Poll: Chicken vs. Turkey: The deli dilemma

So, chicken has pretty much reigned supreme in the United States as the fowl of choice, with one exception: deli meats.

What I mean when I say deli meat is a roasted, preferably unprocessed, thin-sliced meat that is generally served cold ("cold cuts") on a sandwich (henceforth referred to as "sammich").

Up to this point, I had typically only encountered turkey as a deli meat. I assumed that chicken's lack of presence in this field was because in this one capacity, turkey was superior to its nemesis. Yesterday, however, I encountered a deli which was serving a lemon pepper chicken deli meat. Curious, my girl and I tried it, and minds were blown, and bricks were shat.

So, now that I have to reevaluate my entire perspective on the bird breast cold cut sammich showdown, I put the question forth to the escapist: When it comes to deli meats, which do you prefer? Turkey, or chicken?

Well, when I do eat deli meat, I generally stick with turkey, though cold chicken can be good. That said, I generally prefer not to eat deli meats in the first place. They're some of the most unhealthy meats around because of the massive amounts of preservatives in them. Generally, I just get my protien from various nuts and the occassional can of sardines on saltine crackers. Much healthier options.

Neither. Give me some roast beef or pastrami or something else nice and meaty like that. Turkey and chicken have plenty of good uses, but I find them a bit underwhelming in sandwiches, generally.

I wasn't attempting to suggest that turkey and chicken are the only acceptable sammiches. I actually prefer italian cold cuts, like pastrami or salami. But occassionally it's nice to have something a bit lighter. This was more a question of differentiation between the fowl.

Deli chicken has always tasted weird to me for some reason. So turkey from a deli, chicken in pretty much every other situation.

Turkey reigns supreme as the ultimate deli meat for me. I'm not a huge fan of cold chicken. But I'd prefer to have roastbeef. Yum Yum Yum.

This was my attitude until the afforementioned mind-blowing incident, but I support your position. If someone offers you a freshly-sliced lemon pepper chicken deli meat, though. Take my advice: Accept.

I just figured I might as well say why I voted for neither one, since it was an option in the poll. Heh.

Also, fun fact: While the word "salami" and the Genoa salami commonly found in sandwiches are Italian in origin (although lots of similar stuff exists in other countries all over Europe), pastrami, both the word and the food itself, originates with Romanian Jews.
