I think it would be a pretty awesome idea if Nintendo would release Authoring Tools for its Legend of Zelda franchise (using the Twilight Princess graphics and game engine). Both for PC and the consoles, allowing you to create, direct, and perhaps even narrate your own Legend of Zelda dungeons, story-lines, and whatnot. Then put them out into the public for playthroughs. Sure, there would probably be like...thousands of Forest, Water, and etcetera Temples remade with the Twilight Princess graphics, but still, I'd enjoy playing through it, or perhaps even making my own dungeon for people to navigate through.

No. I do not want to see a good thing ruined by mountains of rubbish. I do not want something to be steeped in even greater levels of fanpersonism. Besides, there are other ways to do this (Garry's Mod).

There's also the hurdle of actually distributing said content.

No odds of it happening. Plus, Im not sure if I would like to wade through constant crossovers (supported by their own erotic fanfiction to finish it, of course) of some kind of bullshit fan story.

BUT.
I do think there is the potential for some fans out there to make something really good if given the tools to do so. But I think it would take some time to get to the good things...

It's a great idea, but Nintendo doesn't seem all that friendly towards the concept of fan works. Anybody remember that Star Fox project that got shut down a few months back? It was shaping up to be everything a Star Fox fan could want, yet Nintendo went in and shut it down anyway because even if the fans were clamoring for it and it was set to be distributed free of charge, at the end of the day, it was still copyright infringement.

If Nintendo takes that hard of a stance towards fanmade engines, what makes you think they'd open themselves up to more potential "profit loss" by releasing their own engines to the public?

Not sure how practical it would be (if the engine isn't easy to work with it will fall flat on its ass) but I like the thought of it if it does work.

It'd encounter the same problems that all level generators encounter at one point or another: Dungeons shaped like enormous phalluses.

No thanks.

Not gonna happen. It would take tons of time for them to create such a game. You're essentially asking for them to make a game that allows you to easily make your own games.

I don't think having the tools will be enough. What we'd basically be in for is 1001 watered down crappy Zelda dungeons for every 1 inspired and interesting one.

This would never happen, but if it did we would probably only get 1 or 2 good user created games out of it and about a billion weird fanfictiony ones where dark link is the main villain.
