This isn't the first poll I've done - last time I asked what the best Halo game was, got a variety of responses, and found myself happy to see that Combat Evolved came out on top, and that I'm not alone in my dislike for Halo 4. So, with talk about the Warcraft games being remastered/re-released (or not), and StarCraft II now focused on multiplayer, thought it would be fun to look at the third part of my RTS trifecta.

So, CnC. Weirdly enough, I've played every game on this list, but only ever actually finished the GDI campaign of Tiberium Wars and the entirety of Generals. Yes, these games are hard (or in the case of Tiberian Twilight, not worth the time). Still, I've enjoyed them. If anything, the early games have held up far better than Warcraft I & 2. Now, the chances of the series being revived anytime soon are practically nil, and if it was, I'd almost certainly need to upgrade my PC to play them (part of why I haven't been able to play Grey Goo or Deserts of Kharak), but, well, one can dream.

So, best CnC game? And by best I'm including expansions by default, and due to limits of the poll, not including options like Tiberium Alliances or Renegade. But hey, feel free to vote regardless. Similar to the Halo poll, I won't detail my thoughts on every game, but I'll rank them as thus:

8) Tiberian Twilight
7) Tiberian Sun (though I've actually barely played this game, so this ranking is more arbitrary than anything else)
6) Red Alert
5) Tiberian Dawn
4) Generals
3) Red Alert 2
2) Red Alert 3
1) Tiberium Wars

I will choose the oldest one that has aged the best and is 100% playable due to there being actual thought and testing put into the level designs and game mechanics: Red Alert 1.

Red Alert 2 for me, played it all the time as a kid. My list, out of the ones I've played, would be something like:

1. Red Alert 2
2. Red Alert 3
3. Tiberium Wars/Khans Wrath
4. Generals
5. Renegade
6. Tiberian Twiligt

This thread reminded me that I should get into RTS again, it was probably my most played genre on PC back in the days.

In no particular order:

Red Alert 2
Renegade
Red Alert
Generals

Now, the real question is if anyone will be brave enough to name Sole Survivor as their favorite.

Not a favorite, no... but I did play quite a bit of it back in the day. Usually as the Humvee, because as a kid I absolutely loved Humvees.

Anyway...
It was a tough choice for me between Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun, and Red Alert 2. Of the three, I definitely played more RA2 than the others since I played it competitively for a while... but it's the early 'Tiberian' games that I think of first when I hear Command & Conquer. If I had to choose, Tiberian Sun is probably my favorite. I liked the gameplay, I liked the story, I liked the cheesy FMVs with Michael Biehn and James Earl Jones, and I loved the hell out of its Terminator knock-off expansion pack.

Honorable mention to Generals, though. I'd probably look back more fondly on it if it weren't called Command & Conquer, 'cause it's an amazing game in its own right... it's just not a good C&C game.

I only played up til Tiberium Wars (I would had played if my stupid dad didn't thrown out the disc cos I was saving it until I upgrade my pc...) when I bought the Decade edition. Ok granted I wasn't able to played Red Alert 2 in the disc for some bizzare reason (some kind of weird patch error which the only way I was able to fixed it was to copy someone game file and past it over).

Out of those games, I'm bias to say Red Alert and Generals!

Well ok Red Alert was the very first C&C game I played before getting the decade edition but it still still a hella fun game playing it again! General was also a fun tongue in cheek game aswell (oh boy the GLA faction would never existed if it was made recently!).

Here's the list of C&C games I've played in the order that I enjoyed them;

1. Red Alert 2
2. Tiberian Dawn
3. Renegade
4. Red Alert 1
5. Tiberian Sun
6. Tiberium Wars
7. Generals (hardly even resembles a "proper" C&C game)

Red Alert 2 (and Yuri's Revenge to a lesser extent) hit just the right balance between real world sensibilities and goofy sci-fi camp. I'm a sucker for paranoid yarns about the Cold War going hot and the USSR instigating a full military invasion. Unit pathing had improved substantially over previous titles as well. I hardly ever had to coax stubborn units to choose the shortest path from A to B or cross a bridge like in earlier games.

Also, it had the best briefing officers. What can I say, I like women in uniform (PROPER uniforms I might add, not the pinup-esque outfits of their RA3 counterparts).

For me it's a toss up between Generals and RA2. I certainly have good memories of playing Generals at LAN parties though.

Quick Top 3?

Tiberian Sun:
It's just a great game, even the expansion is pretty solid.

Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge:
RA2 was pretty good, but YR brings it to a whole other level.

Renegade:
I love this game, it's a pretty good FPS and the multi-player, back in the day...was insanely fun.
I'm STILL e-friends with folks I met online.

I have to say Red Alert 2. It was really fun. Then I'd have to say Red Alert, I really enjoyed that game. And then... I'd have to say I didn't like anything else Westwood ever made at all. I almost didn't get Red Alert, I wasn't a big fan of C&C. But the (I can't remember if it was a trailer or a demo) got me. Good music, good story... it worked.

Red Alert 1 & 2. If only all I played was random Skirmish. I enjoyed the map editor of the first Red Alert and made many custom maps with properly laid out coastlines so I could actually use naval units.

Tiberium Sun. C'mon it had Michael Bihen and James Earl Jones.

Next would have to be Tiberium Wars, then Red Alert 2.

Tiberius Sun. Had a great cast and really liked the TDI mechanics.

As a shooter fan Renegade is probably second. Hasn't aged too well though. Fortunately a fan remake/successor is great fun to play and has bot support!

I'd go with Red Alert #1. The original C&C had a lot of questionable design, as one might expect of an inital entry. Tiberian Sun seemeed to play a lot with interesting, but not exactly well done or great mechanics.

Red Alert 2 & 3, Tiberium Wars, and Generals all seemed like they were chasing ideas from other games too much. TW particularly since the Scrin were almost copy-pasted Protoss.

Renegade's kind of an outlier. Interesting, and possibly an obscurely influential title (since we see similar mechanics popping up in myriad games since). Not a whole lot of great design or balance in its formula though.

Red Alert 2, and then I'm not sure which one comes next for me. I just about prefer every little quality about it, including I like the characters and the comedic side to it, especially Yuri, who I remember the most out the entire series.

But the soviet chick in Red Alert 3 is Gina Carano, someone who legitimately kicks ass and one of the sexiest women in MMA. Second would be that soviet chick from Red Alert 2.

As for the games I was torn between Red Alert 2 and Tiberium Wars. I didn't go for Tiberian Sun because apparently I suck too much to finish the campaign and I'm a sucker for mammoth tanks. I think ultimately I went with Tiberium Wars because not only did it have three solid factions each with their own unique super unit. Also the whole "conquer the world" mode in the expansion that was pretty awesome.
