What do you think is the best?

I've only see the movie, which is awesome and I'm also currently reading the book (I'm up to the Light house scene). I've never read the manga but really want to, is it any good?

I prefer the novel to the movie because of its character development and disturbing back stories (Mitsuko I'm looking at you) also that its the only book I've read that makes want some of the characters to be killed (Misktou I'm looking at you again, you *****!!!), but I think the movie did a great job and it's one of those movies you have to show your friends.

Manga, the right mix for me of writing, visual satisfaction; and suspension of disbelief. Psycho man (forgot name) is SO much more developed in novel/ manga.

What are you talking about? You didn't list what book you're mentioning. You said "light house scene" and Mitsuko so I think you're talking about Uzumaki but I'm not sure.

i can't choose

i love manga for the viewable action with an instant pause on the cool stuff(cuz it's a picture)

i love books for the more developed story (they need to tell you everything, there not showing stuff)

movie's are great when just sitting back and let the movie do the work.

no pages to be turned.

What book do you think I'm reading ? I meant Mitsuko's back story is disturbing seeing how she was raped at the age of nine but she's still a *****.

Only ever read the first couple volumes of the manga (which was awesome), but since Stephen King thought that the novel was bitchin', I'd be willing to wager that it ain't half bad.

I never heard anything about a movie.

Novel > Manga > Movie

Unless of course you have no imagination and need things drawn out for you.

You know, when you name a vs. thread "Battle Royale," apparently referring to a particular story, you create one heck of a double meaning...

Having read the novel and watched the movie, I think they both have their strengths, but I'm going with the movie.

There are some thing that the novel makes more interesting, like expanding on the different cliques and relationships and backstories. However, those all serve as interesting information, but the movie still served very strongly with what it did present us. In fact, what I really enjoyed about the movie was the mystique of the characters from NOT knowing everything about them. I didn't need to know about Mitsuko's childhood abuse. I thought that her character was stronger when we didn't know anything about her except that she was allowing herself to play the game fully, and when her character wraps, her voice comes up with text on the screen, simply stating "I just didn't want to be a loser anymore."

Also, the movie had a style that the novel didn't have, or at least one that was far more effective in movie form. I thought it was absolutely fantastic to see the movie update us with statistic commentary regarding who died and how many are left, etc.

The novel explained a lot more, which is interesting without doubt, but I found the movie was stronger for cutting through everything and getting right down to the nub of the story.

I want to read the manga, though. I hear good things.

Though it is common to find this formula to be true, it is not set in stone. The film versions of A Clockwork Orange and The Godfather are two examples of movies which were elevated through their film forms. I read both books, and they were ok. A good read, to be sure. But the movies were spectacular for the way everything came together, from the way they were shot to the performances to the musical score.

Yes, sometimes movies simply just bring a story to the screen, and in those cases you'll pretty much always find that the book is far better, but sometimes a movie can be made that makes use of the fact that film is a DIFFERENT ART FORM from books and brings something to the table that the books could not.

I haven't read the book, but I have seen the film and manga, and preferred the manga. I think for me the ultra-violence is a big part of the plot, and being able to see that without having to rely on imagination or without censorship really brings the story home for me.

Also, I love the translation in the manga, wonderfully creepy, and including the immortal phrase 'fuckaduck!'
