If money isn't an issue go for both. If it is i'd go with a good desktop. I've always preferred my desktop compared to my laptop.

Laptop
A) It's cheaper
B) I can be anywhere in the house as long as there is an outlet nearby and conveniently practically all the furniture is next to one.
C) It's the best computer in the house
D) Our last desktop got killed during a lightning storm, so if there is a storm coming through I can just run on battery power with settings set to low.

I'm using my laptop right now. It's mostly stationary though, since it's roughly the size and weight of a small attaché case belonging to a travelling lead weight salesman. It's not old, we have a very old laptop as well that's more the size and weight of a slab of depleted uranium, but my laptop's just heavy. I dunno why.

My dream, though, is Other; building (or rather, having someone build, as I know bugger all about building computers :p) a supercomputer from cheap old parts, linking them all together into one system. I just checked Intel.com, and 2.2GHz CPUs are selling for around $64, so I'm guessing older processors will be a lot cheaper, and by the time I actually have the ability to make this dream come true I can probably get 4GHz CPUs for $5 apiece or something. Buy 20. Link into four virtual cores. Voilà, 20GHz quad core CPU for $100. I know it's probably a lot more complicated than that, but hey, a man can dream right? :)

I have a mixture...
I technically use a laptop, but I use it as a Desktop, in that I have an external monitor, a keyboard and a mouse, and the closed notebook is just a very expensive mousepad.
I don't use my notebook because its screen has a technical problem, and fixing it would cost as much as an external monitor. :D

I have a desktop as I like to build them myself and I hate laptop keyboards with a fiary passion. I've been tempted to get myself a cheap laptop though to watch films and other DVDs on to save power.

Laptops can be more convenient at the best of times, but their chargers are useless. They break easily and are expensive to replace. Also they aren't amazing for gaming either.
I'm going with Desktop as theyre less likley to drive me insane.

Desktop.

Laptops have a nice ideal for being able to go around the house, but I'd rather a desktop for the same reason I'd rather a 42" HDTV over a portable CRT jobbie.

I'm on my latop, I haven't got a desktop... useful thing about laptops is that their portable. Case in point? Right now I'm writing this from a hotel room in Kyoto. And I live in England :p

Desktop for everyday use, laptop for older (pre-2005) games on vacations, Nintendo DS for everything else. That is, fun games I can launch in 5 minutes and play while waiting for the bus.

I really have to get 2GB memory to my laptop, it sucks with 512MB...

I voted for other because there is no "Both" option. They have their advantages and disadvantages.
