Best post I have read this week. We can end this thread now.
VICTORY!

Necessary word count: For anyone who hasn't read the article in Game Informer, developers claimed in the article that they want to portray everyone properly. "I think there's an over-idealized notion of the founding fathers and the American side of the war in general. It's more nuanced. These were not super perfect divine beings. They were very human. A lot of them had rather fundamental flaws, and I think when we whitewash our history we do a disservice to everyone."-Corey May, a writer for the game

Hope is out there folks.

It actually is quite a predicament as far as its reputation is concerned. If it is anything close to a patriot fanwank, the fans will hate it; if it throws the British in a good light or the Revolutionaries in a bad one, I can already see "STEALTH MURDER SIMULATOR SLANDERS THE FOUNDING FATHERS" on the O'Reilly Factor. That said, I think they can handle it fine; for example, even if they tilted the British vs Americans in one way, they could easily tilt the Assassins vs the Templars in the opposite direction; assuming they feel the need to tilt it at all. The Assassins so far have managed to be pretty neutral in the conflicts no matter how wrapped up in them they are.

I think they'll go the safe route and make the redcoats be agents of the Templars, and the Yankees fighting for independence the Assassins.

Even if it's not completely historically accurate. It was a pretty morally ambiguous time for everyone

Lol well played :)

But in all seriousness so long as they provide like for the last couple games it should be good.
Careful or you might encourage me to make more smartass comments :)

Anyway yeah, they've been working on this one since 2 so that's a fair production time. If done right the setting change will allow for a good mix of new and old styles, with the new obviously being the frontier. I really want good environment interaction with the trees and landscape. I've heard they're making the combat all about staying mobile now too, which if fighting people with guns makes sense. You can't counter a bullet.

Idea: How awesome would it be to grab a guy, spin around so he's between you and the other guy with a gun, the other guy shoots the guy you grabbed, then you leap on him while he tries reloading.
I'm really hoping for fluid free running in the forest and a slight reworking of the horse controls (I didn't really like them in the previous AC games they felt off). As for the muskets I think they jumping people once they're reloading will be a a huge possibility. Shit you can probably take a trip to the store, make tea and drink, and still have time to stab the guy while he's reloading.

Personally, I think people will be more pissed off when they hear how they manage to link Desmond into it when we just want him to end.

Isn't he killing redcoats in the trailer? Id think it would be safe to assume they're the templars right?

Though I'm thinking the main character may be Native American, and if that's the case there's room for templars on either side.

Also washington with the piece of eden might be cool, considering theres that probably false but popular mythology around him like that story where he came out of a firefight unharmed even though his jacket was riddled with bullet holes.

In either case I'm psyched. Though I'm concerned for how they're going to work with the game mechanics to make it match the time period and still feel like AC

All indications from the previews, much less series tradition, seems to be that this will be playing with two themes here. First, all those historical figures we've been deifying/vilifying based on our home nations for the past three hundred years are going to be made humans again. More importantly, humans with weaknesses (self-doubt, overambitious, etc) rather than straight heroes and demons.

Second point: Dev team has noted that this story is not so much about British vs. Americans as it is about Assassins vs. Templars, and even then they're doing what they can to show these guys as more than typical big bads. The Templars honestly believe they're saving the world, their methods just happen to be virtual enslavement of the majority of humans.

In context, nothing to get angry about, and in fact something to be encouraged to get us to stop thinking about the Revolutionary War as America's first chance to prove to the rest of the world how much they should refrain from fucking with us in the future.

Out of context, I'm sure things could be misinterpreted as a "violent, socialist-written indoctrination tool". No amount of disclaimers on the boot screen can dissuade someone who's never played the damn thing. But if works like Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter and whoever keeps adding zombies to old English literature are allowed to exist and profit in this day and age, I think there's room enough for "George Washington is not the Kwisatz Haderach of colonial America, deal with it."

If I take what happened to star wars and mass effect or any bioware game in general. No matter what the devs will do they will draw the butthurt feeling

Interesting theory, I think the answer is possibly, but I think this question supposes that the outlets who create a social panic pick their targets entirely rationally. Look at Fox News, they have no idea about the reality of sexualised females in video games, but they think Mass Effect is a sex simulator. If Ubisoft do venture into that potentially controversial territory with this next entry though, I'll have a good deal of respect for them.

Even in the games George Washington was a templar. I dunno how that will work since the main character is supposed to have a close friendship with him, but it shows that they won't be black an white.

I'm gonna use a bit of a Metaphor.

Imagine AC3 were a stripper, and Fox News were a client after a long day and a sexless marriage.
Fox News is gonna try to get all into AC3, until Ubisoft, the strip clubs manager, "escorts" the client off the premises.

Anyways, it's just Fox News. It's not like anybody watches that channel for the news.

There will always be butthurt. Always. With any AAA game nowadays, there is always fantastic amounts of butthurt on display. Gaming culture containing the massive amount of inane whiners it has...

Anyway, more specifically, yes, I think FOX will throw a temper-tantrum at this. If they can do it at the mother-fecking muppet movie, they can do it at this.

I've always thought that the AC game type won't work when guns get involved. When you've got a bunch of people running around with rifles, running up and stabbing them in the throat doesn't always work so well...

Anyways to the question.

I sure as hell hope not. It's a game that says WORK OF FICTION right on the loading screen.

"Tonight on Fox News: Assassin's Creed III takes place in American Revolution... SHOWS GEORGE WASHINGTON!? DISGRACEFUL!"

But seriously, I hope there's no butthurt. From all the details I've read about it, looks like it's going to be the most amazing of the series, with dynamic Seasons that change your animations, like with snow you trudge more, that sort of thing, and that the landscape is 5x larger than Rome was, with tons of wilderness and mountains to explore.

Gonna be a great conclusion to Desmond's story. I'm glad that the AC2 team has been working on it since AC2 was released. It's about time this story concludes, getting tired of the cliffhangers.

PS: I chose "WHO WAS PHONE!?" Maybe I'll finally get the answer I deserve.

Yeah that's not going to happen. The British just don't get butthurt in the same way American's do. Partly because the British are portrayed as the bad guys all the time anyway, and partly because we're a culture who revels in taking the piss out of ourselves. If anyone in Britain cries foul of it they'll be part of a very small minority.

Nah you're thinking of Fox News. Now if this were set in the Civil War THEN there'd be room for some southern butthurt, or northern butthurt if they went the route of actually telling everyone the Union was not the paragons fighting for slaves everywhere like they would have us believe, and the South was not the evil overlords fighting to keep the right to abuse people. Yeah, some folks in the north might be a little upset at that. Especially if Sherman is brought up.

OT: After reading that GI article I think this is going to go more towards "Assassin's saved America" than "America rulez!" If a single bit of what the devs are saying is true, the rage people seem to have about pandering to Americans is looking shaky.

It could hail Washington as the fucking messiah and FOX would ***** that it's anti-American.

Mr. O'Riley has yet to understand that he needs to pull the US flag OUT of "there", not push it in farther, because pushing it in will only increase the pain.

Honestly, I just hope the writers don't suck up to the US. What Native American tribe is Connor part of? (I heard he was one of the ones that allied with the English)
He's part of the Mohawk, but apparently when he was young his village was destroyed, except instead of going revenge route like Ezio did when his family died it made Connor want to fight injustice and become a freedom fighter, which is apparently how he comes by the Assassins.

I'm English, I know what British people are like, and yeah, a lot of people won't care, we are used to it, but at the same time you have the sort of crowd who read The Sun as their bible and get completely up in arms about everything.
