I am planning on cosplaying in the near future, having observed friends doing it on a recent trip to Canada and it looked like fun.
One thing that appeals to me about cosplaying is that my female friends dressed up as Assasin Creed characters and no one made a big deal (they won the contest in the end).
I like the idea of female entrants not expected to be female characters and male entrants not always being male characters. You can dress as whoever the hell you want and you're all judged on equal footing. No one is confined by gender.
