Wait...hang on...it's coming...Ah, yes:

What about Gears of War?
BAM!

Yeah I guess, but if it was a story driven game I'd expect it to be a surprise twist or something, not sure I'll be motivated to go save a gay dude from a castle in an RPG esque game.

Thank you, Drow, thank you very much. That was just the answer I was looking for.
He's the first one I always think of.

(Now you're mocking me?! ...fine. Even if it's just his corpse...I'm taking him back!)

Who cares? If its a good game I would play regardless. If its a bad one I would skip it Regardless of who the main character wanted to poke/was poked by.

A lot of people seem to forget that 'gay' is a sexual preference, not an entire personality.
Which, by the way, is really fucking annoying.
I've known enough gay people to know that it can be both.

I guess it really wouldn't bother me. Identifying with the main character really has nothing to do with whether or not he's a gay male, it has to do with how he reacts to his environment and the situations he's placed in. And it's not like empathizing with said character is the only immersion point in games anyway; a game's environments are a hard sell for me.

Here's something I've noticed: why are people getting so very defensive about this?

sure if its fun, but if it's a story driven game probably not because with those you need to feel at least some kind of connection with the main character or plot for it to have the intended effect and i don't generally connect with penis.

It's a serious question.
I don't know that's why i am asking.
Perhaps I just don't get why folks get hung up on whether someone is gay? Its a part of life and hell, it exists in nature, and if video games are still considered artistic, art does mirror reality. Its going to happen, in a non-choice oriented game, and I'm sure it'll be protested. I don't think it'd make a difference either way, to me anyways. I play games to immerse myself in the artwork/soundtrack/gameplay, and as long as any of those factors doesn't directly include severe homoeroticism, I won't be bothered.

To anyone doing the "What about (character)?" joke;
Your comment is predictable, useless, and unfunny. Please, please, spend just a little more thought in a joke before posting.

Anyway, this question is pretty old. I don't think most people will have a problem. Protagonists in games, or anything for that matter, are usually straight, white/asian and male, because that's the target demographic. It would be relateable to more people, since the majority of the crowd will fall into at least one of those categories.
But, there are non-white and female heroes, too. What's different is that games are usually targeted at boys and young men. Y'know, those impressionable youngsters, who curdles the blood of his parents when he is exposed to things, like, the real world. Those kids that generously throw around the term "fag" and are often put off by a character who seems just a bit too effeminate. It would be a hard sell.

I can't really think of any games with gay protagonists, that aren't parodies. I wonder if Rockstar is planning to do a reversal with Gay Tony. But then again, it's Rockstar, so the main character might just be a construction worker who likes to talk about the YMCA, if not just outright divert it from gayness.

I'm going to bask in inordinate pride that, in my case, I was totally serious.

If the game was good, it really shouldn't matter. Unless the main character is like, slurring his speech and wearing pink sparkly dresses with lipstick.

Heh, when my bro and I played Dynasty Warriors 4, I played as Zhang He exclusively, wearing the costume with the butterfly wings. I'd prance around the map farting butterflies and pissing my brother off.

Of course, Zhang He was not only the gayest character in the game, he was also the fastest, which is the feature I always prefer in my character. For me, it was more about that than just the joke. If Zhang He was slow, I wouldn't have played him no matter how funny I thought his outfit was.

So for me, it's not about details such as sexuality, it's more about game play.

(I'm a girl, btw. For those who don't know.)

Yes, why not? I don't mind homosexuals. And if they're lesbians, I'm fairly sure the game would be a hit :p

Play a game with a openly gay superhero kinda like Mario.
And just like Mario, The hero would have to save his life partner
I hate to ask but how is Mario kinda gay?

I would have no problem with it as long as it was not the entire focus of the story like some love stories are.

What difference would it make? Do we honestly think that being Peach is a woman makes any difference to the story in Mario?
