I love them and they have been the most consistent part of the series to this day. Even in a title like Skyward Sword, which I have a lot of problems with, I still find the dungeons excellently designed. I feel as if they are the core of the series and without them the sidequests, overworld exploration and more cinematic moments (all of which are the functional "quiet time" of the series) would not have the impact it does. I also love how dungeons in the game actually feel like some crazy trap filled labyrinth or ancient resting ground instead of an enemy filled hole in a wall. It really enhances the adventurous atmosphere of the game and without them I feel like the series would lose part of it's identity.

I just like going into places filled with adventure and puzzles... So, in terms of LoZ, I like the dungeons because they're usually a place filled with adventure and puzzles... Then again, I do have a biased dislike of any dungeon involving water for some reason... *twitches*

Well, yea- no, no not really... Dungeons are my least favorite part of a Zelda game. It just brings everything to a grinding halt. I'd much rather have them be hidden as part of the landscape like the first Zelda. I never finished the first game, hell I probably never made it past the halfway point, but it was just so satisfying to stumble upon a dungeon all on your own without someone giving me an objective of why I should go there.

But I've heard they're going for a complete open world in the next one, and I really hope Nintendo's not lying about it!

Generally, yes. Some can be a little too easy but usually they're creative enough to enjoy each new one. My favourite is the one where you have to use mirrors and light in Windwaker.

They are my favourite element of a Zelda game. Even the tough ones are good to me in the satisfying challenge sort of way, and the only one I'd say I truly dread playing through is Jabu-Jabu's Belly in Oracle of Ages. They tend to be far more condensed than any of the overworlds, sometimes with every room offering some kind of new obstacle or theme.

The idea of a pure overworld sounds intriguing, but I was also intrigued when someone proposed a 'dungeon world' where all the dungeons are connected by passages and some people are living down there. Out of necessity, such would be a darker-themed game than most of the series, particularly if few can remember what Hyrule looked like before.

uh, yeah; the dungeons are one of the key selling points of the game. The fact of the matter is that freedom in a game is means nothing without limits. It's why games that offer "total" freedom are a mess with wonky pacing and difficulty curves that go nowhere. Plus considering how intricately designed the dungeons are with puzzles that really make you think and react, I am baffled as to why anyone wouldn't like them. Asking to get rid of the dungeons in Zelda is like asking the get rid of mushrooms in Mario.

No.

I grew up loving dungeons in Zelda. Particularly the ones in 2D.

As I've grown older I've also grown more impatient with the puzzle solving required to complete Zelda dungeons. I no longer have the patience to get stuck, back track for 45 minutes checking everything until I finally notice the seemingly obvious thing I missed. That's assuming I find it the same day. Often times I'd have to take a break and start fresh until I find it or check online.

These days I just want the experience. If I get stuck in a dungeon I might give it all of 5 minutes then refer to an online guide. The challenge associated with the Zelda dungeons actively take me out of the story and the fun. That said, the entire dungeon isn't all that bad. I tend to enjoy them when they give me the dungeon item. I also have fun figuring out dungeon bosses.

Figuring out the overworld puzzles are typically more fun for me. They are often more of a metroidvania style experience where you simply need to unlock a certain item to traverse. Some of the trickier ones are optional and you can simply move one without any worries.
