Poll: Bone Spear or Bone Spirit

Oh yes, it's that time again. Those playing RPG's back in the day will probably have argued this to death but I've recently dipped back in and find myself wondering:

In Diablo 2, playing as the Necromancer, is Bone Spear or Bone Spirit better.

Bone Spirit homes in on targets and does twice the damage of Bone Spear but costs twice the mana.
Bone Spear goes through multiple enemies but goes straight and does half the damage.

I think if that's the only difference then they're the same. If one does twice the damage for half the mana then casting that once is the same as casting the other twice.

Bone Spear. Saves you mana on weaker foes. You'll just have to click more.

Wait, no. One homes, the other goes straight but through multiple enemies.

I will guide with my knowledge of the D2 necromancer.And I say that you take bone spear.Or else ye shall perish.

Use bone spear. Not only does it cost less damage but it does pierce all enemies in a straight line. Long halls and such will yield a much higher damage than the single target spirit. If you are building a pure bone necro as I assume you are if you are asking this question. You want to look at also maxing, in addition to spear, teeth and all the other bonus spells. By bonus spells I mean the ones that when points are put in boost the damage of bone spear.

I'd say go with the one that pierces. My experience with D2 has been that the enemy density and the width of the halls you fight in generally means you'll have a bunch of enemies all lined up anyway.

My knowledge of the subject is lacking, but how can you not pick bone spear automatically out of any list?
