT.

Also, Battlegrounds 2! [/HEADING]

From the ground up, battlgrounds 2 is a source mod based off the american revolution.

No power-armoed space marines here, but soft, fleshy, dimwitted brits and americans, shooting and more importantly STABBING each other.

After twenty minutes, we finally got a picture of the gun firing, and not the ridiculously huge amounts of smoke afterwards.

Before I go on with this review I must say this is the most fun you will have in a while, and it definitely has alot for those who like dicking around, and those who like, er, strict linebattles where you all line up 100 meters paralell to the enemy, and fire in volleys until miraculously your shitty muskets hit something. I enjoy both, apparently. I also have an interest in american history, so I...love this mod.

Now, on we go.

As with all source mods, you need a source game to play it. Thats...pretty much every valve game since 2004. I dont see why people always list them when you can say that. Also, if you dont know any of those games, PLEASE GET OUT OF THE ESCAPIST NOW, YOU CLEARLY ARE NOT A GAMER OR ANYONE OF IMPORTANCE ON THIS PLANET...OR MOST OTHER PLANETS FOR THAT MATTER.

Similiar to its Half life 1 predecessor, The Battlegrounds, Battlegrounds 2 is pretty much that except given a makeover and tossed into the source engine, also with new gameplay features, upgrades on old ones, and new maps.

Gameplay: Well, the default controls are inituitive and easy to use, the combat, is very thin on the surface, but takes time and practice to master the art of, er, firing an inaccurate and weak peice of wood at a guy before charging him and attempting to pull off the one-shot-bayonet stab to the head.

Most matches go like this: Areas to capture, often certain people needed to capture, short cap timer, blah blah, you know how this territory capture malarky goes. Then there are last-man-standing matches, which are just that. No respawns, just both teams charging across an open map, firing and advancing with bayonets. Laughs all round.

And of course, the historical nerd nazis have to come sometime, with linebattles. Yes, apparently historical re-enactments of those battles where both sides lined up and each team would take turns firing at once (In volleys) until the muskets actually managed to hit something, and then it always seems whenever one team has three men, and another has sixteen, the three will charge them with bayonets and do a helluva lotta damage. Considering they actually manage to run what is almost a kilometre without being shot. Which they likely will be.

Its a situational thing...

These linebattles can be quite enjoyable if you dont mind taking orders. The great bit is if you listen to the shouty voice of the leader you dont need much concentration at all to run in unison to the middle of the map, where you will find the enemy lining up also. Once your all lined up, the shooting begins and, well, you dont need any concentration at all. Good fun to do while chatting over vent or real life. The muskets cant hit shit, however...

Yes, the weapons and combat truly are a spectacle to behold. There is three classes, infantry, an unlimited number can be had of these, they get a musket, and, er, nothing else. But it has a bayonet attatched, so woopy doo. You cant hit shit unless your standing still - the crosshair is about 20 times wider while moving, and I have been playing BG2 for years and only once hit anything while moving. It has one bullet per 'clip' and needs to be reloaded after every shot (a long and annoying mechanic, but obviously necessary in a revolution game). You spawn with 37 bullets, which I have very rarely depleted.

Theres the commander, with his flintlock pistol, which is even less accurate than the rifle, but makes up for it in reloading speed. he also has a cutlass which is a bit tricky to use, but once mastered is a very pleasant part of the game.

and theres the frontiersman/jaeger (Depending on your team) they are both the same except in looks and name. Well, the melee weapon is argueable..
He has a musket also, except if he crouches and stays still its the most accurate thing youve got, obvious by the crosshair getting smaller. still not that accurate though.
Melee weapon..The frontiersman (american) has what appears to be a butterknife, and if there were game specific memes, this would be it. Everyone loves yelling "BUTTERKNIFE!" when they charge with it. Its fairly inaccurate, slow and weak...
The jaeger seems to just have a different model melee, but it has the same motions and speed. its modelled after a cutlass.

Visuals There have been better graphics from the source engine, but you honestly dont notice them while playing.

My detail is getting fine and boring now, so lets finish this up.

Summary :Its a good game for dicking around, playing absent mindendly, playing with some friends/a clan (Yeah...great clan game.) and getting all round frustrated. The novelty is good, the guns are clunky, slow and innacurate, but thats deliberate, and when your good its very satisfiying to see the white text telling you who you hit, where, and how much damage.
Fun game, enjoyed with some pals, mess around a bit, and yell at people. Battlegrounds 2.

I give it a generous 83% out of 100, and a reccomendation of: Get this mod now, and if you do have a source game you clearly arent a gamer either.
Definitely one of my favourite source mods.

Half life 2, HL2Episode1 and 2, Counter strike: Source
Team fortress 2, Left 4 dead, portal. day of defeat: source

Thats them,

As for music, yes, the startup screen has some fitting music, but ingame you are only greeted by gunfire, lots of teenagers yelling, the occasional squeaker, and sometimes crap music people play over their mic.
